The Nintendo Switch has reached 52 million units sold, surpassing both the Xbox One and SNES

Switch-WSJ_10-04-18.jpg

Nintendo has a real winner on their hands with the Switch, as the console-handheld hybrid managed to reach new heights, as found in the company's latest financial results. During the holiday season, 10.81 million Nintendo Switch systems were sold, bringing the lifetime sales up to a whopping 52.48 million. That means the Nintendo Switch has now outsold the Super Nintendo, which back in its day, shifted 49.1 million units. The Switch has also surpassed the Xbox One, just barely beating out sales for Microsoft's console, in a much shorter timeframe. Where the Xbox One had 74 (released in 2013) months to get to 50 million sales, the Nintendo Switch (released in 2017) performed this feat in 34 months. It's onwards and upwards for Nintendo's latest hardware, which will need to sell another 10 million units to reach its next milestone: outselling the NES.

In the sales data, we also get to see new figures for games on the platform, most notably of which is Pokemon Sword and Shield, which have become the 5th most popular game on the Switch, selling 16.06 million copies since their release last November.

I am surprised XB1 managed to squeeze out 50 million sales, not at all surprised that Switch passed it up relatively quickly. I wonder, if Microsoft again has the worst UI and zero exclusives next gen, will those same 50 million customers stick around?

That's strange. I thought I read here constantly for about a month that the new Pokemon games were missing things and sucked big time. I guess I'll have to take comments from those people with a grain of salt from now on.

52 million consoles and I would probably not even run out of fingers on one hand before we run out of notable games anybody will care about in 10 years, possibly even with ports.

A game can still suck and sell a lot of copies.

Holy mother of hate, batman. It's FAST5191 at it again. So, I can name you a few games that will certainly be remembered 10 years from now (not in any particular order):

- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Super Mario Odyssey
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild
- Xenoblade Chronicles 2
- Astral Chain
- Fire Emblem Three Houses
- Tetris 99 (Yeah!)
- Pokémon Sword/Shield (Like it or not)

You could even include those, maybe:
- Luigi's Mansion 3
- Super Mario Maker 2
- Splatoon 2
- Octopath Traveler

You must have a lot of fingers per hand.

I have a switch that is modded and a switch lite. I just wanted to put my 2 cents in the equation. You cant compare something until you literally had all 3 gen consoles to see all of its flaws. I have all the gen consoles. Honestly just because it sells good doesn't make it a good product. The switch honestly is a glorified handheld which you can dock to the TV. Does it have good games absolutely however a good percentage of the games are remasters.

I'm not going to play the better console game because evreyone would have thier own tastes so I'm only going to talk about the capablilites. Nintendo is really far behind when it comes to online and content and even in thier hardware. Also they never really have sales I mean why is Mario kart 8 still $50-$60 and thats a 3 year old game. (Also it is a remake)

Most games that are ported to the switch are lower graphic compared to thier competitors. Hell even some games doesnt even get a switch port due to the legal/complex issues of developing it on it. The switch is like an iphone it may be good in numbers doesn't mean it's great. (I have a iphone and an android)

Despite evreything I said the switch is still an enjoyable system but if you put it next to diffrent consoles due to performance and capablities it is really behind. I personally think the system is just average. It's good for a little kid or a family but most of the games on it 9/10 times you already played it on previous consoles.

I love Xbox I had Sony products for 14 years and never played an Xbox ever. I haven't played my PS4 in 5 months ever since I bought my Xbox One. PS4 is the better console in hardware and games yes but they fail at online and also PS now. Gamepass is winning and dominating online. I also have EA access. Most of Xbox Exclusives are free and let's not forget again about Gamepass you have Jump Force , DMC 5 , GTA V , Gears 5, Outer Worlds , Horizon 4 and much more. You can't get all that awesomeness on PS NOW. The PS plus is just a joke which lead me into getting Xbox in the first place.

Again I'm not a fanboy because I have PS4 and Xbox but if you look at content Xbox is winning in the online and online cloud gaming department. Sony have better game deals and sales. Sony doesn't care about thier customers people bitch and complain monthly of the garbage they put out on PS plus. Only thing I don't like about Xbox is that based on popularity they may delist a good game. But 9/10 times I already have it on my PS4

It's very surprising given what it is.

