You can base it either on nostalgia or on what you actually play the most, it's all subjective anyway.

Tomb Raider is probably my all-time favorite. I started with the first game on PS1 the year it was released and have enjoyed most of the games since, though the classic series is by far my favorite. I get that the gameplay and character had to change eventually, but there's something about the originals that just hits the right spot for me. I don't think any other games have ever filled me with as much wonder, except for...

Phantasy Star. The classic series, though. I never really got into PSO or any of the later games, though I've tried many times. Honestly I think I was just too heartbroken at the end of the original series to give them a chance. PS IV is basically the perfect sci-fi RPG. 25 years after finishing it for the first time, I still miss the characters. That's usually the sign of a good story, isn't it?

Super Mario (3D series). I love the 2D games too but I really like the collect-a-thon format. I even liked the wiimote balancing levels (this should have been a full game) and the dreaded purple coins levels in Galaxy.

What are your favorites? List as many as you like.

I started phantasy star iv on the genesis collection on the switch. I'm stuck at where to find someone's pet. I don't know if that quest is time sensitive or what. I think I know where I'm supposed to go if not for that blasted side quest. lol

There is at least one side quest that's missable. I'm not sure if it's that one specifically but it could be. Although, some of them aren't possible to complete until later on. There are a few islands you need a certain vehicle to reach, for example.

I've been thinking of replaying the original Phantasy Star series with the fan re-translations. IIRC there's one for every game, including the Sega Games Can PSII prequel missions.

Rune Factory.

It weird that I had never play the first game but I still love the series. Rune Factory 2 was the first game that I actually enjoy playing (technically it should be Link to the Past but it doesn't have enough waifu and I got bore after get the master sword) so it's mostly nostalgia but the series as whole is probably the pinnacle of farming RPG game.

Oh man, off the top of my head:

Spyro (The OG trilogy, plus the GBA games which were alright) < This series I vividly remember getting into after I got my first bee sting as a kid, my dad took me to Gamestop to pick up a game to keep my mind off being stung a few times and I ended up choosing a duo pack of Spyro 1 and 2.

SoulsBorne < I also remember trying Demon's Souls a yearish or so after it came out, thought the game was hot garbage. Didn't really get into the series until Dark Souls 1 released on PC, and since then I've been a massive fan of the series.

Halo < I have very found memories of playing 1 and 2 as a kid with my brothers and a couple friends over the years on our OG Xbox. We ended up getting a couple green Halo Editions one, one of which I still have NIB in storage somewhere. Excellent series, spent many hours playing this.

The Witcher < Another series where I didn't really like the first game, but the second one hooked me enough that I went back and played through it again, found a new love of a series. Wound up reading all the books, which I now own physical copies of, and the new Netflix series is really good so that's nice.

Pokemon (Gen 1-3), along with Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Stadium (never really played much of the other Stadium games) < Gen 1-3 were my main games I've played growing up, and my love for those three gens still makes me play whatever new trash they release now. Hasn't really been a good Pokemon game since Emerald (except for HG/SS, best remakes ) IMO.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (1-3) < Another game I played a lot as a kid with my brothers. I remember one time my older bro entered a code for infinite grind on one of the games on Dreamcast and we left it for like 2 days to see how high the points would go, which was fun lol.

Dragon Warrior (mainly 1&2 on the GBC in terms of nostalgia though). < My dad used to own DW 1&2 on the GBC, I remember he'd play it every now and again and eventually he let me have a go. Really great port of the games, I haven't played too many Dragon Quest games since (I loved 11 though) but I would like to finish them at some point.

