As the titles says, I'm trying to decide between a New 3DS XL (used, red, top IPS, no scratches on screen) and a New 2DS XL (brand new).

Price difference is roughly $40 CAD or $30 USD give or take.

Yeah, I'm also leaning towards the New 2DS XL not because it's brand new but because I think I'll prefer the weight over New 3DS XL.

I own a Switch and the weight is perfectly fine for short sessions, however if my hands ever get cramps or numb (tired) I can always Switch to a monitor with Pro Controller.

With the New 3DS/2DS XL I don't have that option, I don't like playing on portable with charging cable connected (Switch included).

I mean if I can find a used 2DS XL in near mint condition (no scratches on screen) for less I'd probably not like think twice about the decision.

Better build quality?

How bad is build quality of the New 2DS XL?

I tried the New 3DS XL before and the build quality is excellent.

I have 10 year old Wii remotes and Classic controllers that feel like less quality when compared the New 3DS XL I tried but are all still working perfectly.

The shoulder buttons on the 2ds xl seemed to me to be horrid. Bad placement that never got comfortable for me. I don't recommend it.

This makes things harder...I'll do some more research.

I take it you guys own both the New 3DS XL and New 2DS XL or at the very least spent considerable amounts of play time on both systems.

It's a reasonable debate, but as far i've seen, more towards the bad side. Lots i've people i've talked to and seen on Reddit, Discord, and other places have said how bad the build quality is. Some praise it, but very few from what i've seen. The build on the N3DSXL is amazing, lots of people have said and bought them even without using the 3D feature because how better built they are then the N2DSXL.

I've decided to go with the New 2DS XL, deciding factor is weight and price.

Sticky button don't matter too much, I'm a modder; can open up this baby with ease.

I like the internal layout of the New 2D XL better as oppose to the internal layout of the New 3DS XL.

I don't care for 3D and top IPS without bottom IPS just seems weird to me, build quality seems fine.

The only thing that bothers me slightly is the small stylus on the New 2DS XL, of course I can just grab longer aftermarket one.

I had to make the same decision for myself too. I went with the n3dsxl, suprised that I got double ips because the seller didn't mention it, I was satisfied with it.
later on 2 friends got n2dsxl instead, I tried their systems, I think I would go with the 2ds if I had to decide again, I think it looks better, less weight, build quality seems fine, easier to switch sd card, I compared tn vs ips, sure ips looks better but I actually noticed a little input lag on ips.

I'm thinking about selling it expensive because of double ips and getting 2ds xl instead, but I can't get a black unit in germany cheap and I would prefer somethink like a orange/yellow/red + black color instead.

Yeah, I should have grabbed one (at the time I was decided on a refurbished New 3DS XL) from Nintendo Canada before Covid but I was too indecisive.

I can wait Covid restrictions to calm and just play on my Switch and Wii U for now.

Why so late on the game for a 3ds system?

Bought one a few years back, I think it was Zelda Limited Edition (still have brand new charger) but someone offered good money for it before I open it so I sold it.

Been just chilling on my PC couple years before I got a Switch launch day.

The Switch made me think differently on portable consoles and Covid gave me time to game again.
