Better wait for coming "WiiU environment". Problem is lacking i/o (long loading, whenever you wanna read a lot of data) because WiiU´s OS has to encrypt every file before it can be executed. That means, max. speed (reading/writing) is 1.5 mbytes/second in that regard...
WiiU environment is coming soon (approx 3 months) & will allow to run software/homebrew without WiiU´s crazy-slow encryption-system...This will make PSP-problems vanish...
So yeah. Wait until summer.it´s very hard work writing WiiU environment. You gotta be patient!

I had never heard that this was a major issue.

Yeah, "Maschell" is working on it. "WiiU homebrew environment" will be a tool, which allows development of own software without requiring a pc. You know, currently, development is hard, since the old tool only allows homebrew with encryption. Every time you change something in homebrew it has to be encrypted/decrypted again.
This is because old tool only allows to run hb with "user mode". So right now Maschell works to write a script which takes over control of iosu (arm-chip of WiiU) which unlocks "supervisor-mode".
Once you gain access to supervisor-mode you may run software with no encryption. That means everything will be easy running.Everything wil load at fast speed (e.g. your max speed of your sd-card/usb-memory).

Is there anywhere we can follow the progress for this?

PPSSPP on Wii U is in a decent state as it is. Yeah it doesn't run every game, and it struggles with others, but there are also a lot of games that run really well too.

I had no idea that something like this was in the works, that's awesome. Beyond easier and quicker running, does this mean that things that have posed problems being implemented in the past (such as proper Wii U media player) could more easily be implemented into the system?

You can read all stuff on Maschell´s blog.Or just search "WiiU homebrew environment". His blog allready has 4 parts & explains how it works, and how he allready progressed about 6 months ago. WiiU homebrew will pretty much unlock the WiiU by not being stuff to uese WiiU´s encryption-filesystem. No more limits.
But we gotta have patience.
And it´s not 100% clear when it´ll be ready.

It seems you either have reading comprehension problems or you're just completely insane.
That's like the logs of him designing his own homebrew environment from scratch because the one we use is kind of a mess, with different parts being developed by different people.
