Rumor: Further reports claim that a new Switch model will launch in 2020

gear_switch-lite.jpg

We're only a few days into the New Year, and now that the holiday season and Nintendo Switch Lite launch window is over, news outlets are back to claiming that the release of yet another Nintendo Switch hardware revision is imminent. This time, it's not just the Wall Street Journal, but also a Taiwanese news site called Digitimes, who are claiming that a new Switch model will be out by mid-2020. These claims come from sources within the related hardware industry, who state that Nintendo will be ramping up production for a new Switch sometime before the end of Q1 2020. From there, this theorized Switch would release around the middle of this year, and would feature a new CPU.

Nintendo launched Switch Lite with friendlier pricing in late September and signifcant increaes in its overall Swtich console sales in the three-month period ended September 30, 2019. Now the Japanese vendor is reportedly planning to launch a new Switch model in mid-2020, qwith volume production for the new device beginning in first-quarter of this year. In China, chipmakers have been keen on developing high-performance AI chips and high-end CPUs, which will prompt suppliers to expand their ABF substrate production capacity to meet their needs. In Taiwan, startup team BeVi, is ready to showcase at CES 2020 its CarePLUS, a 360-degree AI-based environment recognition system for eldercare.

Nintendo new Switch to enter mass production in 1Q20: Nintendo is reportedly planning to release in mid-2020 a new model of Switch, which will begin volume production at the end of first-quarter 2020, according to sources from the related upstream supply chain.

These claims should always be taken with a grain of salt, but it does pose a question: With PlayStation and Xbox poised to release their powerful next-generation hardware for the holiday 2020 season, will Nintendo follow suit, in a bid to extend the Nintendo Switch's lifecycle with a more powerful system? We're already seen them do a hardware refresh with the new red box Nintendo Switch, and the Switch Lite. What do you think about this longstanding rumor?

I still find it fascinating that people believe that Nintendo is still competing in the console wars. With the Switch, Nintendo gracefully side stepped the console wars and can continue to do so if they continue down this path.

Not buying another Switch until I see a model with significantly improved specs - the Lite just wasn't for me and an improvement in TDP/battery life is not enough to convince me to switch (ha!) from my Day 1 daily driver to a new console. If it is a Switch Pro of some kind, it will be a perfect secondary system, but other than that my 2020 wishlist is still dominated by the PS5 and the Series X.

Same for me. Nintendo is going to be my last chance even for next Switch or brand new next console against PS5 and XBOX Series X because Nintendo Switch proves to be underpowered again this time and no new AAA 3rd parties at all. Frustration and disappointment. Last chance and if no 3rd party supports for brand new AAA games like PS5 and XBOX Series X then Nintendo is DONE for me!!! I will play Nintendo emulators in the future instead!:angry::glare:

LOL.. Nah.. I only enjoyed Zelda games, Mario (action games like Odyssey, New Super Mario Bros, No party games and go karts at all). Thats only my things so I will be fine with emulator for the next system if 3rd party of brand new AAA games doesn't happened. Dont want to waste my money.

I am owner of PS3, PS4 and soon P5. :) A long time Sony and Nintendo (Be warned, Nintendo.. your last chance)

Aww...

All the good jokes on this name and news are taken. :P

Ahem...on a serious reply: I think it's too close to the switch lite to revise hardware already. Aside, as mentioned, perhaps a stationary unit. Wouldn't be much cheaper than the handheld, but it not requiring a touchscreen or connections for the controllers might help a bit.

But my crystal ball says they'll release some prepainted/colored switches, and probably showcase a few new bundles as well (read: you'll be able to get a metroid-skinned switch when metroid releases and a Zelda one with BotW 2(1) ).

I don't think they'll react much to sony and microsoft's new consoles. Perhaps a price cut at best...

(1): or similar games...I have no idea on ninty's release schedule.

