HP reveals its new VR headset, the Reverb G2, and opens for pre-orders

hp reverb.JPG

HP just announced the next iteration of its headset that lets you step into another reality, the virtual reality. Developed in collaboration with Valve and Microsoft, the HP Reverb G2 is a $599 VR headset planned to release this fall. It features speakers and lenses designed by Valve and offers a resolution of 2160 x 2160 per eye through its LCD panels. It comes with a 6 meter cable, 4 built-in cameras for tracking and a pair of controllers that seem inspired from the Oculus'.

To satisfy your VR gaming needs, the device is compatible with both SteamVR and Windows Mixed Reality.

HP made a handy specs comparison chart to better gauge how the Reverb G2 stacks up agains the competition. More details are available in the official page linked below.

The HP Reverb G2 is available to pre-order at $599 now via the official page, slated for a release this fall.

[QUOTE="The inside out tracking is supposedly near perfect on Oculus Quest and Rift S. WMR headsets so far have been using "last gen" inside out tracking which doesn't work as well. Hopefully this has better tracking.
It doesn't need to track everything. It just needs enough information to track your position accurately, and have cameras on the sides to track the controllers past your FOV. Drones can track their position accurately enough using just a single camera and some other sensors to hover in the air.[/QUOTE]

I've heard others say this, but I only have the WMR currently, so wish to avoid this tech going forward.

The issue isn't tracking controllers it can see, obviously the cameras / sensor can see the controllers. The issue is when your range of movement leaves the positions the cameras can see. A drone isn't trying to determine the position of external devices it isn't observing, I think you are confusing which tech does which.

A drone is using coordinates and GPS to determine location, with gyrosensors for stability.
These headsets use cameras modern tracking tech, similar to PS wands to keep track of controllers (hence the lights on the control pad, for position and orientation). Once they loose sight of the controllers, they have to guess where they are.

Perhaps Valve have helped Microsoft with their algorithms, for positioning when out of sight, this would only work for split seconds though, outside of that problems occur. All I can think of is the new models disable the tracking when the lose sight, and pick up tracking much quick when they re-enter vision.

Honestly I don't think it's worth $500 plus.. The guy I got mine from wanted $350 but after a day of saying $200 is my Max offer he gave in... It's cool in small doses.. NETFLIX & films are great but if u wear it too long you definitely get motion sickness kinda feeling.. Kinda when I used to love playing my 3DS.. In 3D for hours & hours finishing Zeldas.. Ect or watching Moflex films in 3D... After playing then my eyes would go bonkers for a while.. It's 10 times worse with VR.... I just don't think VR is truly ready yet.. Nor the games for it... But I'm certainly sure they will be one day... & the price had to drop for it to become more than a expensive toy... Novelty type

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Completely agree Half Life Alx just seemed like a showcase demo.. Looked so good in the pictures ect looked like a deep game like HL1 or HL2... & the walking dead there's fun to be had but still over hyped.. Pavlov is the one.. I played the most.. & everyone wants to play if I set it up...
Try Boneworks. That is my favorite VR game.

Alyx feels restrictive in comparison to the freedom you're given in Boneworks.

I have a Rift S and 99.9% of the time the controllers will not leave the range of the cameras.

Come back to me with hardware up to the job at hand and some content to play on it, and able to be plug and play in whatever video standard will be used to manage it, and I will pay attention.
Any hardware capable of 8ish tflops or better is up to the job, so both PS5 and XBSX should have a pretty easy go of it in the VR space. As far as content goes, the world can never get enough, and that applies to pancake gaming just as well as VR. I've already got 182 VR games on Steam, about half of which I'd say are plenty high quality enough, the rest of which came cheap/free in bundles or promotions.

And video standard? Who honestly gives half a fuck? Most are DisplayPort, some are HDMI. Either way you just plug it in once and forget it, like any other monitor.

Sorry man, I don't have a rift, only the WMR. Which games do you have? I've played a few where your hands can easily be used outside of view (throwing a grenade, holstering weapon, etc, but there are more).

When I say hardware I don't care about the computers to run it on. I care about the screens it is playing on inside the headset. If the computers required end up having to be the then equivalent of a £3K machine today I will wait a while again but I doubt it will be as things already are there if there were headsets worth having.
Content wise I am back to meaningfully improved or essential for play (and good) consistently happening. A bunch of tech demos I can knock out via rental is not that.

Video standard. Nice to see the current efforts are not silly standards, however I still don't care to be locked into a vendor/DRM standard which they seem to be heading towards -- I know why they are trying it but it matters not to me for this one.

I don't know when we first saw scifi predict VR headsets to be the thing of the future but they were right whatever it was, assuming the even less likely step of matrix or eyeball implant does not happen in the meantime, however much like the last few attempts at it I don't see this current crop paying off and instead can happily ignore for another few cycles.
When it is like 3d cards in the late 90s, analogue sticks on consoles, the end of keyboard for FPS games and rise of mouse and I can't reasonably ignore it (plus the other stuff mentioned, hopefully such that I can pick from a bunch of them like I will pick a screen, printer, 3d card or whatever today) without missing out then come back to me.

Index. 120hz, the best controllers on the market. This HP headset is coming in at a bad price point, imo. The resolution is nice, but if that's all it has to offer in comparison to even the Quest? Not even a competition, imo.
Thanks, you sound like you speak from experience. I guess I'm just a little worried about buying a $1k setup and having a "screen door" or being able to make out distinct pixels that I might not have with this cheaper option.

