SEGA debuts 14 minutes of English gameplay footage for Yakuza: Like a Dragon

The first day of IGN's Summer of Gaming continues, with the latest topic being a developer interview and broadcast of some English gameplay for the newest game in the Yakuza franchise. In the video, we get to see 14 minutes of footage, focusing on the new combat system, which is turn-based, as opposed to previous action-based entries. The game will feature a job system, minigames, and a brand new protagonist named Kasuga Ichiban. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is planned for release this year, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Steam, Microsoft Store, and PlayStation 4.

why is yakuza still a series tbh
it's not really a sequel to shenmue nowadays
besides, if it didn't exist, super monkey ball would be good

ima use a simplification of that one nick robinson video on SMB
essentially, the creator of the super monkey ball franchise was good at it
then priorities shifted and he was made into the creator of the yakuza series which is less "pick up and play", as Sega was moving away from that genre of games because their arcade business sucked (and i speculate that's why sonic team's last good game ever was billy hatcher or something)
he realized that he preferred keeping yakuza good over keeping super monkey ball good and then his last SMB game, Banana Blitz, ruined the franchise by putting walls everywhere.

What did i read that correctly a turn based rpg omg finally i hate these new action rpgs. It always feels like just button mashing as apposed to actual strategy and gameplay. Not to mention you miss a lot of the animations with crappy camera angles jumping everywhere as you button mash and every character doing there "own thing"

In the what-if world the grass is always greener on the other side, but the other side is a fictional creation.

What's that, most of the series is an action RPG? Finally, I hate most turn-based RPGs. They're just selecting attack and the strongest magic when necessary. There's no skill involved or anything, totally.

I actually like the change from action-based to turn-based as it makes a lot of sense considering who you play as.

While I understand why the Yakuza games don't have English dubs - they take place in Japan, so of course everyone would speak Japanese - I feel like that's preventing me from getting immersed in them. I prefer English dubs, since I can then understand what people are saying without needing to read - something that's somewhat important in an interactive medium.

Take Metal Gear Solid 3, where the entire game takes place in the USSR. Everyone's seemingly speaking English, except that the Russian scientist you're sent to rescue compliments Naked Snake's Russian. Explanation? Everyone's actually speaking Russian; we, the players, just hear English because we're supposed to understand it in real-time alongside Snake and the rest of the cast.
THIS is what I like, and what I imprint onto Persona games and others where everyone should be speaking Japanese or other languages.

So when a game doesn't do this, and has only one VA language, it utterly ruins any possible chance of immersion. Yakuza, Persona Q2, PAL versions of Virtue's Last Reward for 3DS...all ruined by the lack of an English dub, in my eyes (or rather, in my ears).

Uh...if you want immersion, Yakuza subbed is actually better. The Japanese characters speak Japanese, the Chinese speak Chinese, and the few American characters that are given voices speak English. Hell, there's one recurring character (he shows up in Y1 and Y2 in a non-cameo role) that you fight in the story who attempts to speak Japanese when what he's saying is interpreted to mean something different by the main character, something he calls him out on in a sort of "Bring it, bro!" way!

I mean, unless you really want something like this to be what we get:

Which makes me wonder, given the presence of certain characters who's identities I won't spoil, how the fuck are they going to handle dubbing them given that, for a lot of longtime fans, the sub voices are THE voices for the characters? I would hope that SEGA wouldn't go about selling the sub as paid DLC for those who want it, but then again, Arc System Works did just that with the earlier Blazblue games, except it was on a per-character basis! And Sega was selling the NG+ mode for this game separately!

I fear that this may be a dark wind blowing for this franchise given the hubris I'm sensing from the publisher...

Personally, I always prefer dubbed, for the reasons I mentioned earlier; that dubbed video might not have the best voice acting, but at least it's something I can comprehend and get into, get immersed in.
People say the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 dub is awful, and while I do think it's a bit chuckle-worthy at points, it's how I get immersed in the world; I can understand what's being said in combat, what's being said in cutscenes.

Providing an English dub for new fans who don't enjoy the disparity between spoken and caption languages, as a feature in an update, or as a low-priced DLC option, would be nice. The English dub, in this case, not the Japanese original, like it is for many other games (Fire Emblem, Xenoblade 2, etc).

I don't know that I have ever heard a dub is more immersive argument before. It stands to some reason, possibly even more in games if we don't see nice facial expressions to go along with it, but I don't think I can get to slating a work for not including one.

Easier to have something on in the background. I'm too lazy to read subs. Subs make me miss the action.

Sure all things that might well detract from some approaches.

Give it a couple of years to where voice synthesis (as it stands right now/some three or so years ago then sample size is already low to create a workable one, and pretty modest to "your mother could not tell") is type it in and select an emotion (which might even be auto suggested from context) and I imagine things will change as costs to do the dub drop through the floor.

aaaaaaaand into the trash it goes
the old yakuza is just smash same buttons over and over again, but with RPG style you can have way more movesets, plus we all knew we pick Yakuza for excellent plot and countless sidequests.

More movesets? In a series where, with Zero, Ishin, Kiwami, and Judgement, you have four distinct styles with their own strengths, moves, heat actions, and progression trees? Let alone with Yakuza 4 and 5 where you have 4-5 playable characters with an ASSLOAD of content with each having their own substories, character-specific activities, and, in Yakuza 5's case, each character has their own city!?

I'm getting the sense that some people here haven't actually played the damn games they're making claims about...

i have all collection of Yakuza series except Shin, maybe i played too much of them and i never realize they have so many movesets, cauz Sega simply recycle those fight styles game after game. Didn't you realize that ''Beast style'' is incredibly similar to a char from Y4?

Sega milked Yakuza series with same main character for 2 decades at same formula, guess it's time to let Kiryu go and focus to make something new.

I'm the same way alot of people talk shit about "English Dub" but they don't even understand or speak Japanese the only time I ever watched english sub wsa when I was trying to watch a anime that was ahead of the english dub.

This is why I could never get into Final Fantasy because it was mostly turn based. Turn base games are not even real-life simulation because nobody is just going to stand still and get hit you are going to move out the way. I like Crisis Core and FF15 because it is action RPG ... I like and dislike Yakuza because you were limited in the game it kinda reminds me like beat dowm fists of vengeance