Call of Duty (1-blops, mainly) < Another series my brothers and I played a lot of, we used to go to midnight launches for Modern Warfare and MW2 and such. Always fun to come back to these after a long time

Battlefield (1942-Bad Company 2) < This is probably the first FPS that I really got into on my own, I ended up putting a ton of hours into 1942 and Bad Company 2. Used to be rank 50 for the longest time (on PS3, which is odd ) until the server reset my stats and I just kinda stopped playing :(

Legend of Zelda (mainly SNES and GBC ones) < I used to watch my older bro play through LTTP, great game that I wound up enjoying myself. Eventually got all the GBC games and played through those as well. The 3D games I also played quite a bit, but they never really stuck with me as much as LTTP and LA DX and Seasons/Ages has.

Donkey Kong Country < I remember going to my neighbors house to play this one, she used to have quite a few SNES games and this was one of the first ones that I saw that wasn't familiar from our own library of games. I find DKC 2 to be the better game than 1, but 1 still holds a special place from playing it so often as a kid.

And I'm sure there are more, if I really thought about it. Most of them are based off nostalgia, really, being series I've played growing up that just sort of stuck with me until now (even if I stopped liking games in the series after a certain point). I still play nearly everything in this list at least once a year, if I have the time or inclination to. Hell, I just started playing Halo and the Souls series again just this week to "start off" the new year, even though there are half a dozen newer titles I've wanted to play since then

Favorite of all time for me is BY FAR Monster Hunter, been playing MH since literally day 1 MH1 came out in Japan and still do to this day, having played literally every game in the series with only exception the mobile phone ones! Unfortunately World and Iceborne have REALLY ruined what made MH unique and Frontier got shut down so I can't play any new classic MH games anymore, forcing me to go back and replay the older ones often. Overall MH is my most played game series too, having about 19000 hours total across all games in the past 15 and a half years that it's been out (YES, that's bit over TWO FULL YEARS OF PLAYTIME and I'm only 24, no life:rofl2:)...

Second favorite is Kingdom Hearts, just love everything about it and how it can take some of THE lamest or more annoying Disney characters and make them into a badass!:P Also it has amazing gameplay and great story, with most entries having different mechanics to change things up a little (eg: Forms, Shotlocks, Data panels, customization panels, etc.) AND some of the best music you'll find in videogames all thanks to Shimomura and Tokyo's Philharmonic Orchastra!

For third I'd put Final Fantasy, although just the old ones, so not the whole series, just all before VII (utter crap), with favorite being VI! From VII and on it just became a generic AF JRPG with shit mechanics, while all previous entries had something unique to them (I = customizable party, interesting magic mechanics so you'd never be too OP and simple but fun and well-thought-out linear story/progression, II = you don't have levels but instead raise your stats by doing tasks according to how you battle so MP goes up the more magic you use, defense the more you get hit, etc., great characters and nice story, III = semi-customizable team, lovely characters, great music and some unique mechanics such as camera control, IV = classic, brings more focus to summons and is the most balanced FF game to date with interesting story and just the most suitable JRPG for people to get into the genre with the difficulty being much lower than in other entries, V = super customizable main, great bosses and just fun overall, VI = THE best JRPG of all time, very interesting main character and fairly well-written support characters, THE single best villain in a game of all time who literally turns into a god by the end and goes back to linear progression like in IV and I which is something I love about JRPGs). VII and on on the other hand do NOTHING unique, flood you with side-missions and shit (eg: breeding Chocobos) and only like ONE redeeming character each game, not worth playing a boring game just for that... The ONLY FF games I've liked after VI are side games and specifically Dissidia Duodecim (absolutely amazing game), Final Fantasy Type-0 (customizable AF with like 100 characters to pick from each with their own unique gamplay/weapons/mechanics/quirks, amazing story and is the single game that pushes the PSP to the absolute limit, AKA the portable console besides Vita with SUCH good graphics that despite being at only 480x272p you can hardly notice a difference even if you compare it to a PC's average 720p after upscale) and Crisis Core (FFVII only has 4 good characters, Zack, Aerith, Angeal and Sephiroth, so instead of playing the overrated trash that is VII, this one is MUCH better)!

Hmmm... When does something become a 'series '?

