Pokemon Sword and Shield sell 1.3 million copies in Japan, biggest debut for a Switch title

Pokemon-Sword-and-Shield-Pokedex-1206065.jpg

Pokemon Sword and Shield, like most mainline Pokemon games, have had a very successful first few days of release. The pair of games managed to shift 1,364,544 copies within three days after launch in their home country of Japan, dethroning Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's opening week sales record for the Nintendo Switch. This number includes only physical copies, as Media Create, who tracks Japanese game sales, does not count digital sales. Nintendo Switch hardware saw a boost in sales, as well, reaching 180,000 units sold during the launch window for Sword and Shield.

I also don't get the Gigadynamax ... so they can not evolve ... how do you get something like a Charizard when your Charmanda can not evolve if you get a GigaDynamax version of it ? I have traded the Evoli with one npc and was wondering why it wouldn't accept any evolution stone till I noticed it had this gigadynamax sign. (can you actually see if a mon can giga or not before catching or do I need to catch thousands of the same mon to finaly get a giga version ?)
Erm.. You don't understand what the GigaDynamax mechanic is and how it works but are still able to complain about it? Nice one.

The Eevee and Pikachu you receive for having played their respective "Let's Go ..." games will not be able to evolve because they are special Pokemon that can also GigaDynamax.
Giga actually changes the appearance of the respective Pokemon instead of just making growing in size. Also they have a special move that no other Pokemon will be able to use.
If you get a Pokemon that can GigaDynamax (has the symbol next to their name shown) they will usually only be able to Giga in their last evo form. Pikachu&Eevee are special because they are event Pokemon.

Hope you understood everything, if you have any more questions feel free to ask ;)

Despite all the complaints about dexit and last gen graphics - the consensus seems to be it's a fun game - which is really all that matters. The sales reflect that.

They bought it before knowing it's fun? We all know the sales are because it was made out to be a full-on Pokémon game.

On topic: Damn sheeple mindlessly buying a shitty game.
I liked it too.
I guess I just wasn't down seeing Samus as an emotionless block of stone like everyone else was

I think I will skip this generation. I kinda hoped, that they will deliver something completely different for their first pkmn hd experience (dont count the letsgo series). I wished gameplaywise and open world setting something like xenoblade but in the pkmn universe. But then I remembered, that it's gamefreak we're takling about, so all we got is a 3ds lowpolygon experience with that outdated gameplay. What a let down

Honestly, I'm sick of open world games. There are rarely good open world games, granted, some are really good, but most of them aren't. Zelda BoTW is probably the only current gen open world game where the story didn't lose out due to being an open world.

I know what you mean, as I have the same opinon. Not everything should be open world, but I think for a pkmn game it's perfect. Imagine climbing up a mountain, visit hidden caves, swimming under water to search for some rare pkmn...i dont know, just got some images in my head, that I would rly enjoy...make pkmn maybe a little bit more adult

I don't think it needs to be open world, it just needs more focus on the story.
So far I'm enjoying Sword more than I thought I would.

I really don't think that's fair being of genre there is good and bad to open world games.

its like saying RPG mechanics are bad because I played a bad RPG.
don't get me wrong I do think the UbiSoft formula of climb towers etc. has gotten stagnant but that doesn't mean a good game can't have those mechanics.

I like the freedom that open world games give me, you can have linear paths in an open world game it just won't penalize you if you go off the beaten path that has nothing to do with gameplay as someone who at this point would consider open world games with RPG mechanics as my favourite genre I think we've had a severe lack of the because of the abuse by people like UbiSoft a few years ago.

I'm sick of the lack of open world games, but moreover I'm sick of the lack of experimentation by these companies putting them out

As an American player, I loved Other M. So, I don't know what problems they had with it. Maybe they just need to git gud.
Metroid: Other M stands to he the worst rated entry in the franchise, only followed by the most unnecessary entry in the franchise being Federation force. Which is a shame, because Federation force had some of the best FPS controls I've ever used on a game on a handheld system.

