Hideo Kojima discusses success of Death Stranding, says one of his recent projects was cancelled

Q83YVwt.png

Death Stranding was a success, both critically and financially, according to creator Hideo Kojima. The famous game director discussed his latest release in an interview with Livedoor, commenting on the fact that sales proved to be strong enough for Kojima Productions to make enough to recoup the development costs of the game, and to fund their next title. In terms of future projects, Kojima is still working with his team on the upcoming PC port of Death Stranding, alongside preparation for the studio's next project, which is still unannounced. That doesn't seem to be everything he's been working on lately, however, as he mentioned that he was secretly working on a "major project", but it had ended up cancelled. As for what's next for Kojima, it won't be anything involving Metal Gear or PT, apparently; when Kojima was questioned on if the rumors of him attempting to buy either IP from Konami were true, he laughed and said such rumors were a complete hoax.

I got it day one but realising it was a walking simulator, with a stupid story, I returned it. I don't know, as I grow older I see these convoluted "deep" japanese storylines as just dumb shit they were not intelligent enough to convey in a cohesive manner.

So I waited to get it for my collection. Picked it up yesterday for £13.
You're just not open enough...! Embrace the game with your heart and listen to the voice of Hideo that gently whispers in your ear.

..wasn't my kind of game either.

"Gamers" are too barbaric to appreciate and enjoy something like Death Stranding. Their pleb-kind of behavior is called a mere-exposure-effect, they'd rather see something they've seen 1000 times before, instead of to engage in something completely new and different. If the world would consist of "gamers" only, we'd probably still bath in dinosaur shit and eat rocks for breakfast.

If "mere exposure" effect was at play here, every gamer would buy it, considering it is a walking simulator for the most part, and most people are quite familiar with walking.

source? Clinical Psych PHD

P.s: It is a convoluted, mediocre game in every aspect. Poor storyline, redundant gameplay mechanics. The game is trying to be "Kojima's next big thing" so hard, it forgets it is meant to be fun. For the non-masochists, that is.

Haha. But he's so intelligent and groundbreaking. All that pseudo-intellectual BS. I mean, if you don't see it as the next best thing since sliced bread, you're just not very smart eh? Just kidding. Agreed.

Collection purposes. Plus, at £13 I would be stupid to refuse it.

I wonder, how did you realized that it's just a walking simulator with a stupid story? From your first 30 min? Please share your wisdom.

Collecting something you think is a piece of horseshit lol - put tht 13 quid towards a ps5

I know. I knowwww. Stop making me regret it haha.

Don't get me wrong. But when one achieves a certain amount of emotional maturity, one just doesn't connect with things as they would have in their childhood.

example: At 12, I was knee deep in the "lore" of Evangelion and its supposed deep-meaning behind parent-child relationships, self-loathing and abuse. Blah blah blah.

Now, as an adult I realise it is a barely there mecha anime, which feels disjointed simply because the director had a nervous breakdown due to his bad relationship midway through. The studio pulled the plug as he was another "Kojima" asking for too much money and he ended up finishing the show in a rushed manner leaving the world to dig deep for meaning where there is none.

At 20, I was knee deep in the Kojima myth. The man made one half decent game called MGS on the PS1, which was only groundbreaking for its time as it did not have much competition. As any Japanese director, he let it go to his head and shat out MGS2 which, we all know, was, well, not MGS1. Kojima realised he had screwed up the MGS1 formula and decided to go back to it with MGS3 (which is why it is set in the path). HOWEVER, MGS3 was created with Kojima being on a very tight leash from both Sony and Konami.

Obviously MGS3 is a good game and a success. Once again Kojima let it get to his head and shat out a feeble MGS4 which was a success based on the myth of the man more than any real merit. This led him to be greenlit for MGS5 which is again, immature and pathetic whilst trying desperately to come off as genius.

The issue with people like Miyazaki, Kojima and Anno isn't themselves, it has to do with "celebrity" culture they're exposed to when they gain notoriety in the west. Americans are, by nature, fanatics. When they like something, simply liking it is not enough, it needs to be worshiped in its utter all-encompassing totality. This is incredibly intoxicating for people like Kojima, Anno and Miyazaki and they tend to go off the rails. Anyone would, because in their own cultures they're not used to being treated as "gods".

Its his arrogance and behavior during the development of MGSV which got him fired from Konami because having the man on their projects was just not a profitable proposition. However, in the west, this was taken as heresy, but to Konami Kojima was just a man who was doing his job but becoming problematic.

I need to explain the above before I get into why Death Stranding is a humbling embarrassment for Kojima. The game reeks of Kardashianisms. Kojima used his myth to reel in investors. From renting his offices to getting finances to get the project off the ground.

Story - Your typical post-apocalyptic snooze fest. Its trying to hard to come off as intelligent it is actually quite cringey and stupid. Plus, if you don't see the virtue signalling in a female president, the baby in the bottle being a girl at the end (awwww so hopefull - F off), to the whole "beached things" BS, come on. The story could have been good but Kojima throws everything from every anime and manga and japanese game trope at it as though he's hoping something would stick.

