I am considering switching over from SX OS to Atmosphere, but feeling a little uncomfortable with any possible inconveniences and/or issues I may encounter. What are the differences and similarities? As far as running games oldest to newest firmware, homebrew, and retroarch. What to watch out for that I don't have to worry about in SX OS? Is a NTFS/ex-Fat microSD OK to use? (I already know it is not recommended, but will it work?).

Is installation a breeze? I have experience, but just curious what is the process involved. Booting to recovery mode, hekate, etc.?

Super breeze

You buy it from a trusted website and you will get sent a key that you take to the official website to validate and get your download. You download the files off the official website and they are already pre-set with all the correct folders and you just drag that to your SD card. You also get your own sx payload that you use to launch the firmware.

Tinfoil HBG shop works perfectly with SX OS and they even recommended to use SX OS with it.

Retroarch and all that homebrew stuff works with SX OS

Team Xecuter has official forums and guides to installing everything as well if you need that.

ExFat works with SX OS and I have only ever used exfat and I have never had any corrupt issues with it.

Atmosphere works but I have never used it since I have SX OS.

I do own SX OS myself, but I have switched to Atmosphére-NX a few months ago due to a simple reason: My bluetooth audio USB-C dongle was causing the Switch to crash on SX OS (and it worked/works absolutely fine on Atmosphére-NX). It might have been fixed, but it was enough for me to switch the CFW.

Now, about Atmosphére, which I am now using: At first I had both of these CFWs installed, but then I realised I was using pretty much Atmosphére-NX only.
I do not miss a single feature from SX OS, everything I have used on SX OS is on Atmosphére (except the HDD support, but I have never personally used this). The installation was pretty simple - just copying over few files and launching the payload.

I am definitely not planning on returning to SX OS in the forseeable future. Feel free to ask me anything.

Well, lakka is a good option but flycast has very good compatibility in HOS atm already and it's a lot more convenient to use HOS RA since lakka still doesn't support a proper sleep, bluethooth joycons etc.. But for some very specific titles your best bet is lakka, that's true.

Except the missing xci loader, there is not much different between these two, that you need to keep in mind.
If you used nsps, keep in mind that atmosphere is not automatically blocking requests like sxos is doing.
They aren't blocking anything by default, since atmosphere is relatively save to use online, if you use it the way its intended, so just for homebrew and Rom hax and no nsp installation of any kind (even past one's on the.nand can cause a ban) .

You could also use both cfws easily on the same switch, and reboot to them from the homebrew Launcher, using the reboot to payload homebrews. This works because sxos is using quit a bit of atmosphere code (even if they don't give any credit for this, but that's another topic).

if you install nsps without any protection for sxos/dns90/interigo is the best way to be detected.

with xci there's no need to install or reinstall, just need to copy them to sd card

exFAT doesn't really mean anything as far as CFW goes. Homebrew like Retroarch will eventually corrupt exFAT but that happens the same on either CFW. So you can at least get started on atmosphere with exFAT.

Of course XCIs are the main reason you would want exFAT in the first place, and you won't be using those on atmosphere.

Hello, I can see that you know much about this topic, I have a problem, accidentally I updated my switch to 11.0.1, and my sxos is useless for now, do you reccomend me to install atmosphere?

You have two options:
1. Upload atmosphere
2. Wait for sx os update(there are rumors about incoming sx os update).

Definitely. As Adamos_22 wrote, you basically have two options, but you can always just install Atmosphére now and switch back to SX OS later without any data loss. Or you can simply have installed both and just push a different payload, whichever you want to boot up.