Why not, 7nm can make huge impact, the revision make double play time by using 12nm, move to 7nm, upgrade screen to fullHD

It's either a Switch Pro with proper hardware, capable of running Monster Hunter World, PUBG and Doom at 60 FPS or it's a no buy from me. Tired of not having games I want due to the miserable processing power of yester-year that my current Switch has to offer.

Listen to your costumers Nintendo. We have the crappy, weak Switch. Now give us the powerful one that actually competes.

I don't think it would be such a terrible idea. I think realistically it should still be dockable and portable if there is a hardware revision. I know room-scale VR would most likely take a lot of power and advanced display tech with very high resolution though. I can't really tell if Nintendo is pushing for people to have multiple switches between the Lite and OG versions.

I've been using samsung galaxy phones' dex mode recently to hook up to any TV in my house (I can confirm that the switch original dock and the insignia switch dock work with S9 and S10 series phones to activate dex mode) and run steam link with pretty great success locally on 5GHz wi-fi (across the internet is very poor but I only have about a 20mbps down/up connection at home).

On that, I'd like to imagine Big N coming out with a graphically powerful base station that it could stream gameplay to portable models. You wouldn't have to manage DRM, or download the same game multiple times for each piece of hardware you own (or have to buy more SD cards for that matter), while having powerful hardware render the games and your handheld only having to deal with processing inputs and the video stream, and hopefully improving battery life.

It would be even better if you could do that all through an android app as long as I'm dreaming big here.

Edited a line break in there

yeah home to portable streaming would be a good idea , especially if we could get it to work with modified consoles
but now that i read that this new switch is rumored to have a magnesium allow body i am pretty sure it is not a home only system

"I can't really tell if Nintendo is pushing for people to have multiple switches between the Lite and OG versions."

well it could go like this

casuals: switch lite only

intermediates : OG switch

pros: home switch only

pros who want to game on the go too : home switch and switch lite

i wonder if the magnesium alloy will allow fanless cooling and act as a heatsink or if it will have an x2 and use both a fan and the magnesium body to dissipate heat

yeah

but now i am conflicted
i have a 180$ walfart credit
use it to buy a switch lite when TX goes on sale or save it and wait and see what the new switch is

there's always PC

Well...yes. The point of the Switch is that I can have that on the TV and on the go, anytime, anywhere. I don't mind paying $500 if that's what I get.

I honestly don't get it. We have the technology. We've had it for ages. Increase the price, make a beast of a gaming handheld.

The closest I could get to that with a PC would be a heavy laptop, which is far from ergonomic and also does everything else other than gaming (something we do not require).

I mean if the Switch Pro doesn't give us any of this, what's the point? I'll just stick with the old model. They gave us the Switch Lite, which doesn't add anything, in fact, it takes away features the old Switch had to offer.

Yes the switch lite should of been boycotted to tell nintendo all we want is a bit of power - I just don't get how a company can release an inferior machine after the original - a handheld today should be doing 1080p minimum

I'll be honest, the situation is much better than on the Wii U. Bethesda has given the Switch wonderful support so far with their key IP's like TES, Wolfenstein and Doom, and I feel that other publishers will warm up to it now that it's overtaken the Xbox in sheer units volume. There is the problem of the spec, but push comes to shove you can work around that by greatly reducing the level of detail and framerate, like CDP has with The Witcher 3. It's certainly not what AAA games call for in terms of spec and it could've been much better on an AMD Embedded platform, particularly the Ryzens that were out at the time (just look at the Udoo Bolt for reference), but for a first attempt at a hybrid it's not half bad, bar the terrible design choices in regards to the charge port and joycon rails. I kind of like mine, but it does exemplify the Weaktendo mindset in design.

As we have seen time and time again, ninty is not really trying to compete with Sony and Microsoft. Ninty does not really care if their console is underpowered (most of the time). You are buing it for the experience and mostly for the games.
And sales tell you the same story. People who buy nintendo devices don't really care about their power compared to the games and experience.
But, then again, I wouldn't mind a bit more power (especially when docked).
