BioWare to rework on 'Anthem' with 'substantial reinvention'

In a blog post from yesterday, Casey Hudson, General Manager at BioWare, announced that the developers will rework on their sci-fi online shooter Anthem to "reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with meaningful rewards". He has also admitted that "there’s still more fundamental work to be done to bring out the full potential of the experience, and it will require a more substantial reinvention than an update or expansion."

Released on February 22, 2019 Anthem had a bleak reception, with a score of 61 on OpenCritic and 59 on Metacritic. Not even a year after its release, the developers are already working on giving the game a massive overhaul " to bring out the full potential of the experience". Current players don't have to worry about their game going on hold as Hudson writes that "we will continue to run the current version of Anthem, but move away from full seasons as the team works towards the future of Anthem. We’ll keep the game going with events, store refreshes, and revisiting past seasonal and cataclysm content – starting with our anniversary towards the end of the month".

Do you think that Anthem will be reborn to give a more compelling experience like with Final Fantasy XIV and No Man’s Sky?

As a rule of thumb, never blame developers for laziness unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're talking about. They're the ones who usually bust asses off trying to salvage a sinking project.

I'd recommend reading some articles on unfortunate development of Anthem - long story short, devs went into Anthem understaffed, overworked, undertrained for online-based games, burned out after Mass Effect, and suffocated by unrealistic demands on top of that, which is why the game ended up sucking. If anything, the only reason the game ended up being somewhat playable in the first place is because ridiculous effort was put into polishing whatever they could.

Whatever, my point still stands, EA is still to blame for the microtransaction bullshit, which ruins any game

EA didn't develop the game, they published and supervised it. I mean, they are guilty in the game being crap, but "laziness" is simply a poor choice of words and has nothing to do with the situation here.

Microtransactions are still shit, either have a game complete from launch or don't bother at all.

That's beside the point though. Bioware devs aren't the ones who call the shots, they just do their work. They can't "not bother" either, because that's how devs pay bills and feed their families.

Putting it into perspective, imagine working 12-14 hour crunch-shifts without weekends trying to salvage a doomed project ordered to your studio, only for someone to rant on how lazy and incompetent you were.

Any company that works its employees to the point of a mental breakdown or nervous breakdown is a company that can burn in hell for all I care. If a company and its CEO is so hellbent on making life a living hell for employees, it's a company not worth defending or working for.

Any company that does that employees can fuck off for all I care.

That's kinda my point. If it's the company that's to blame, then why are you insulting employees for being lazy?

Probably worth mentioning that Star Wars Battlefront 2 got fixed in 2019 according to players. Some are saying its better than the 2005 game now.
