Emulation (Not piracy if you rip your own game. It is piracy if you download said game, even if you own them.), save backup (checkpoint), Linux (To play some PC game on the go. Not everyone has the money for a gaming laptop.), homebrew games, cheats...
There's many reason one would want to have control over its console that does not involve piracy.

I understand but for me personally that makes zero sense. Linux isnt even that well on Switch and save backup you have on the subscription service cloud.... no point ripping your own game when you can buy it from the eshop. I totally understand you though there is maybe a small percentage of people that not pirate but for me personally the soul purpose of me owning a gaming laptop was to pirate and that includes my other CFW systems.

To be very honest with you I play more of the games I had bought vs the ones I pirated. When you pirate a game you lose the value of it and 9/10 times you would download like 50 games and barely finish 10. I enjoy playing Mario Maker 2 online and Mario Kart 8 online. Online feels so alive while playing by yourself the game gets very easy and dull.

Considering I have all the current gen consoles and the gaming laptop for anyone that truly care about pirating the gaming laptop is the best choice. Next best choice is the Xbox One with Gamepass since most released games are available on there..EA pass get you all the battle field games and cool stuff. I mainly play my Xbox honestly.

More like I download 200 games and finish maybe 1. But that's the beauty of CFW, I get to try out all the games I'm not willing to pay for. Most of the games I actually wanted, I bought before I even hacked my Switch, so that's why the games I pirate usually end up unfinished, since they weren't games I was that interested in to begin with.

If it's not for piracy what's the point of having CFW?
I mean I hacked my switch just because I found the idea of programming my own games/apps for the Switch cool, and I'm glad I did tbh! I've learned a whole heap about computers in general and it's been more fun than playing games online, I've got my PC for that :P

Had I waited a few months I could have avoided the ban but that was my fault for not staying offline

Payed subscription. Why would I pay for a service, when I legally can have an application for free?

You missed my point. I wasn't talking about ripping Switch game, I was talking about emulation.

I download games and store them whenever I get ready I'll play them. That's why the next gen doesnt phase me I have too many games to play.

That's good you and other few people are the minority that actually use the homebrew instead of pirate.

To my knowledge you cant backup your saves yourself due to the fact of glitching saves and abuse. I understand emulation but again it doesn't make sense to spend $300 on a console when you can buy like a $100 android tablet that has more functionality than the switch (on the emulated side) I have a CFW switch and I'll say it's the best handheld out right now but I wouldnt have modded it if I couldn't get free games but to each of thier own.

Let’s get back on topic!

Does the Switch need to connect to Nintendo’s servers, or is it good enough to just be online? Would it suffice to connect with DNS90 blocking Nintendo?

You need the online subscription. Crash Nitro you need the online subscription and pokemon to get the dens and etc you need online and many other games tie down thier events to the subscription.

That would suck though. Not everyone can afford a subscription, and those events are a staple to Animal Crossing. I feel that those who cannot afford the subscription are getting ripped off.

I saw a mention on a SwitchPiracy subreddit that SciresM is working on a workaround/spoof for the online check, is there any truth to this?

For the record, animal crossing events would only happen via game updates or patches. Ways to do this would be probably possible offline as long as you have the latest updates. As for getting them on your CFW switch, you can try to use the match with local users function to get the latest update from another system without needing to go online. Once you have the patch installed, the said event that is included in that said update should be activated at that given time.

Why wouldn't you just install the nsp of the update?

I hope there's a workaround for this since the events were a great thing to experience in New Leaf... Then again, maybe the nsp might be leaked out anyway.

And about using CFW, I personally prefer to use it, games in Chile are expensive in comparison to other countries and the system itself too. I saved money for a whole year to buy a Switch and proceeded to hack it in order to not buy games from all the stores who charge games thrice the price these actually are.

The first has leaked. It has updates and a few changes, but also the Easter event and items. AFAIK you can't access it without going online and accessing Nintendo's servers, which will put you in banland.

If it's not for piracy what's the point of having CFW?

I like my physical games, but I refuse to double dip to have them conveniently on the sd card. You won't find a game on my switch that I don't own physically also. I get that it's still technically piracy though.
