Nintendo of America has filed a trademark for Mario & Luigi series

nRKXRt7.png

Time will tell if there's still a future for any future Mario & Luigi RPG games, as Nintendo has filed for a trademark for the series. In 2019, the developer of the Mario & Luigi franchise, AlphaDream, shut its doors after going bankrupt due to the poor performance of their titles. The trademark document was signed last week by Nintendo of America through an agency in Argentina, and covers products related to the Mario & Luigi series, such as game carts, memory cards, accessories, and software.

Whether or not this means anything significant is yet to be seen, of course, as Nintendo itself hasn't made any announcements about future games in the series. And, it's important to note that while Nintendo is going to the effort of renewing the trademark, it could just be to protect their IP, or for any remaining sales of last year's Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey for the Nintendo 3DS. Especially as this is a trademark relating to Nintendo's American branch, rather than from Japan.

You can see the trademark for yourself, below, discovered originally by Dutch website Let's Go Digital.

I think this is worth the discussion and is slightly notable...so a news post for it exists. But I've come to learn that these trademarks very, very, very rarely mean anything. Nintendo can trademark Golden Sun every year until the cows come home, but we're all still waiting for a new entry.

Hmm...I was going to say what @Chary and @Bladexdsl already said: they're probably just doing it just so some dipsh** can't claim the IP and then exercise that to claim things when nintendo wants to release a Mario title at some point (which...is pretty likely, all things concerned ;) ).

the thing is that you'll get disappointed.
they make a new m&l game? it will be bad and disappointing.
they do nothing? you get disappointed at them doing nothing.

Trademarks of existing main names, logos and whatnot are usually just renewals -- every company, Nintendo especially, realises the value of an established franchise. Also while new entries might not come in a franchise they might still be sold as emulated/compilation titles and for various purposes they count as new launches.
Trademarks also have an area they apply to. While making a new game (or even emulating one) is not a trivial act it costs next to nothing to make a new tshirt or sign over some art to a soap company to put on the box, and either counts as free money or extra PR, so that is presumably why the other areas are there.
While you can keep a trademark forever (unlike patents and theoretically at least copyright) you do still have to renew it every so often, and also defend its use but that is a different discussion.

Trademarks of new subtitles associated with the games, new logos and new whole titles are a different matter. It still does not mean a new game is coming ($600 or so per class, and probably a few more times that for a lawyer if you didn't have an IP/trademark specialist in house, is nothing in the grand scheme of things) and such things can be grabbed if a project is gathering even the smallest amount of steam.

So, since AlphaDream is out of the picture now, I wonder what company Nintendo would pick to make a new Mario & Luigi game. I mean, it's got to happen at some point. Didn't Miyamoto say that Paper Mario got changed into what it is now because he feels that the M&L series fills in the need for a semi-traditional RPG series, and that the classic Paper Mario formula was abandoned because it was redundant? So, that would mean that we'd either get a new M&L game to justify continuing the "modern" Paper Mario games, or we'll get a new Paper Mario game with the classic formula again.

If you think a Nintendo game is bad tel us what one and why
I'm not gonna fall for that.
if I do then you are gonna respond with "but that's a good game because I liked it" or something along the lines. liking something doesn't make it good.
the thing is we'll both waste our time arguing over something pointless.