Wish there was some place I could go and thoroughly try this gear out before putting money into it.

Same. All I have is a best buy and they're boring. From what I've read, the Index is the most pleasant display to look at. Even Samsungs Odyssey+ HMD is really good about the screen door effect. The tracking isn't that great on it, though. Great budget device that constantly goes on sale for as low as $250.

My only gripe with HP is that the resolution per eye being the only notable upgrade from the Quest or even the Rift S isn't worth an additional $200 IMO.

Yeah I'd definitely go with an Index if I was starting from scratch. I do own the controllers, so I know for a fact those are excellent. I got in on the early bird Kickstarter pricing for the Pimax 5K+, and a recent firmware update even took it from 90Hz to 110Hz. I guess the newer models can do up to 144Hz, but I'm certainly not complaining given the price I paid.

144hz? Daaaannnnggg. If I played more than once a month I'd have to look into that.

I just got an Oculus Quest and I love it. It's the only VR set I've used other than my phone so I can't compare it to a higher end wired set. At first it did feel a little low rez but after a short time I just accepted that's how the "world" looks and it wasn't a problem. What I'm actually posting about though is the remote desktop app. With the app I can play Steam VR wireless with my Quest. I think that is something that should be focused on with VR helmets. Basicaly make them thin clients that can be used with a PC or console. Not everyone will have great wifi like me but with wifi 6 coming out shortly and then extra radio bandwith being given to wifi soon the abilities of wifi networks are about to explode.
Virtual Desktop blew me away with how good it works! I was already having a blast with the Quest as it is my first VR headset.
I really believe Quest + VD is the best option at the moment.

I honestly hope the VR shit die, like virtual glove, one day

Actually it's ok if VR shit is around for casual fun here and there, just as long as they are not main way to play video-games. *cough* Alyx*cough*

I tried a lot of shit, but i always find my self going back to big screen or small (that's not 5cm from my eyes) and a JoyPad/mouse&keyboard.

That's a good deal, seen many people selling sealed ones for +200 than RSP that's why it's out of stock everywhere. Yeah indeed wearing it for 2+ hours will make you dizzy. I agree VR is still in development and whatever experience we are having now is just beta.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Nice to see that Valve and Microsoft have collaborated, still desperate to get VR to take off ($$$).

I have a mixed reality headset and can assure you, it is faulty by design, the outward looking cameras, can't see and track everything, causes a disorientating mess when in game. If they could combine this tech, with say even just one light house (even a low cost one similar to (Sony's and Microsoft's camera tech), it would be very good, but for some reason Microsoft seem to be against it.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I have Pavlov (mainly bought it to support a good dev, with a good development ethic), it's a good game, but as I have a mixed Reality headset, I feel like throwing up if I play.

I Considered Valves headset, but I stepped back and gave it some though. Whilst Half Life: Alyx, is much more than a demo, it's still only one game, not really immense either (a cross between on rail shooter and small levels - but Valve, so premium and enjoyable). SO £1000 for what you have experienced also, short burst of fun, then collect dust.

By the time the next glut of AAA games are here, we'll have much better headsets and tech again. (I know)

Could get Xbox Series AND PS5, but again, this is a different argument altogether.
Agreed, maybe in a couple of years with quarentine and all will be like Ready player one. (Hopefully by then quarentine is over)

It's actually a great deal the only reason I did take the dive I was kinda 50/50 on a ps3 VR as I just wanted to get through Skyrim Again.. But then I found Morroblivion which I'm still playing atm... It's huge & I've done skyrim on so many platforms now it's too samey but if I bought it for $500 I'd probably send it back to Amazon or whatever...

Half life alx yeah.. It was great looking but isn't deep enough completely feels like a really good tech demo & I absolutely love Half Life 2.. & black Mesa which is half life 1 re skined.. But it's nowhere in the league.. Shooting feels off key.. Walking dead I was so looking forward to that too but in the end its just so so but Pavlov is just great all around... Resident Evil 7 just amazing! & I'm not ashamed to o say it got jump scares all over the place... Which made it so much fun.. Long story short its one of those things where you do love it but in the back of your mind you always thinking it could have been better if... They did this or that.. Watching films though is great.. But I have a HD projector & using that doesn't give me hardcore motion sickness.. & that's what I use for most my games especially the WIIU ones or my pc.. I still love some older wii games like wii sports on the projector.. Or Mario's or Zeldas ( Nintendo fanboy here).. It's one of those things when friends pop over and notice it just have to try & that's really the best part watching them goof around while we giggle at them... & seeing what they are doing in game on the projector screen.... I think it will be good in the future but as of now too expensive games are not up to par.. & even the best ones feel just OK.. & demo'ish if you know what I mean...

It's my 1st gaming pc ever I think it's good I've grown to love my rig only had it since Xmas..

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 6 core processor Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 ti 16 gig ram

My older brother sent it from London to USA as a surprise gift... I'm sure there is better but not paying for games or going to gamestop and getting ripped off every time is worth buying... He been banging on about gaming pc since forever I just never bothered but he has been building breaking ( overclocking) them forever... & is a complete game snob hahaha & hates consoles... Where I love my consoles always have... Always will... But not paying for games having switch & ps3 emulator and all the others is the way forward for me so many games to get for free so easily... & many random pc games I never heard of Morroblivion is my favorite atm ect ect loads of horror games not on consoles not having to pay to play online ect ect
Lastly being able to my games library on my Ps Vita using Moonlight.. Was just amazing... I only found out about moonlight recently...
