SEGA 60th anniversary webpage now live, introduces Sega Shiro character

mC44oIg.png

When June 3rd rolls around this year, SEGA will turn 60 years old. To prepare for the celebration of this anniversary, SEGA has introduced a new webpage called Go SEGA that features an interactive timeline, a message from the company's chairman, and a video starring "Sega Shiro". Sega Shiro is a reference to quirky retro SEGA commercials that featured Segata Sanshiro. Amusingly, Shiro is played by the son of the actor who portrayed Segata Sanshiro, tying together the 90s throwback. Though currently unsubtitled, you can view the video on SEGA's official YouTube channel.

The message from SEGA's chairman also mentions that the company has "special contents" planned for reveal this year. We already know that SEGA has promised monthly Sonic news reveals, so we'll also hopefully see some new announcements regarding other SEGA IP's.

This year, sixty years will have passed since Nihon Goraku Bussan Co. Ltd., the predecessor of Sega, was established on June 3, 1960. We are indebted to everyone who has patronized the Sega Group for many years, and would like to express our deep gratitude to all of you.

We want to astonish the world with breath-taking experiences that no one in the world has ever imagined. We want to be a company that continues to provide inspirational experiences to everyone in the new world of the future.

That is why we must overcome all obstacles and keep taking on new challenges.

The key message of the 60th anniversary, “GO SEGA”, expresses such aspirations.

The SEGA Group is planning a variety of special contents for this 60th anniversary. Through these special contents, we will deliver the passion of the Sega Group to the entire world.

Just to clear things up some... SEGA has NOT been in the (video) gaming industry since 1960. And in 69' they were sold
to an entirely other entity.

The first console ever made by coleco didn't come out until 1972. till this point they made regular old school coin slot machines (for gambling) like the ones you see in vegas, atlantic city...etc

their first actual video game was pong-tron in 1973, but they really didn't come into their own as a video game company until the late 70's with the video arcade boom.

So while SEGA is 60yrs old, their "video game" existence is really only about 47, not 60. And by celebrating 60yrs now, they can celebrate their 50 years in "video gaming" 3 yrs from now. Great marketing!

Is that a Saturn in the GO pic? Are they actually acknowledging its existence?
It is indeed! If you go to their home page, they cycle through various images, including an After Burner arcade cabinet, Valkyria Chronicles, Persona, Sonic, the Dreamcast, Crazy Taxi, anything they've had a hand in. They also show an SG 1000, and I feel less people know about that one than the Saturn lol.

Surprised Sega is still a thing... they had so many opportunities to work with other groups but they failed to do that and also bad management led to their demise.

I am thankful for the Sonic and Yakuza series

Maito Fujioka does remind me of Hiroshi Fujioka a little, but back when Hiroshi portrayed Kamen Rider, rather than when he portrayed Segata Sanshiro.
I'd love to see more Sega Shiro stuff from now on! maybe put him in commercials of SEGA games that come out soon..
