I read somewhere that Scart cables for PAL and NTSC are hooked-up differently so which one do I use for a PAL wii to properly switch to 60hz/NTSC on my fat Sony Trinitron? I will probably rewire it anyway if the shielding is inadequate but it would be nice to have one working out of the box.

That applies to the SNES, all later consoles (whether the Wii/U or the ones using the SNES connector = cube and N64) have the same cables world wide...

...which is different from saying they all support a scart cable in rgb mode - NTSC consoles (whether American or Japanese) do not officially support RGB at all; for the 64/GC* this actually means no hardware support, for the Wii/U the hardware is the same the world over but you need to change the (video) region to PAL, to switch the "unshifted"& video output from composite+s-video to composite+rgb

* strictly speaking you can get rgb out of any DOL-001 by modding the YPbPr cables, but...

& the shifted output (by shorting 2 pins in the connector) is YPbPr the world over

I just want to output 60hz/NTSC out of the PAL wii playing Gamecube games via Nintendont so that the TV is switched to 60hz/NTSC, and the reason for that is that it just looks better and the flickering in 50hz is terrible. I'm asking because the local seller (I really only need the connector but like I said, it would be nice if it worked out of the box) sells two different cables, one which he says only "works for NTSC consoles" and the other he says "only works when playing PAL games. In NTSC mode it will produce a red tint". I don't know the reason for the inconsistency in the wording.

If the cables are wired identical it wouldn't matter which one I bought.

I have a component cable which works fine but since getting a CRT I'm converting all my component cables for all consoles (wii, PS2 and original Xbox) to RGB Scart. If all wii RGB Scart cables are wired the same it wouldn't matter and I could just chop that one up and just wire it up like this;

I do however want to avoid this red-tint business if possible.

"only works when playing PAL games. In NTSC mode it will produce a red tint"
This is the only correct description for any Wii/U RGB cable

The only possible interpretations of "RGB cable for NTSC consoles only" are 1- it has an active converter from S-video or composite; 2- it's a SNES cable; 3 but corollary of 2- seller doesn't know their products ;)

The best option (if forcing PAL60 is unacceptable because of incompatibility reasons) is to use a YPbPr cable with an external RGB converter (which is going to be an homemade product - https://www.analog.com/en/design-ce...collections/ypbpr-to-rgb-video-converter.html - since your display probably won't support 480p, in which case you could have used a commercial YPbPr to VGA converter)

Or for GC games, to play them on an actual PAL cube :)

My PAL Cube is currently working as a Gameboy device only and I got a wii to play Gamecube games just because I can't find any mini-DVD discs anywhere.

Wait, are you saying this can't be done without external devices? It's either incompatibility or red screen?

This is highly disappointing :(

Buy a kit with a chip, sd gecko, and Swiss disc (advertisement: http://www.gbatrump.net/gamecube/gamecube-en.html), it's not as compatible as Nintendont (https://www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.php?title=Swiss/Compatibility_List) but more than acceptable :)

Yep, from the GC (hardware) onwards (and with even more limitations for the N64), all Nintendo consoles output composite and rgb in PAL mode, and composite + s-video in NTSC mode - it's just that with the Wii/U PAL or NTSC is a software option, while on the SNES/N64/GC actual different chips are used

If composite or s-video are sufficient - you may be able, depending a lot on the specific model of your display (I can personally speak for the KV-M2180), to enable NTSC decoding with less than 5 € of parts and a change in service mode!

I have that and it isn't acceptable.

That's weird because my PAL Cube seem to output 480i/NTSC/60Hz over RGB to my CRT's just fine without any problems, both Gamecube games and Gameboy games. At least according to SWISS.

NTSC/60Hz over RGB
Aha, everyone gets confused by this sooner or later :D

NTSC strictly speaking is a research group which invented the a color encoding of the same name (PAL, SECAM, RGB, YPbPr are other ones, and only one of them is being used at a given time), and color encodings are not directly linked to resolution/timings (except by common use, but South America has the uncommon uses :P)

However, the NTSC group also invented the 525 lines per frame/480 visible lines/60Hz/30FPS system, which confusingly but technically correctly also gets called NTSC (while you can't call 50Hz timings "PAL")

All Gamecubes support 50 and 60Hz, but depending on their official region they only support (PAL + RGB) or NTSC color (plus, if it's a DOL-001, the semiproprietary digital output which an active converter can turn into RGB, YPbPr, or HDMI regardless of what the console itself supports) :)

On GameCube, the analog AV out port has separate pins for composite, S-Video, and RGB. This is a holdover from SNES. The main issue is NTSC titles disable RGB and enable S-Video. (Swiss intercepts this and keeps RGB enabled.)

On Wii, S-Video and RGB share the same pins. Specifically, S-Video's Y pin (luminance) is the same pin as RGB's R pin (red), which is why you get a red image if you use an RGB SCART cable with an NTSC title.

It *should* be possible to force a PAL60 video mode to allow use of a Wii RGB SCART cable with NTSC games. Some USB loaders might have an option for this. On the other hand, YPbPr (component) is a better choice, mostly because it supports 480p.

If it's of any help, I just grabbed my cheapo Aliexpress RGB Scart cable and plugged it on my PAL (from Spain, if that's of any help) Wii.

Instead of booting in 480P it did so in 480i, which is normal. I loaded Nintendont and booted up my US backup of Crazy Taxi, and it works perfectly, the only difference is the game doesn't ask you if you want to use Progressive Scan. The image quality is inferior compared to component + Prog. Scan, but it works (although my Scart cable is pretty mediocre and gives me those ugly diagonal lines).

Mind you, I'm using an LCD TV and not a CRT. I tried other 4 or so games, all of them worked with no issue and no need to force anything. I'd try to dig up my old CRT but I don't have my arm in good enough shape yet to pick up that monster.