Anyhow... Judge for yourself :

* cool, serve, delicious : the second one is more a sandbox than an rpg, but has far more recipes and challenges. Better graphics too

*unreal series... Though epic's like Microsoft in that their naming sucks only every other game they make is great, and the other half is terrible. I mean :
-unreal : awesome
-unreal 2: bland at best, plain terrible if I'm honest
-unreal tournament (ut99): awesome
-ut2003: meh and weird at best
-UT2004 : my favorite game ever (incidentally : not just 'improves on' ut2003 but in fact contains everything as well)
-UT3: this one's meh again (it's like when you're favorite child goes goth or something)
-unreal tournament (reboot) : potential for awesome, but fortnite is too damnit popular

*rocksmith : Erm... Two entries here, and the latter improves on everything but the tracks. So... Is this a series?

*Mario franchise : yeah... I obviously don't like all the spin offs (sorry hotel Mario), but their 2d games just print money for me (3d as are good as well for other reasons)

*Zelda series : while I prefer the isometric (handheld) ones, I'm just a sucker for them. Even the worst I play (phantom hourglass thus far) is still a good game

Just Dance. There are 17 on the Wii, not counting the unofficial one from last year that gave us the songs/dances that hadn't made it to Wii yet. And Just Dance 2020 just became the last official physical game of the 7th Generation, allowing the Wii to outlive not only the X360 and PS3 in that regard, but the PSVita, 3DS, and Wii U as well.

Every year since 2009 wii've had at least one JD title. 2020 will fiil wiird wiithout iit.

I really want to add Metroid and Castlevania to my list but there are a lot of games in those series that I didn't really like. The Metroidvania-style games are all great but I didn't like either series' transition into 3D.

I will add classic Doom to my list though. It never gets old. My first Doom was on the Jaguar and I've still never gotten bored of it. I don't even need mouselook or all the other amenities in the modern ports.

yeah, 3d is where some series started to go downhill. they've been trying to remedy that with sonic, but there are a lot of bad games in that series. castlevania is that way too, but I did love the lords of shadow games. I'm mostly referring to what they put on the n64. wow, that's just wow.

Damn...how could I forget this one:

C&C series. Though like with unreal, westwood went hit and miss if you ask me. At least when EA took over, it was consistent. Unfortunately for me, it was a consistent miss...

Original C&C (later redubbed Tiberian dawn): First RTS game that really hooked me. I still love it, even though it has aged badly.
Red alert: it's...okay. Sure, I really liked it (and adored the soundtrack), but all this time I was like "but...I wanna play C&C!".
Tiberian dawn: this was a total disappointment to me. The story shifted from being addressed as a player to being a witness to someone else. A shame, because it had some innovative stuff. Still: I couldn't get rid of this fast enough
Red alert 2 (and yuri's revenge): favorite RTS ever (especially with expansion).
Generals: erm...I sort of missed this. I still have no idea if this is supposed to be part of the franchise or not (it's hard to say if the tiberian part was part of red alert or not. This realistic approach was like a different game)
C&C 3: this was...okay-ish. Fancy and colorful, but otherwise meh
Red alert 3: I was lukewarm to this (I had come to learn EA being EA at this time), and that was what it was. Rather than interesting interactions and hard counters, it was just a clown parade of units. Would've been much better if it didn't start to go in the direction of blizzard with all sorts of abilities per unit (the exact appeal to me was the "here are your units. you have at most one action with each. have fun!").
<some other C&C game>: I forgot how it was called, but before release some PR guy said it wouldn't have base building. I stopped following it.

Noone has said bioshock - shame on you all
Not much of a series if the second is at best a clone of the first and the third has a style that's so much the opposite of the previous that if you slapped another name of it, nobody would think anything of it (heh...even system shock resembles bioshock more than bioshock infinite).
Don't get me wrong: I liked infinite. But it's IMHO overhyped (unlike bioshock).
