SEGA is releasing another mini system, in the form of a 36-game tiny arcade machine

SEGA has been on quite the miniature kick lately, releasing their Genesis Mini system last year, and following upon that idea with the reveal of the Game Gear Micro, announced earlier this year. They're not done yet, though, as they have plans to bring back nostalgic memories of old-school arcades. Called the Astro City Mini, this latest project was first revealed in a news article on Game Watch Japan, and was swiftly deleted, presumably having accidentally been posted a bit too early, though not before pictures were backed up from the article. The Astro City Mini is a mini tabletop-sized arcade cabinet, with six buttons, a joystick, and a small screen. 36 games will be available on the system, with ten of them revealed thus far, including the likes of Virtua Fighter, Golden Axe, and Altered Beast. Also included are the following:

  • Alien Syndrome
  • Alien Storm
  • Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder
  • Columns II
  • Dark Edge
  • Puzzle & Action: TantR
  • Fantasy Zone

SEGA will be releasing the Astro City Mini later this year in Japan, where it will retail for 12,800 yen (~$120). The mini cabinet will also feature a headphone jack, two USB ports, a micro USB input for power, and an HDMI out, used for playing the games on a TV or monitor.

benheckhacks will enjoy this. so will i lol. probably wont get it, but eh it would be cool to have.

personally, i really dislike the arcade-stand-looking-like handheld devices. they seem a little... chunky. mind you, those arcade games were played on chunky devices, but we have the ability to have traces on circuit boards 2-4 nanometres(i think that's what they are called lol) apart! like wtf! i could imagine, tearing this apart and making it more... pocketable. not that this isn't pocketable... it's just... well it would make me look like i have a really fucked up penis lol.

I made my own MAME bar top for everyday arcade emulation a few years ago. Excuse the messy garage.

You don't happen to have a project page or details about the build, do you?
I'm interested in the measurements, because I want to make one, but I think two joysticks make the thing a wee bit unconfortable for two players.

I really hate to be "that guy" but this isn't needed we have so many emulators that can do this rather than pay for a emulator in a different shell casing. I guess this is good for a collector item I guess it's kinda the same thing for like a PS1 Mini and all those other classic consoles. Maybe a PS2 or a PS3 mini or 360 mini would be more appropriate because those don't have perfect emulation on PC but from Acadae games and retro gaming from the 90's almost all can be emulated flawlessly on almost all basic computers and even android phones.

you're on gbatemp, we're all 'that guy'
ALSO YES, A PS2 CLASSIC WOULD BE AMAZING
then i can bust it wide open like the ps1 classic and finally experience ps2 games
plus there's a hella lot more people who are more nostalgic for the ps2 than the ps1
(sorry ps1 fans)

Sorry, I think it was longer ago than I remembered as I can't find any trace of the build notes. Unfortunately, the arcade forum (jammaplus) I posted it on shut down a few years back too.

We need an n64 mini now
I really can't think of a more pointless 'mini system' than an N64.
• any games that were system exclusives and are still worth playing (and that Nintendo can legitimately rerelease) have been made available multiple times via rereleases and virtual console.
• the system is massively over rated and doesn't have anywhere near the same nostalgia value that Nintendo's earlier systems had.

Seems a bit pointless with how many times they've already released these games in various collections throughout the years.
There's a ton of Sega's arcade properties that have either never been released outside of the arcades or had such watered down ports to home systems that this could easily be worth owning. And as others have said, at least a couple of titles in that list never left the arcades.

IDK, I just don't see the appeal of devices in this form factor. The Genesis Mini was neat because you could connect it to a TV and it was essentially a smaller Genesis. Not this weird, mini-arcade thing that looks like it was only meant for kids, and can't be played with two players from the looks of things.

Here is a mame cabinet there are also numerous other versions.

Jesus, what are the other buttons for outside of the usual six buttons for each player!?

Glad to see Golden Axe 2 on there, but I don't recall Sega arcade boxes ever looking like this. Needs a redesign.
Sega's Astro city arcade machines actually do look like their new mini version. Here is a picture of the actual arcade machine.

now we need xbox mini
6th gen games are too complex for a mini system, like, even if you can make a system that plays them perfectly, i mean that a mini system needs games simple enough that you can just pick up every once in a while, play an hour or two, and forget about, most 6th gen games arent like this

if the 6th gen is not suitable for the mini treatment i doubt the 7th one would

It's a pretty smart idea, given that a lot of Sega's best games are arcade games and a lot of the best games on their consoles are arcade ports. Now if it just had a controller that was actually feasible to use. I do see USB ports on the back, which makes me hopeful that one can use another controller, maybe one of the new six-button pads that came out for the mini Genesis.

Given that Virtua Fighter is on here, it would be wonderful if Virtual-On Cyber Troopers made it too, but that would require a second stick. It's a really cool game that could use more love in the Western world.
