PlayStation survey asks if players would enjoy having PS4 Remote Play on the Nintendo Switch

The PlayStation Vita was meant to be the king of Remote Play for PlayStation, but things never really turned out the way they hoped, with the Vita being known more for its miserable sales and its status as a "legacy system" a handful of years after its launch. We could get another chance at experiencing Remote Play on a handheld, though, if a recent PlayStation survey has anything to say about it. Reportedly, a Reddit user found a survey being given out by Sony, which asked PlayStation fans what features they'd like to see in the future, regarding Remote Play. Some of these questions asked if being able to play classic PS1 and PS2 titles through remote play would be appealing, if a mini DualShock 4 meant for on-the-go playing would be of interest, or if people would want to use Remote Play on other entertainment devices, such as the Apple TV, Android TV, or even the Nintendo Switch. Whether or not we see Sony actually implement any of these ideas is dubious, but it does seem like they're looking towards the future when it comes to PlayStation 4's Remote Play, or the service in general.

Given that Sony exited the handheld business for good after the 3DS blew the Vita away (75 million to 15 million), I can see why Sony is looking for a portable solution that involves using their console. And I suppose whatever fraction of Switch owners bothers to also own a superfluous Sony console might be interested in doing this.

I don't know. Why ? I don't use remote unless I can use PS4 to macOS if my friend wants to watch the smart tv instead. That would be fine but on tiny screen of Nintendo Switch ? I don't know.

Sony will refuse this, a homebrewer figures out how to do it, and sony and Nintendo will throw a massive legal shitting tantrum to have the person arrested, their social media purged and have any reference to it banned harder than nintendo banned am2r on twitch.

PS Now works on PC, so I suppose I could see them adding PS4 Remote Play to non-Sony devices. But adding it to the console of a competing company? They might no longer care about the Vita, but the Switch is also competing with the PS4. You would still have to own a PS4 so it kind of makes sense, just can't imagine Sony allowing it, considering what their attitude is on competing systems.
Except Nintendo. Yeah, PS4 remote play may increase Switch console sales (which they sell at a huge loss) but it will decrease software sales (which is where the profit is). Why would someone who's interested in PS4 remote play pay $60 for a Switch port like Witcher 3 when they can pay $15 for the PS4 version? While the PS4 remote video compression will take a toll it probably wouldn't be as bad as the downgrade in graphics that the native Switch version needed to do. This applies for a lot of other games too, like Skyrim, DOOM, and of the Final Fantasy's Crash and Spyro trilogies and it could even decrease potential future ports for games like Kingdom Hearts 3 or Spider-Man.

Sony certainly wins as PS4 remote play on Switch can revitalize lost gamers who have been too busy to sit in front of the TV for some solid gaming but who can now play in short bursts on the Switch. I know I'd play a few PS4 games I have that I haven't actually finished if I could play them on the Switch.
The #1 reason why people buy cross platform games on Switch instead of other platforms is for on the go handheld play. You wouldn't really be able to do that with Remote Play (no LTE and even if you tether to your phone, it would use up your data pretty quickly, plus latency is higher over LTE)
Yes. That and whatever MS calls their thing (Game Pass?) and I'll go buy a switch right now.
XBox Game Streaming. Game Pass isn't streaming based so it wouldn't work on the Switch.
Nothing stopping you from installing Android and the Steam Link app or Moonlight though, if your Switch is hackable.
Vita is a legacy handheld?
It STILL get games this year, WTF are you talking about?
But Vita has no games.

They sell at a huge loss, really? Lmfao! Nintendo are making a huge profit from hardware sales. Chipset is out dated, display is out dated, joycons are not made of quality parts etc. etc. It will not decrease software sales. Nintendo consoles are for exclusives. Nintendo hasn't been the go to console for non exclusive games since the GameCube.

But Vita has no games.
Only people that have never owned a Vita and biased Nintendo fanboys believe that.
Vita vs 3DS; discount the shovelware, and both systems libraries are comparable in terms of quantity of games... and while the Vita can't compete with the 3DS's NDS backwards compatability, it still has the digital PSP and PS1 library available for it.

Nintendo consoles are for exclusives. Nintendo hasn't been the go to console for non exclusive games since the GameCube.
Nintedo has NEVER been the go to console for non-exclusive games - there was always a more powerful rival system for the non-exclusive third party offerings.

If you call graphic novels and dating sims games, then please by all means go move to Japan to get your Vita fix. Literally nobody else cares about the Vita, and it shows.
That sort of generalization could be countered with a similar generalization about the 3DS library consisting only of virtual pets and fashion show sims and the Switch being the best system to play ports of other systems games on.
If you want to ignore the vast amount of great games on any system, that's fine, but borderline trolling because you've set up camp in an opposing fanbase is childish.

Fine, how about the fact that the Vita has a sealed, nonremovable battery versus the user replaceable unit in the 3ds system family? Or the availability of parts for that matter. I can with enough money and patience, buy enough parts to assemble a Nintendo switch from scratch. But i can't even find crucial parts to repair a playstation because Sony is famously litigious towards such sellers. Such attitude implies that they either have a vested interest in stifling long term usability, or they want to kill off the userbase one way or another.

Let's not also forget that most recently, I was able to find a 256gb sd card for $35 locally, while a vita 32gig still sells for over $100. Keeping a vita going makes no fiscal sense for what you get.

I can totally see it happen. It a situation where everyone wins.

I've thought Microspft might do this for the Xbone with the Switch for some time now given the relationship they seem to have together. So its a little funny to first hear any kind of actual rumblings on the matter for the PS4 and Switch instead.

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
You should update the 360 to newest dash before RGHing it yes. But not a big deal if you don't, you can install new dash/avatar updates after. It's just easier to do it auto online before, instead manual offline after.
