Just as they did last year, Sony will not be making an appearance at this year's E3. Despite the imminent launch of the PlayStation 5 at the end of 2020, Sony believes that, "[they] do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year". This will be the first E3 in which Sony doesn't show off their new console, with the reveal of all previous PlayStation systems having taken place during the event, in years prior.

We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.

Rather than focus on E3, Sony plans on marketing the PS5 at consumer shows, where fans can be more directly involved, rather than E3, which has always leaned more towards the gaming industry itself. This means that PlayStation games will not be revealed at E3, nor will any first party PlayStation content be available to demo on the show floor in Los Angeles this summer.

Nowadays a news travels faster and reaches more people on twiter than e3, sure back then there wasnt much awareness but today a simple reveal online goes very very far, farther than e3 really.

They didn't have a new console coming out last year to promote, so it's a very different scenario.

How you are doing at the time of e3 is largely irrelevant, it's a showcase for what you have coming up over the next year or two. It's like Sony either don't have confidence in showing that, don't want Microsoft to see it, or they haven't decided on the final PS5 specification and aren't ready to commit to a specific performance level. I'm sure we'll find out.

But if it's because "the vision of the show isn't right" then either they are lying or have really shitty marketing department now and neither of those things are good news.

It has put many developers out of business because a large portion of their userbase, was the PS4 installbase. Since the censorship, many Japanese devs had to close up shop, or move to a different platform where they were making a significant amount less, and had to lay off many a dev.
