Nintendo Switch Online NES and SNES games for February 2020 revealed

Nintendo is bringing fans some new-old classics for the first time of the year, in their February 2020 update for Nintendo Switch Online retro games. Four new games are slated to be added to the service on February 19th, including two NES games and two SNES. On the Nintendo Entertainment System side of things, Shadow of the Ninja and Eliminator Boat Duel will be the latest playable titles, while the Super Nintendo section will see Pop'n TwinBee and Smash Tennis joining their ranks.

Super NES™ Pop'n TwinBee - The sixth game in the TwinBee series, this vertically scrolling shooter takes place in a cute, poppy setting. This shooting game was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System™ in 1993. TwinBee and WinBee hear from a girl named Madoka that her great-grandfather, Dr. Mardock, has lost his wits, so they set off to return him to his normal self. This game doesn't offer multiple "lives," but the ship will not be destroyed when hit by enemies or their attacks until the life gauge reaches 0. Shoot bells found in the clouds to change their colors and receive various effects.

Smash Tennis - In Smash Tennis for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System™, the controls may be simple, but there's plenty of room for skill! Perform a strong shot with the A Button, a weak shot with the B Button, or a lob with the X Button. Easy, right? Well, with only those moves, you can develop all sorts of approaches, unlocking the deep strategies of tennis! See how you fair on the court in Exhibition mode, where you can select your character and court type freely, or in Tournament mode, where you must win set after set to progress through the tournament. All on one of eight court types—three basic and five special!

NES Shadow of the Ninja - Infiltrate Emperor Garuda's stronghold as you prowl through the shadows. It is the year AD 2029, and America is ruled under the dictatorship of Emperor Garuda. In the midst of disorder and oppression, two shadow warriors rise to the people’s cry for help. Choose to play as one of two ninja masters from the Iga clan—Hayate and Kaede—as they infiltrate enemy front lines in these action-packed stages. Master tactics of stealth as you acquire additional weapons and power-ups, defeating numerous foes until you reach the emperor himself. Overthrow the emperor and destroy his wicked empire from within, solo or with a friend!

Eliminator Boat Duel - In this powerboat racing game, get behind the wheel of one of the fastest machines on the water, and get ready to earn boatloads of in-game cash! Drivers earn thousands of dollars for competing, and you'll use your winnings to repair and upgrade your boat to really push your competitive edge to its maximum. Money is what keeps you afloat, and a little aggression can go a long way: sink an opponent to earn a cool $50,000 in-game reward to spend souping up your powerboat. Just try not to get sunk yourself, or you'll be swimming back to dry land. And try to keep the false starts to a minimum. Each time you jump the gun, you'll be slapped with a $2,000 in-game penalty, which is almost worse than going for a swim!

I've been waiting years and years to finally be able to play Eliminator Boat Duel on the go officially. Thanks so much Nintendo!
Play it while someone is driving you around on a speedboat it's much more exciting

And the super exciting big thrill of it all, there's a great game coming to the Nintendo Switch Online service! Better than Super Mario RPG, better than Super Metroid, even better than Star Fox! It's...

Wait for it...

POP'N TWINBEE!!!

Note the heavy sarcasm. Who the heck has even heard of these games?!?

Maybe it has to do with copyrighting and all other legal stuff. But in all honesty if you have a modded switch why worry about this at all?
True, but that doesn't mean I don't have Switch Online (I do) and don't purchase Switch games (I did). While I agree that licensing is possibly at play here, it's nothing that can't be solved when there's a will to do so.
Do you kno what happens when you hav to many choice of games to play - you end up never finishing any of them - giving a few a month is a good thing and those tht moan about ther not good enough then don't join the service as thers many out ther who wil like what random games pop up-and you get some people here hating on nintendo saying stuff like fk you nintendo because ther not offering ther personal faves of 25 year old games lol is pathetic
I'm sure you didn't buy the Switch with a burning desire of playing those sweet 8/16 bit era games. And I'm positively sure you won't spend more that a few minutes trying out a game that from the get go doesn't interest you in the least.

People complain about what they are able to complain about. And Nintendo, in this regard, could do so much better. Even releasing all of their first party games from both systems would be a better move. It's not like they don't have options.

.....Plenty of us [probably older members] have not only heard of, but really enjoyed Pop'n Twinbee, so that's a good addition. Maybe we'll get Rainbow Bell Adventures which was a decent platformer that the US didn't get?? Smash Tennis was also good, but kind of useless as it's bettered by Super Tennis really. More interesting is the games come from Konami and Namco - Konami in particular have an excellent library of SNES games that we might end up seeing - pity most fall either into Castlevania/Contra which they're selling themselves, then there's the licensed stuff they don't own now, like Turtles and Tiny Toons...... so about 2 games left then . No really, we might see the Goemon games, or the Parodius ones.. maybe even a bit of Sparkster.

Other games like ie Ocean titles - you've got to understand the company (and its property ...and many Ocean games were movie licenses which are now out of the question) are gone - acquiring the rights to publish these games as a 'freebies' part of on online subscription is never going to happen - we're only going to end up with games either owned by Nintendo themselves or the lower tier releases from 3rd parties who know they won't make any money from them otherwise (Nintendo's probably only giving them a pittance for each game after all) So don't expect to see Chrono Trigger up there anytime for example!

I love how mad people are because they don't realize that Nintendo is at the mercy of developer rights holdings. They were just the publisher for most of these games. You want more of the popular classics? Go haraign the development studios. Nintendo has nothing to do with this.

In Nintendo's defense, all the decent games left are either second- or third-party games. It's hard to license good games on a service as crappy as NSO.

I honestly thought they'd do something more interesting for april fool's..

It's February? They're actually calling this good enough?
Are you fucking kidding me? Eliminator Boat Duel is a fun game, but that doesn't really improve the complete fucking barren wasteland that is the NES and SNES NSO apps. Y'know what the Super Nintendo was famous for? Its RPGs. I'm not even a big RPG guy and I'm pissed there's not more RPGs here, and if it's for licensing reasons, be transparent about that. Don't just unload this pile of ass ham and say "Well, get excited about it 'cause we're not doin' anything else for another two months! Or more!" Is there really no pride left in this service? Do they just know people will buy it anyway 'cause they're strongarmed to, if they wanna use their Switches online?

Pop TwinBee is a lot of fun, but the rest is kinda.. eh.

Eliminator Boat Fuel while I never played it, it looks like the racing boat stages of Micro Machines from SEGA MD.

@K3Nv2 Snow Day is pretty fun. My only bitch would be the camera controls, when you move around, say down, you have to move the right stick left or right to get camera to turn and get your view, other than that I like it so far.

I just been playing offline, and they give you a few bots here n there on your team to help battle. I don't think it's as funny as the other games tho, more battle oriented than humor, which kinda sucks, but I'm still early in it

@BigOnYa, doesnt the game have a campaign mode?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.
