EA's upcoming games will offer a free upgrade to run on next-gen hardware

GkU3xuR.png

With the month of May having just arrived, quarterly financial briefings are ringing out across the gaming industry. One such company is Electronic Arts, which has just published its Q4 results. During the earnings call involving those financial results, EA's COO--Blake Jorgensen--told shareholders that "this year the phasing includes the effect of revenue recognition from the games we are launching for the current generation of consoles that can also be upgraded for free for the next generation."

That statement implies that EA will be offering, much like other game publishers such as CD Projekt Red, free upgrades to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions of their upcoming 2020 PlayStation 4 and Xbox One games lineup. We know for certain that Xbox titles will offer this ability, through Microsoft's Smart Delivery feature, but whether or not this will also be available on the PlayStation 5 is another question that has yet to be answered.

Now away with microtransactions and games not working properly without day-1 patches.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

All I want is the ability to unplug external hdd/ssd from xbox one and plug it to Xbox Series X and play them all without redownloading.
That won't make sense if the Series X version is an actual different version of the game and not just the Xbone version runing in backwards compatibility mode.

I don't follow xbox much, but Xbox Series X? yah that's not confusing at all. Xbox One, One S, One X...and the new console is Series X?
is this gonna be Microsoft's Wii U is poor naming choices?
They have also put in a pathetic SSD in their machine.

At first I thought that PS5 will be worse because of the slightly less powerful GPU. But the cutting edge SSD in the PS5 is a literal game changer (it is over twice as fast as Series X's horrid slow one). There is no SSD available at the moment for the PC market that is as fast as the PS5s. I really want to get my hands on a PS5.

With how common the "late gen remake on next gen" games were on Xbox One and PS4, it really pleases me to see this slowly becoming the standard for console games.
I can't remember exactly but smart delivery might only be limited to the first two years.

I am pretty sure Microsoft has asked devs to make sure all game releases for Series X the first 2 years that it is out... that they are also released on Xbox One.

Shit shit. Bad tech, bad graphics. Shame on MS.

EA: Stand back, I'm gonna do what's called a pro gamer shareholder move
There is nothing wrong with making pro shareholder moves, they are a for-profit business after all.

And this move seems to be beneficial for players, too. Unlike microtransactions, most DLC and games that don't work properly with just the disc (they need "patches") and may even take 2+ years in cases of online multiplayer games before they run properly enough.

A patch means like... a patch on a tire or a small patch on a piece of clothing. It does not mean to create an entire piece of clothing out of patches.

I thought the SSD in the Series X is your NVME x4 SSD like the ones you can purchase for PC, the 3000MB r/w.

With all those "micro"transactions their games should be free to begin with, also all of their sport games are basically just a dlc if not a patch of the one they put out in the previous year.

I would argue the Xbox one already took that place

The fact that they continue this trend of convoluted names boggles the mind

I doubt that
There's no way PS5 is going to have cutting edge tech like that and still keep a reasonable price point
I honestly wouldnt be surprised if this ended up being a ps3/3ds situation where the main console just costs way too much at launch. funny too, considering that the main reason both those consoles were so expensive in the first place was because they had a monopoly on the market last gen. considering the PS4 sold the most copies of all the 8th gen consoles and was considered the best of all of them too, that doesnt seem too far off from what will be happening this gen.

Uh...it's just a little faster than my M.2 NVMe, right? That's not necessarily "OMG, GET THIS NOW!" levels of atteactability to the idea for me atm.