Gameplay - The inventory management, and movement mechanics are over-cooked. But what else is there? Its just tedious. I have seen people argue "well that was the genius of Kojima, he wanted the game to be tedious". Well, sure, but in that case, don't criticise people for calling it boring and tedious, just accept it as Kojima achieving his goal. The only issue is, games are meant to be FUN first and foremost and when a game works against the player as actively as Death Stranding does, in terms of its mechanics, it misses the very point of its existence.

Graphics - Utterly beautiful.

Sound - I swear if I hear one more pretentious "orchestral" droning and whining I will do myself an injury. Literally, change the record Kojinma.

Anyways, the above is only my opinion because you asked. I am not expecting you to change yours and please don't try to change mine. We have wasted enough time on the topic. I am just typing this because its a lazy summer afternoon and I hope you realise people CAN sometimes develop their opinion by experiencing the game first hand. I don't hate the game or I wouldn't have bought it discounted. However, I do not love it and might not even play it, because when I did play it with my friend, we both came away from our 15 hour run thinking "this is bullshit".

Sure, 15 hours might not be enough to get to the meat of death stranding, but part of being a thinking, rational individual one knows when one has given something a "fair chance". ;)

Death Stranding was masterpiece, it's gameplay sure wasn't for everyone though.

I'm happy they recouped the cost because this game was slammed by tons of people for ridiculous reason by people who haven't even played the thing.

I may have had more fun with this game if I treated it more like an action game and engaged in combat more often, but the way I ended up playing it was avoiding virtually all combat and just focusing on the cargo transport part of the game to move the story along. I enjoyed the beautiful environments, and overall I'm glad I experienced it one time all the way to the end. But it is the type of game I'll never touch again after one playthrough.

Eh, I'd rather have Kojima make something he wants to make as opposed to being forced to do something he has no passion for.
I think most feel the same, but he has to do mainstream stuff, with a reasonable budget, if he wants to continue making the things he wants. Otherwise, he risk not having any money to do any of his projects.

Which is why I think he needs someone to rein him in when he gets too absorbed into his ideas. Like, the idea to use feces to defeat the ghost things (I'm sure they have a name, but I haven't played the game yet) is pretty WTF on its own, and its neat that you have to sneak around these things lest you either die or get brought into a miniboss fight, but that can't just be the highlight of the game by itself. You need more than just "going from point a to point b" as your gameplay hook with an admittedly interesting take on delivery workers that wouldn't be out of place in his games sure.

I think Death Stranding needed a whole lot more as a threat in addition to the occassional looters, the ghost things, and just more to do in general.

I can't say I've played the game myself (I don't own a PS4 anymore), so I have no idea how all of this plays out, or how on or off point I am with these observations based on what I've heard or the one review of the game I saw.

He wil go down in history for helping playstation what it is today with the metal gear games

Definitely. He's not alone though, so many good brands brought the Playstation brand to existence out of nothing.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

This game is not the worst game ever, but it's definitely amongst them.

The ONLY reason it sold enough to cover costs was Sony marketing it and mostly the hype around MGS developer now making his own game.

Kojima had to do a different game entirely, but he's tried so hard to appear as revolutionary and the creator of unique games, he has lost track.

I have no issues with him making edgy, different or weird games. I'm honestly glad some people liked it, the problem is his studio won't survive if he can't make games that are popular.

THIS time Sony put up the funds, were hands off to give him full creative control and time to polish. He needs to make cash, not just a little.

He can guide a team to make a masterpiece, I genuinely believe that, he's created some of the most enjoyable and memorable games ever. But I am not beginning to believe those rumours of Konami having to keep reeling in his leash (sounds offensive but not my intent).

I genuinely hope Kojima and his team create a more enjoyably game next, even if it's not, mainstream or casual. As long as he has a reliable ip or cashflow he can call on, he will be safer to venture in experimental styles.

He basically needs to become Platinum without accepting money from Chin-I mean, Tencent's money. Make good games and earn a lot of money off of more "mainstream games," earn people's trust, and then you can go and make the next Nier.

Can you imagine Hideo Kojima working with Yoko Taro!?

I was gutted that Kojima didn't get to make any more games using the Fox Engine, it was extremely impressive, now it's just lingering, wasting away (due to others progress).

Imagine what type of games they could have made after getting to grips with it and making improvements after MGSV.

Kojima could make his own engine, but I expect him to use 3rd party engines like he is now. Making his own would be phenomenal, but would take at least 2 years, if they were free and very efficient, but likely more. I suspect he will do what most companies do, source a 3rd party engine and customise. Maybe in a few years, they will have earned enough and build up a big enough team, as well as have their own identity. Once they know the type of games they want to make, they will know what features they want to build the engine around. But I still see them using a 3rd party even then to be honest.
