Despite superficial similarities to a taco it is a contained meat (or theoretically meat) item in a leavened wheat dough roll. Tacos in either soft tortilla or hard shell forms does not traditionally come from leavened bread, and moreover said things traditionally would likely not have had any wheat in them.

Its advent is unlikely to be derived from a taco as much as utility. While the sandwich itself likely post dates knowledge of corn in europe we do also have pita breads to consider in this and these go back many thousands of years.

To that end sandwich.

Isn't that what I said? Just with a lot less detail and not quite as eloquently :rofl2:

The leavened part was the more important one from where I sit. Wheat tortillas exist (and form a significant part of my diet -- nothing is rarely ever as tasty as said same in a wrap... I did indeed eat cottage pie in a wrap the other day) and can still form fine tacos but leavened breads are a different matter entirely.

Edit. I realise I also neglected to do further research last time.

They say 18th century as possible origin and that is hazy, which even if there is some parallel invention going on it might even post date the classic sandwich ( http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodsandwiches.html ), never mind the pita bread stuff.

Thats not what I meant silly boy lol. I meant taco shells are made from corn so a hotdog must be a sandwich as its in bread :ha:
But that would mean cornbread sandwiches are tacos.

You have to be careful with cornbread as it means different things in different places. That said it too is usually leavened if we are sticking with my definition, albeit with baking powder rather than yeast.