Just think though THIS could very easily have been the Vita, ot it's replacement, if Sony weren't their own worst enemy.

To be fair I did say remembered there rather than valued as good games, even for the time. Many of those could well be remembered for being a drastic turning point for those franchises, assuming they were even good in the first place (xenoblade yawnicles? seriously?).

Why cant gbatemp just post sales of the switch without having to go all fanboy and compare it to another system selling not as well.

We dont care, console sales mean fuck all.

Doesnt change the fact nintendo still failed to improve and get better third party support and games.

Yea we have these very old ports, bravo, id rather have uad the hardware back then rather than gimicks and have had the option to play these games when it was new.

Not 10+years later.
yeah i remenber you saying the nintendo swtch would be a huge flop when it released 2 years ago lol, you know people love the portability and allows people to play games they wouldnt have time otherwise because they can take the switch with them to use on ocasions where you are free, like me i only used my switch docked like 3 times and played in handheld 99% of the times, getting games even if some are ports to be playable anywhere is insane not everyone has the time to be home in front of their tv for alot of hours, but one can only find like 45 min break somewhere and play some games.

Well you need to admit the switch didnt flop at all and people loved the entire concept of portability, heck if the switch 2 has atleast between ps4 and ps4 pro style graphics even if its insanely inferior to ps5/xbsx just thinking on getting games with those graphics on the go is insane, we came a long way from 3ds portable graphics to switch its amazing how stuff can be made on a tiny table screen.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

"This console is so bad because it won't sell more than 150Million units (which is more than the population of many countries)"
That's the logic behind people saying it's shit because it won't outsell the ps2
lol my country only has 10 million and so people lol so yeaah even the wiiu outsold the population of my country :P

of course the switch cant have ps4/xbox levele of graphics ... your comparing a tiny console wich is only a tad heaveir than some phones to a full fledge stationary console that has 10 times the space for cpu,gpu and venting space... its like you want a a micro car to have the engine power of a hummer.

would it be possible for the switch to be on par with ps4/xboxone? probably if you used extremely high priced new tech and made it bulkier and heavier and then instead of costing 300 it would cost 1500$... and you know what? it would flop big time because no one would buy it even tough it was on par...

You need to make compromises to make stuff portable. You cant make a portable device have same graphics as a stationary device 10 times bigger and make it consumer firendly price , that isnt a thing.

Heh good luck outselling ps2.

Yes, the PS2 - the system with the same standard controller layout as modern consoles, the frontrunner of the generation which introduced many games and franchises so good they're being ported over to modern systems on a consistent basis, that functioned as a cheaper DVD player at a time before Blu-Ray, and again, had new games coming out on a regular basis that weren't always yearly multiplayer-only games coming out left and right.

I still await a time like that for the industry again.

lol back then online multiplayers wasnt really a thing on consoles, i mean it existed but it was niche 99% of the games didnt have anything online, now everyone demands online multiplayer on every game, seriously even cyberpunk 2077 is getting online because of fan demand, nowadays all people want is online multiplayer.

im a single player offline guy so yeah i dont care at all for those tbh.

were familys especially mums playing games like wii tennis and wii fit-no back in the 80 and 90s a mum never held a nintendo controller
I have to bring this up though. While my parents did have atari and still do. They did pick up the nes when I was a kid so they could play duck hunt. So casual gaming did exist. Mom wasnt good at it but she did play it. Dad on the other hand would literally make bets with us as to who could get the highest score...Until we figured out that shooting a white wall made you hit the duck every time lol

Online increases the replay value of the game once you finish the story you can still play it. Also you have more of a competitive gameplay. I only play Mario Kart 8 online since it's better

That's why I said the switch was a glorified handheld. But on the graphics side it is the same level as a vita. I like my switch considering I do have a modded one with the Pokemon Light Version I use it when I'm traveling or on my break at work. I'm just saying its average at best. It would be great if they included GBC/GBA/N64/Gamecube/Wii Online service lime they do with the NES/SNES But they will never do that because they just going to remaster it and make you pay full price for it hehe. If I can do all that on my modded switch I definitely know its possible to do.

Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.
