Humble Monthly is evolving into Humble Choice, comes with a major price increase and varying tiers

It's been exactly four years since Humble Bundle introduced its Humble Monthly Bundle. For $12 a month, one could automatically subscribe, or pick specific months to receive each Humble Bundle as it went live every four weeks, offering players keys for a variety of different games, ranging from unknown indies, to major AAA releases. At the start of each given month, a handful of titles from the bundle would be revealed, leaving the rest shrouded in mystery, until one actually purchased the bundle and it unlocked midway through the month. Now, things are beginning to change, as Humble has announced that Humble Monthly is about to undergo a major revision, changing into a new service called Humble Choice.

Subscribers to Humble Choice will be able to choose from multiple tiers, such as Lite, which costs $4.99 a month ($44.99/yr), and gives you simple access to the Humble Trove, Basic, which is $14.99 ($134.99/yr) and offers 3 games a month, along with access to the Humble Trove, and a 10% discount to the Humble Store. Lastly, there's the Premium tier, which costs a whopping $19.99 a month ($179.99/yr), which gives you a choice of 9 different games on a monthly basis.

For those that are still subscribed to Humble Monthly, you'll be able to keep your current $12/mo price, and you'll be transferred into the "classic" tier, which offers 10 games a month, more than any other active tier. However, the moment you cancel your subscription, you'll lose your classic status, and will be forced into choosing one of the new three tiers if you ever wish to resubscribe.

What are the benefits of a Classic plan?

Through the Classic plan, you will retain the best deal of all moving forward with Humble Choice. This includes the following:

  • $12 a month price point from Humble Monthly (or your current multi-month pricing).
  • 10 curated games to keep every month (compared to 9 from the Premium plan).
  • Full access to the Humble Trove.
  • Up to a 20% Humble Store discount.
  • Unlimited access to published Humble Originals and betas.
How do I regain access to the Classic plan once it is lost?

Unfortunately, there is no going back to a Classic plan once Humble Choice has launched. If you choose to unsubscribe you will receive a prompt informing you that your Classic plan will not be available going forward if you decide to resubscribe. You will lose your Classic status, and upon resubscribing will have to choose between the Lite, Basic, and Premium plans.

The new Humble Choice will give users a set of 10 games each month, with basic and premium tiers being allowed to keep 3 or 9 of any titles from the lineup, respectively. According to Humble itself, during a livestream where the company detailed some of the new changes, monthly game selections will still range from assorted indies and AAA titles. Humble Choice will go into effect before the end of this year, meaning there's only a short amount of time left, if you wish to secure the classic monthly plan, or want to cancel your subscription entirely.

I miss the really old humble days of opting to pay one penny for a bundle of games, and it came with some free sarcastic comments about how cheap you are.

I like the idea of what they're going for. The main turn-off for me with the monthly bundle is that you don't know what most of the games are ahead of time, and most of them don't interest me or I already own them. What's left is sometimes worth the $12, but other times not - and as a result, not worth the gamble for me. I bought a couple months (like the current one with Crash Bandicoot + Spyro) simply because the early unlock games were worth the price, regardless of what else was there.

Looking back and seeing how each month there's only 1-3 games I would really care for, picking 3/10 would be pretty much the same deal for me - with the obvious advantage of seeing all 10 games right away. The only problem is... price. The "value" proposition technically has gone down. But I think in a service like this, just like with PS+ and Xbox Games With Gold, it really comes down to the games. If they can consistently bring in good games, there's plenty of people that will find it worthwhile.

It's easy to knock Humble Bundle for the price increase and reducing the number of games you keep in the same blow, but with the option to be grand-fathered in to Classic at the same $12, Humble Bundle is really one of the good guys. They offer PC gamers tremendous bang-for-your-buck, and help out charity along the way.

I was literally just about to start subscribing to Humble Monthly. Like, this week. Good thing it's not too late just yet.

The question would be if they can deliver a higher value with higher prices, it's not like they had more than three games worth paying for any month before...

If they target last years AAA games they are in direct competition with services like Gamepass which also pickup those games and they will also have problems
with some games going epic exclusive now - maybe this move is to move higher up in the food chain to get releases earlier and also be able to negotiate with epic.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
