Hacking Question Playing lower firmware games on a higher firmware?

I'm running 9.1.0 and I'm trying to get an older version of a game to run. I tried using goldleaf but it wouldn't install it. I tried using nsc builder to let it run on 9.1.0 but after installing it it'll keep telling me to update it still.

The switch firmware has a list built into it of what games have updates available at the time the firmware update came out. The game you are trying to use must have had an update available at the time 9.1.0 came out. You are always gonna get that update prompt

Alright, I'm sure this will work but not sure how safe this will be... I found out the fw I need to be on for the game to work but how safe will downgrading from 9.1.0 to 3.0.1 be? I'm currently using sxos to test this out and move stuff over. IDK if I can stay on the current version of sxos while being on 3.0.1 or get one of the other two cfw to use. I'm also worried about fuse burning if I go down that far and then upgrade again.

I have never downgraded my Switch myself, but the process seems to be complicated. In your case, it seems easier to me at least to find the update and manually installing it. You could use this database to figure out which version of the game is the latest and install with your .NSP installer of choice

I don't think that is true.
I am running games like smash Bros and others on the base game with no updates on my 9.1.0 and I don't get any messages that it needs to update

It doesn't make sense though.
I mean, what if you bought a game on a cart and had no internet access, you wouldn't be able to play the game.
Also, all my base games, which I know have alot of updates work without any issues.
I could understand if you are connected to the internet and it checked for updates, and after that made you update the game in order to play, but I can't see it coded in the firmware as there is still alot of people in the world with limited internet access and so on.

Well, to be able to update the firmware requires internet access through, so if you're able to update the firmware, you should also be able to update whichever game you are playing. That said, I have also read what AmandaRose is saying in other threads, so I think what she is saying is correct

If you're already using NSC Builder...why don't you use NSC builder's multi file option to join the most recent update to the NSP that you're trying to use? It's easy....it does it all for you.

Install devmenu and 'reset required version' on that game.
That way, it won't prompt you to install the game update.

EDIT: The reason that it knows there is an update is because:
1. You updated it before via nsp installation or other means and you deleted the update
2. Or the switch connected to the internet and detected game updates on the server

Since it knows that there exists an update, then it will require you to install that update before playing.

So to clear all history of updates, devmenu is needed to 'reset required version'

Unless the save file is created using the updated version of the game, you will be able to run it flawlessly.

Personally, I use a modified version of tinfoil to reset req'd vers. I also use tinfoil for updates.....maybe try googling underprivileged shop.....there's a world waiting for you, you know?

If you really don't want to, maybe delete the ticket and reinstall everything from the game?

Because that's not what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to get an older version meant for 3.0.1 to play on 9.1.0 so I don't want to install any of the latest updates. Even getting the base game and the update for 3.0.1 that I need, using nsc builder to merge them, will still make my switch ask me to download its most recent update.

Sure no problem. Just make sure that the save file is compatible with the version of the game.

No problem Update us here so that others may see it too.
Also, install devmenu nsp with goldleaf. I had problems installing it via tinfoil/sx installer

You're right, I didn't consider that scenario - - it would certainly suck if games you've bought previously stopped working because you bought a new game that updated your system
