I have a Wii (PAL/EUR) on 4.2 with probably very outdated versions of Homebrew Loader/Channel; USB GX; cIOS etc.

I want to get the system up to spec. However, I only found guides on hacking the Wii from scratch. Mine has Priiloader on, and other stuff already. Do I have to update to 4.3 and start fresh using one of the guides on https://wii.guide/ ?

If not, can anyone give me some advice on how to get everything up to spec homebrew wise? My intention is to run stuff like Retroarch and other homebrew, as well as run games installed on HDD.

I already have a WBFS formatted hard drive. I heard this is no longer a good idea. Is this true? If yes, do I have to rip every game back out and reformat to FAT 32 etc?

I suggest backing up your data before using wbfs2fat, it has corrupted data on the odd occasion. And if you're backing it up anyway, then it might just be faster to format and copy back instead of using wbfs2fat.

Hello,
I used wbfs2fat, and I never had a problem

If he corrupted data, is it that games were badly copied to the hard drive or the games were bad?

It could just be a random glitch. I've never used wbfs2fat, I was about to at one point until I read reports of corrupted data. Certainly it's much more likely to work as advertised, but I think it's worth mentioning there's a chance it could corrupt data (no idea what the chance of that is... 1%? 10%? Certainly less than 50%)

Unlikely as it may sound, most of these games I own and I would have to re-rip individually from discs. It is a prospect I don't hope for.

I'll update how it went!

I wouldn't bother updating the System Menu. That has a high chance of fucking something up. Just update the HBC and all your apps and you'll be good to go. I actually downgraded my Wii to 4.2 a few years back so that it's compatible with more older stuff if I want it.

ModMii will suggest staying on your current firmware if it is already at 4.1 or higher. And if lower than 4.1 modmii will recommend updating to 4.1 only. Of course users have the ability to choose 4.1,4.2 or 4.3 if they want to override the recommended firmware

Can I ask if there is an optimal setup in terms of CFWs and where to install them?

I am checking this: https://gbatemp.net/threads/modmii-for-windows-official-support-topic.207126/

In particular this:
4.png

and I remember that in the past different cIOS had different strengths/weaknesses or abilities to play certain titles that others do not. So what is the most optimal configuration for the highest compatibility with the least amount of fuss?

Okay, I have a new question.

I tried this and while things went mostly OK, I could not install cIOS249[57]-d2x-v8-final.wad and cIOS250[56]-d2x-v8-final.wad as they were produced by ModMii. MMM simply throws an error and won't install them. I can't uninstall the previous one and re-install the new ones either. It simply refuses to change these on my system. I understand that cIOS250 is crucial for perfect game compatibility, so can anyone help?

Secondly, I had Priiloader pre-installed. It was an ancient version (0.3?) but I updated it to the latest version 0.82. Do I need to keep an SD in order to have Priiloader on, or can I move its files over to the HDD? Also, is Priiloader even useful anymore, or should I uninstall it or use something else (perhaps there is something better now?)

Thirdly, and finally, my system version was using a patched (I think) IOS36. After following the ModMii procedure, my system version was botched and Priiloader would refuse to load system menus. I had to switch to an alternate cIOS in order to run system menus. Is that OK? Is there an optimal (c)IOS that I should be booting from into the System menus?

The firmware is still 4.2 E as it was previously.

Many thanks!

1. What is the error? If it's -1022, then press Minus on your WiiMote first while hovering over the WAD, then when you're done, just press A on the WAD.

2. Pretty sure keep them on the SD, also yea keep Priiloader.

3. Why don't you launch with the vanilla IOS? Isn't it like IOS61 or IOS70?

Make sure you have loaded ios236 (or similar cios) prior to installing wads and 249 and 250 should install for u.

After configuring priiloader to your liking (including SM hacks) you can remove your sd card and it will still work. It's still relevant for brick protection, customizing boot options, and system menu hacks.

How exactly was your system version botched? Priiloader is uninstalled after installing a new system menu btw, so I'm assuming you reinstalled it? If you are on SM 4.2 it uses IOS70 to run the system menu, you should use this.

Can you post a Syscheck or elaborate on what exactly u did with modmii? Did u follow a wizard or just download files and manually try to do things?

1. Minus uninstalls the previous right? If so, then it won't let me do that for some reason. I will try again in a few minutes and report back.

2. So I will have to keep both an SD and my HDD on at all times, right? Which files should stay on the SD and which on the HDD?

3. I am not sure why. It was set-up like that ages ago. I believe there was once a system corruption issue and after it was fixed I stayed on this particular IOS. I will switch to 61 or 70 and report back. Is there an optimal one?

The story is quite long and I don't remember much because it happened around 2010 or so. But I remember the system was bricked after doing some IOS or cIOS installation and recovering it involved some magic voodoo that I don't quite remember anymore. Part of it was getting Priiloader to boot from a different IOS. The system was updated to 4.2 and Priiloader was re-installed. For some reason, I had configured my System to use this old IOS, but since both of you confirm that 70 is the one to be on, I will try that and report back.

I will upload the Syscheck log shortly, but I followed the instructions and did a recommended update by using my own Syscheck log. I followed the output guide by Modmii, but I would call the process manual. I knew my system had lots of custom stuff and alterations in the past from standard hack routines, so I thought using the Syscheck.log method would provide the safest options?
