Unless you have an iron-clad will, or you haven't fully dived into PC gaming just yet, there's a very high chance that you've got a massive backlog of Steam games, sitting in your library, collecting virtual-dust. Valve is well-aware of the tragic fate that hundreds of games face, never to be noticed in most users' vast collections as they mindlessly scroll past, so they've designed a new feature to best pick what game you'll be in the mood for. The latest Steam Labs experiment, called "Play Next", hopes to use machine learning in order to pick out titles that players will want to try, based on previously played games and user preferences.

By checking out the new page for "Play Next", Steam users will be shown three titles from their library that are recommended for them to try, based off games that they've played a lot of in the past. Currently, as experimental Steam Labs features tend to be, this is a work-in-progress, and the algorithm Steam is using is still adapting and improving. So that begs the question, what games are you being recommended? Are they on point, or ridiculous?

Well, kind sir. You certainly have a very fine point that there is no rational reason for buying games without the intention of playing them or having them otherwise find a use, and as such correctly imply that persons doing this action are either addicted or delusional, both of which can be summarized under the label "idiot".

Okay, okay: a more serious answer...since it's much easier and faster to buy a game than to play through one and bundles are dirt cheap, things stack up fast. If I compare my PC gaming budget with, say, my girlfriend's clothing budget, then I'm barely visible on a chart. And yes: I like to maintain a collection, and cherish the idea that I'm helping out developers. To each their own, I guess.

I buy plenty of games and never play them. so many nes carts yet i only play the good ones like mario 3 and contra. Such is the life of a collector. I dont see how that makes me stupid.....

one thing is collecting physical media , another is collecting digital only media lol, i mean are you making a collection of digital titles that well are worth nothing? becuase you can display your physical collection, or sell them but steam games? what is the point of buying digital steam games you cant do anything with them besides play? if you dont play them, then you wasted money becuase they dont increse in value and you cant display them and cant be sold, and will decreease their value to afew cents after some years so everyone can get them so its not like your doing anything at all.

I used to call people on a landline and write paper letters. And, if you didn't get the letter in the mailbox or, god forbid, to the post office in time... Yosu couldn't send it until the next day. Or, until MONDAY, if it was on a Saturday.

Freaking entitled dumbwits. All the services suck, and are going to become progressively worse, because the owners don't owe you *anything*.

I've had problems with every single distribution platform, even GoG's galaxy client, EVEN MINICLIP. I have gone through countless operating system reinstalls over the years (especially post-2010) JUST to make digital distribution work. I've even put off playing a game I had purchased until the NEXT hardware generation, simply because my PC hardware was incompatible.

None of these companies owe you *anything*. Their survival is *no longer* dependent on you. Each service is going to get worse and worse, with user choice being drained further and further away, because no matter how much choice they take from you and how much control they exert over your actions and their curated products...

They have amassed enough capital and a library of digital ammunition they can use to crush *any* fledgeling competitor. And crush they will, because an economic competitor drains a corporations sustenance: cold, hard cash. This is consumer-consuming behavior, as well, because the consumer HAS the cash. The corporation NEEDS the cash.

Sorry, but they are all systemically consumer-consuming, and I have no choice but to use all of them to download and play games. Not only am I addicted to videogames, I don't have a DVD drive and selectively buying from different services during firesales is much more affordable than first-run-gaming.

Some developers still opt to sell direct-to-consumer. Please, support THAT. Central distribution services provide great usability features but will always be a monopolistic vehicle out of corporate survival instinct.

Just because they are bad and don't want to give you choice and often smush the little guy, though, doesn't mean they are bad. It's just basic human nature, and without sustenance they will starve, just like you.

Remember, corporations are people too!

I also have a huge backlogs on steam but it's because of the sales. I would most likely buy a game if it's on discount now rather than wait again probably months to get another discount of the same game.

Quite a few games in my Steam Library are stuff I got in a Humble Bundle when I was really just wanting one or two games in the set. For instance, I got most of the Batman: Arkham games in a Bundle that also included a majority of the F.E.A.R. series. I only really wanted the Batman games, I'm not very good at first-person shooters. Still, they're there, and I might as well keep them in case some day I decide I want to give them a try. I mean, I figure it's better to have something just in case the urge ever comes up instead of throw it out immediately and then eventually regret it.

So yeah, I've got a handful of games in my Steam Library that I really don't know much about. If I finish a game that I really enjoyed, and it turns out that one of my mystery games happens to be something similar, then why not? If you're going to make the recommendation to me and remind me that it's there, that might just be enough of a push to install it and give it a try. If I don't like it, I'll just delete it and get the space back on my PC anyways.
