Star Wars Battlefront now has online multiplayer. That statement might seem obvious to those familiar with EA's Star Wars: Battlefront series, but in this case, we mean the original Battlefront, from 2004. The game, which initially launched with online servers through the GameSpy service, has not had network features since the service shut down in 2014. An update went out today for owners of the game on Steam, which showed the addition of a few language options, as well as online multiplayer support through Steam.

Jedis (and Siths) seemed too strong, the whole point of the first game was that you were infantry who fought on the front lines of Star Wars battles, not main characters who would appear in fights they weren't in to annihilate the opponent.

Battlefront 2 already got it added a few years back I believe.

This is great news as I had a lot of fun playing this back in the day. And the content and diversity in this was way better than the first reboot.

Battlefront 2 already did get a post-GameSpy patch for renewed multiplayer, FYI (to those who weren't aware).

I have a major soft spot for Battlefront 1 (2004), it was my first game and there's something to be said about the aesthetic and the UI design fitting so well with the universe... but frankly, BF1 (2004) is functionally dated in every metric compared to BF2 (2005).

Better gameplay mechanics? BF2 is quicker, snappier, and (probably?) more balanced. Plus, Starfighters and space combat were just major selling points on their own (isn't that essentially what we complained about Battlefront 1 (2015) not having in the first place?).
Community support? BF2 has more of it, in terms of playerbase and mods.
Don't like the Jedi? I mean, they were in BF1 (2004) as basically just invulnerable bots that did fuck all so them being playable is really only a net-positive, but... you can play without them in BF2 (2005) just by playing in Classic mode!
And if you want to play BF1 (2004) content in BF2 (2005)? Bam, Conversion Pack; literally every map between the two games, plus some extra cut ones for shits and giggles.

I mean, I won't necessarily complain that another game gets some life support, because every game deserves to be preserved. But, it just seems rather redundant considering the sequel exists, and has had support for longer at this point.

Hehe, think I saw (only) the headline news of this on Eurogamer and thought 'so fukkin what' until finding out on here that it's the OG!
Great game, loved it back in the day, and actually had another few goes a couple of weeks back! For those that are moaning why it's not the second though, think about it for a minute lads.... it's probably coming soon! Enjoy this one for a few weeks, let em know it's worth it to do the sequel, and we should all be playing that soon too - win win! (and if they skipped this out and just gave the 2nd the online treatment, well you'd probably still moan then - or at least the BF1 lovers would - patience!)
