Hey all, I've been doing a lot of research on this forum and wanted to join due to a problem that just cropped up on my old Wii where the screen stays black after powering it up.
It is rarely used nowadays, but I do like to turn it on every now and then to play some old WiiWare and VC titles. I probably last used it two months ago with no issues.
I also installed Homebrew Channel on it years ago using Super Smash Bros. Brawl, after following the same steps I used to install it on my Wii U (which still works perfectly fine). That's all I've done, no custom themes or anything like that.

My Wii Remote's batteries were long dead, and after changing them and attempting to sync with the Wii, it took a solid minute or so to know something was up as the remote would not sync.
I have a Roku TV, and the original cables. I tested the cables and connection with another Wii that I have, and the cables are just fine. This Wii boots right up to the menu, no issues at all with this TV.
When I power on this Wii, the blue ring flashes once, the disc tray makes its usual noises, and that's it. The LED burns green. I can even put a disc in and eject it.

Anybody have any ideas to get past this issue? I tried holding reset when I powered it on, but that didn't work. I have a 256MB and a 2GB SD card I around that I can try to use.

Thanks so much for your help!

I can’t say this is your issue for sure, but it seems like the Bluetooth module needs to be replaced.

I say that because similar symptoms happened to me in 2009 or so (black screen, wiimotes wont sync, etc) and after tons of research I took the gamble of buying a replacement module (corona aside, they cost next to nothing), disassembled the Wii, and replaced it.

Keep researching. If all fails, then give this a try.

Hello.:)

Do maybe have a Change to try an other Video Cable -> Component Cable or maybe an HDMI Converter ?
I am not sure, but it maybe can have to do with the Videochip and/or Signal.:(

Thank you.:)

I did try using an HDMI converter, but that didn't work either.

I do have a functioning Wii that I tested with the black-screen Wii's video cables, and the cables functioned properly.

Ironically, I don't think I tried the black-screen Wii with the cables from the functioning Wii, so I will try that while I wait for the Bluetooth module to come in.

Hey all,

Just an update...I took apart the Wii and installed a new Bluetooth Module. I heard it click in place and all, but when I reassembled the system...the Wii still boots to a black screen and Wiimotes will not sync with it.

Any other suggestions to escalate this? Thanks for your help.

Hello.:)

Thank you for your Update.
I am very sorry to hear, the Bluetooth Modul was not the Issue...:(

I am pretty sure you also did a AC Adapter Reset before:
https://en-americas-support.nintend...ail/a_id/3113/~/how-to-reset-a-wii-ac-adapter

Also you have unplugged all attached Devices when you boot up your Wii - USB(HDD) Devices/GameCube Memory Cards/Controllers.

I would suspect the WiFi Module too.....it has the similar "Symptoms".:(

I am sorry,I unfortunately have no more other Options.:(

Good Luck and
Thank you.:)

Thanks for your suggestions!

I tried the AC Adapter Reset just now, but the black screen remains. There is nothing attached to my Wii - no controllers, flash drives, or SD cards.

Are there any online tutorials for replacing the WiFi module? I see them for sale online for cheap, so it's something I wouldn't mind trying as well.

I also see posts referencing PriiLoader or Boot Mii, is that an option? Thanks for your help!

I did give that a try. I tried holding reset while powering on, too, but to no avail.

You have already tried it...:)

It is in German but the Pictures are very good:
https://de.ifixit.com/Anleitung/Nintendo+Wii+Wi-Fi+Platine+austauschen/3457

For you it starts with SCHRITT 25
(You have already opened the Wii)

Here is maybe exact the same in English:
https://www.sosav.com/guides/game-consoles/nintendo/nintendo-home/wii/wifi-board/

It is a little "trickier" because of the Antenna Cables...:(

Good Luck.:)

I would "recommend" first to buy a new used Wii...
But then I thought "Where is the Fun ? Disassembling a Wii and changing a broken WiFi Module makes really more Fun today.":D

I wish you Fun and good Luck for your Repair.:yay:

True, the best option is just getting a functioning Wii. I just want to get some of the games and especially save files for My Pokemon Ranch and others off this system and to my Wii U. That's the trouble.

Yes,that is of course difficult with an Black Screen/no working Wii....:(
Is your Wii softmodded and did you maybe used an USBLoader and the emuNAND Save Option on SD Card instead to the real Wii Memory?
Then you only need the SaveGame Manager GX and your SD Card to transfer your Saves.:)

Thank you.:)

It does have the Homebrew channel...does that count as a softmod? I'd certainly like to try these routes!