Other M's problem (among many) was that it tried to have its cake and eat it, too. It tried to say it was a Metroid 3.5 (between Super, and Fusion) and act like an origins story. The manga did the origins story earlier and better. So did Zero Mission as a remake of the first game.

Other M is to the Metroid timeline the way Prometheus and Alien Covenant are trying to shoehorn into the Alien/s timeline; in that said entries break continuity hard once examined under any context or scrutiny against the other, established entries in the franchise. The only way for Other M to be canonical, is if it's following a timeline where Samus failed to rescue the animals at the end of Super, because those animals are instrumental to the events of Fusion. And if we take that consideration, there are still things that leave gaping, unanswered plot holes. And of course the contempt that Team Ninja has for female characters. And the horrendous voice work for Samus herself. Or the arbitrary locking of, and awkward timing of when abilities and upgrades are unlocked. Compared to literally every other highly acclaimed entdy in thr series, Other M is a bastardization.

Back on topic to Pokemon, the problem with Sword and Shield is, among many others, data mining proves that Game Freak is blatantly lying to its english speaking fan base, and outright omitting details to its Japanese players. About the only thing worse in recent memory that compares, is the unending fiasco that is Bethesda's Fallout 76. Allowing Sword and Shield to get away with this success, is like allowing that same level of gross incompetence.

yeah
your sick of them and think they are more bad than good.

i feel the opposite, im not sick of them and feel they are more good than bad.

i do agree BOTW was a good open-world game but i dont know if i'd agree best of the generation. (maybe)

also i don't agree with the premise "the story didn't lose out due to being an open world."

i think whether a game's story is good or bad is completely independent from it being a open-world or not.

i cannot think of a example where the open-world significantly changes the story of a game to the point where if it was linear would have been good but because it was open it is bad.

fact is there are good and bad games storywise for any genre and openworld-ness doesn't seem to be a contributing factor.

feel free to provide examples if you want to change my mind

Gamefreak was really proud of their work, too. Watching videos, reading reviews that are just nitpicky. This is not what a $60 game should be. Especially when it's the first entry from a well-established development team on newer hardware. I was standing at Walmart a couple nights ago debating whether to pick up Sword for the discouted price of $50... But no.. This would have to be a gift for me to consider playing it. I wanted to give Gamefreak the benefit of the doubt. However, with the long streak of broken and poor releases within the last 5 years from other (would-be) reputable devs? No. This is unacceptable, and can't be defended. If you enjoy it, great. That doesn't mean there's not a problem.

Hmm. To be honest, I thought people's complaints were against the gameplay. To be honest, I did not even know about the manga until now. And, how are the animals instrumental to the events of Fusion? And, what does the animals being rescued, have to do with the Other M being canon or not?

In short, the animals that would escape Zebes in Super are the same animals you find in the BSL station where Fusion takes place. But the events going on in Other M don't make sense
unless those animals never made it. but it also means that Adam's self-sacrifice in Other M also doesn't make any sense, either.

I think a lot of you should realize that a great number of the sales are by parents/family for children. Children generally don't care about how technical or refined or even good a game is. If it's the next big thing, and "the other kids want/have it, I want it too!"

Don't mind me, just scrolling through here looking at the new posts, while listening to Viva La Vida by Coldplay, which is ironic since a line in the chorus is "Be my mirror, my sword and shield"

Swoshi?

"Can I have some swoshi, please?"

Pokemon Sw/Sh is great, but it could have been so much better
That is true. And if Game Freak actually starts to care again, we might get better games next gen. If not then the entire Pokémon franchise will probably start to die. I dunno.

There's always that one kid in school who has both versions

right? Feels so inconsistent and incomplete in some aspects like some backgrounds. When thinking they would not include the whole Pokédex i expected more on the gameplay/graphics side.
