It's already shown by Grezzo that ports are possible, (see Luigi's Mansion 3DS) but what about direct emulation? It'd likely run badly without REALLY good optimization, but I don't think it's completely impossible. But I'm not an expert on the technology and processing and that sort of thing. It may have to be exclusive to the New 3DS if such an emulator existed.
Even if GameCube emulation IS impossible, we at least know that ports are not. I mainly just want to play Super Mario Sunshine on my 3DS. Maybe some unofficial ports will pop around. Who knows.
Apologies in post if it's totally absolutely impossible and I just made myself look like an absolute clown lol.
The New 3DS struggles to play N64 Games, How the hell is it gonna run GameCube Games?

I mean it may not natively play N64 games, yet I'm still able to use my 3DS to play Mario 64, Star Fox 64, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Diddy Kong Racing, and Rayman 2.
Are you refering to complete remakes or a actual interpretter to the n64 code? There are huge differences between the two.

Hence why I said it can't natively run N64 games, but that I can still play some select N64 games on the 3DS. Keep in mind, that the post I was responding to, simply stated: "struggles implies it runs N64 at all," And while sure, it doesn't emulate the N64, but it still plays a small collection of N64 titles all the same.

Except. Ummmmm. You're not playing the N64 versions of any of those on your 3DS.

Didn't say you were, derp.

Except you're still stating that it still plays a small collection of N64 titles. No. It does not. PERIOD. It plays a small collection of N64 remakes. Derp.

Ok dude, the guy in the original post was talking about how the 3DS can play Luigi's Mansion and was making the incorrect assumption from that that Gamecube games can be played. I was simply following his same strain of logic in saying well if that's a Gamecube game on the 3DS, then it has it's share of N64 games on the system as well. Hell it has a few Wii and Wii U games at that. Doesn't mean it's natively emulating the original games at all, just that the titles originally available on those systems have been made to be playable on the 3DS as well. If you really want to contest that point, then by all means, keep at it, but I know you know what I've been getting at. At least I hope you do.

Yes but are these ones nintendo remade? Or simply roms stuck on the 3ds. The first option is that ninty made it so all the code is read from the 3ds language not from n64 code. Most of what listed is like that. Yes they Were n64 titles. But no. They arent running n64 code anymore.

Obviously I'm talking about the remakes and ports. Clearly I'm not alluding to some mysterious N64 emulator for the 3DS that plays a very small selection of games lol. I'd welcome it, but we all know such a thing isn't going to happen for the handheld.

So I'm the one that's in the wrong because of what YOU said in your own post? I'm mistaken because YOU chose poor wording? I understand your need now to explain yourself away, but hey buddy. I'm just going on what YOU stated. See how that works? And I wasn't the only one who corrected you on it. Thanks. Goodnight. Nothing left to say on the matter to you.

You're wrong for not understanding what I've been getting at, yes. It should have been clear, but you made the incorrect assumption of thinking that I truly believed the 3DS was actually emulating these N64 titles. Lol, it's alright, I understand how you made the mistake, but hopefully we've cleared it all up now.

In case you're unaware: emulation requires a system to have much more processing power than the system being emulated. To emulate a GameCube, for instance, you need a system that's much more powerful than the GameCube - not a comparable one. This is not how emulation works, and is precisely the reason some games are ported rather than emulated. If a publisher chooses to port a game, it's because that game may run adequately in said hardware. If it's a very old game that requires less processing power, the publisher might opt for emulating as it's a much, much cheaper and easier alternative to porting - it requires much less resources and time.

Hopefully this answers your questions. If you want to play Mario Sunshine, I advise you to play wherever else you want. I don't believe any of us will be emulating GameCube on our 3DS's during this lifetime.

EDIT: porting a game is a herculean task without the source code, which is used to compile the final game. Source code is proprietary and belongs to Nintendo. Unless someone is insanely, absolutely bonkers about Mario Sunshine, the chance of an unofficial port are as close to zero as they can be to actually happening. Don't count on it.

The rule of thumb used to be that a system had to be around 10x faster than the system it was emulating to do it well. However that doesn't really hold true anymore. The introduction of not particularly fast but very complex systems such as the PS2 have led to often needing significantly more. There has also been a change in the aims of a lot of modern emulators too. Most in the past aimed to simply get the emulator running the games at a good speed, and took many coding shortcuts to do it. These days there are numerous emulators being worked on such as Higan/BSNES that value emulation accuracy over speed.

I'd even say we're on the golden age of emulation, to be honest. Many great projects, great emulators and great work being put into it. A few years back even I would agree that playing on original hardware always felt best; but now, with so many excellent and accurate emulators offering options which wouldn't be easily available in original hardware, I don't honestly believe that's the case. It's a fantastic age for emulation this one we're in.
