He fucked up bigtime by posting a video of him cheating in an online game which he makes money from. He even went as far as using a throwaway account and different computer to avoid his behaviour being linked to him, but was unwise enough to post the video on his YouTube account. With this said, a lifetime ban on him is excessively harsh. One year would have been more appropriate.

You might want to set the scene a bit further as you can reasonably assume many here would not know what game you are talking about (I know you have the title card of the video mention in it in small text but eh, also I tried to click on the video but that was one of the most grating voices I have ever heard), who the person in question is, what sort of actions were taken (while I will probably have minimal sympathy either way (their game, their rules, their discretion and all that) there are differences in such things -- not all cheats confer an advantage). Or if you prefer write such that someone in 10 or 20 years will have an idea about what you speak.

That said I am more curious about this lifetime ban is harsh stuff. I have met it a few times now when the likes of social media sites, forums and games have been discussed. Back when I were a lad... there was no internet really but when it did finally arrive it was fairly normal. You even had it in real life -- my dad got banned as a teenager from some pubs (for life) and when he was in his late 30s/early 40s (as in quite possibly for 20 years to have passed) he went to go back in the but the landlord recognised him and told him to get lost. In the case of games for the most part "buy another key" was the default position as few bothered to do much more detection than that but I think it was Overwatch (really early days there. https://www.gamesradar.com/uk/overwatch-cheaters-are-being-given-lifetime-bans-that-actually-work/ ) when it truly got expanded to not only keys but players themselves (it seemingly fingerprinting the hardware used, quite well at that if some of those are to be believed) and some people raised an eyebrow.

its not like he can't play some other game.
This, indeed. The amount of video games is staggering. It's not like he misses something.

Oh, wait... He makes money off of it. That changes things a bit : make that twice a lifetime ban.
I... Honestly don't get what he was thinking. I have a job that makes me money. You really think I'll risk losing it by doing, let alone recording and posting, something illegal in regards to that? No freaking way. I'll lose that job,and not 'just for a year' either.

(note : things are obviously different if it would be for testing purposes... But you've got to get an agreement with the developer - epic in this case - prior to attempt it)

eh, fortnite. but he cheated, nobody's above the law unlike what ninja says should be so. it sets a bad example and teaches kids "oh you can cheat without getting banned? cool let me do that too"

he should stay banned.

"oh but he makes money off of it" yeah playing something else can also earn you money too, it's not like fortnite is the only game he can play that has any smidge of a competitive scene

I have no sympathy for folks that ruin other people's fun in online games.
Even more so if they were making money from doing it.

In my opinion the permanent ban was fully warranted and the high publicity of it will hopefully ward off anyone else thinking to try it.

didn't they not ban a team for cheating? they just gave them a suspension? I'm honestly for the lifetime ban, i can't stand cheating if its multiplayer (not counting 007 big head mode on the good ole n64). Cheating in single player is not a problem since its only your adventure D: but damn, breaking the rules and being surprised that you got banned for it is just sad.

Don't know the youtuber and don't play Fortnite so can't really tell how big a deal it is but cheating in an online game you get paid for and then putting that footage online is really stupid so I guess it's deserved.

I know I'm in a minority here but I still think a lifetime ban is excessive.

I don't like Epic Games or Fortnite and this guy was promoting them. I had never heard of this guy before he got banned. Given that most people support the lifetime ban and there are plenty of other Fortnite streamers out there, Epic Games has no business reason to reduce or overturn it. He's fucked.

He had it all, a nice house with his gamer friends, a high-end PC, a large fanbase and a very high income. All at the age of 17. And now his world has collapsed.

He still can play Fortnite. He can get a new IP address, make a throwaway account, modify his PC to evade device fingerprinting and reformat it. But if he reveals his identity, he will get another ban*. He can't play with his friends, get exalted by his fans or live off the game anymore. His glory days are over.

His behaviour was incredibly silly and he did believe he was above consequence. While he verbally said you should not use hacks, his voice tonality while using them glorified their use. His apology video was so cringeworthy I couldn't watch it. He's painted a thick black mark on his reputation which he can never completely clean off.

His most loyal fans and mother still defend him but I'm inclined to disregard what they say because they are excessively biased. Epic Games was right to humble him; he did need to learn his lesson, but he's already learnt it. He's still a child from both a psychological and legal perspective**. So I think a lifetime ban is excessive.

Getting screwed over by things you did and wish you could undo is an unfortunate reality of life. There are still plenty of options available to him like get into another game or get a real job. If he invests and spends wisely, he might be able to live off the money he already has. Hopefully he will be able to move on over the years and find something else he can appreciate in life.

* He might be able to change his identity. He can go to a dodgy country, get plastic surgery, bribe government officials to give him a fake ID and wait a few years for his voice to change. This is very risky and expensive. I recommend against it.

** I am well aware that Epic Games is a private company and part of their terms and conditions includes waiving your right to sue.

How was he "making money"? Was he taking part in tournaments for prize money? If so he's got off lightly with just a life-time ban and not being tried in a court of law for fraud.

A long post, but you're not really explaining your why, except in one sentence I disagree with : he didn't 'had' it all... He still has nearly everything. That large house, gaming of and support and earned money aren't going anywhere. Heck... He 's even making money off his apology video (gotta love the YouTube popularity contest;)). The only question is how many subscribers he's going to lose in this incident, and that isn't even up to epic. If he streams his friends playing, visiting events or do basically anything that his fans want aside playing fortnite, then he'll be fine on that front.

The creepy thing is that 'making drama' isn't even a bad move, save perhaps in the long run. Many here have never heard of the guy until now, so by crying on YouTube he basically gets himself the equivalent of a raise in a normal job (yeah, I'm cynic. But that doesn't make me wrong:glare:).

To my understanding, he participated in tournaments but did not cheat. He uploaded a video to YouTube of him cheating in a regular game and was given a lifetime ban for it.

I spoke too soon about losing his home, we still don't know what will happen. I don't have any hard numbers, but I suspect that most of his fans have unsubscribed from him now. He still has the money he already earned, but wont make any more playing Fortnite. He's blacklisted from Fortnite related events. He still can stream his friends playing.

It is true that he has gotten a lot of attention getting banned. I sure wouldn't want such a cringeworthy video of me on YouTube. Time will tell if he takes advantage of this. Hiring a public relations firm to do the thinking for him while his own mind is in a mess is well within his financial means.

I still think that his life as he knows it is over, but I really didn't think of things from your angle. We shall see what happens.

It's not like the cut off his hands. He'll find other stuff to do, and learn from his mistakes (hopefully).

Hello.:)

The Question was:

What do you think of Jarvis' lifetime ban?

I think:

Who cares about such Nonsens ?
Do we have no other worries than such "People" to give additional attention ?
Does the world "end" from that ? Does it eliminate wars and famine? Poverty?

That almost sounds like he was being charged for a crime ........ Criminals do very different things ....

imbecility....

No, I did not watch the stupid video

Sorry, but I haven't watched the video. Is there more at stake than him having trouble accepting the fact that he can't play fortnite anymore?

From what I gather, his income is fine (Christ... He has made more money than me, and I'm twice his age). His fans will probably abandon him at one point (the fate of most internet celebrities), but it's not like his life is over at this point.
