Hi all, I have purchased a used New 3DS XL that has custom firmware installed. Currently, it has some of the previous owner's data on it. What is the easiest and safest way to clear the activity log and remove the previous owner's Mii?
It does give me the option to create or link a new Nintendo account -- so perhaps this would accomplish what I would like to do. System format seems like it would be overkill, but what would I lose in doing so? Would I have to reinstall applications like FBI and FTPD? That seems like a hassle, as I will have to remove the back panel to take out the SD card in order to reinstall FBI, FTPD and other software (by my understanding).
Any input is greatly appreciated.

System version is 11.10.0-43U and it has FBI 2.6.0 and Rosalina 2.1.0.

By the way, I've searched through this thread and these boards, and have saved teh instruction on removing the NNID through Boot9Strap, but not sure if that is necessary for my needs.

Thanks.

Do a system format, then follow https://3ds.guide/finalizing-setup to get all the homebrew back. Yes you'll have to take the SD card out.

If taking the SD card out is a big deal why not just change the system's name and birthday in the settings.

Removing the NNID won't do anything as you said you get the option to link one, so there isn't one linked.

I've been looking at ways to get Yoshi's Island (GBA) on my n2dsxl without CFW as I don't want the small but ever-present risk of bricking my console. I'm guessing that the best choice is an r41 gold cart with gbarunner2 on it, but is there any other option I might be missing?

If all you want to do is play a gba game, just get homebrew and run it with an emulator. No need to spend money on flashcarts that you might not even get working.

Follow the guide until you can get to the homebrew launcher menu, then stop, and then put homebrew in the form of 3dsx files in your 3ds folder.

It would be way, way easier to install CFW and then install the game to your home menu than to buy and try to get a flashcart working or navigate trying to find a gba emulator but it is totally up to you.

I don't really want CFW on my console until the warranty period is over so I'm looking at alternative methods. An R4 cart seems to be the best method for now, but I'm curious as to the best emulator.

What are mcu bricks and ntrboot cards?
Ntrboot is a modification for an DS flashcart to exploit a vulnerability in a 3DS console to allow to easily install custom firmware into the 3ds console. Ntrboot is only compatible with some flashcarts, if you want to modify a 3ds console with cfw, keep an eye for a compatible\ntrboot ready flashcart.

MCU Brick. Read this. This should answer your questions i hope.

It is not the best method - did you read what I wrote? Use homebrew. It is free and easier.

So, i have a issue that i haven't seen asked here:

I had to format my 32gb card wich had my games, luma, b9s, etc... Of course that i made a copy of all the files, but when i stuffed everything back and plugged the SD card in my 3ds... nothing!

Of course, after many posts in this page i managed to reinstall B9S 1.3 and Luma 1.10 (my SD is formated according to the specifications) and my 3ds booted! but telling me that it doesn't regonize the SD card.

I even tried pluggin' the SD card with the original files and it says the exact same thing! I've tried with Luma 7.1 and B9S 1.2, the CWF starter pack, and even praying to the pirate gods but my 3ds still says 'f*k u'

PD: I've follwed the gides of turdpoocharger... just in case

@REAVERS, because disappearing games can be caused by a number of different things, it's best that you make a copy of everything on the SD card to your computer.

possible causes:
  • Like what @Quantumcat said, your data is getting corrupted due to fake or dying SD card.
  • Accidentally user deleted files or reformatted SD card. Retrieving "lost" or "deleted" files will require a data recovery program.
  • The encryption between the NAND's movable.sed KeyY and smdc:/Nintendo 3DS/<ID0> subfolder no longer matches. This change is caused by either Format System Memory, System Transfer, or even restoring to an previous made SysNAND *.bin image that has an older KeyY.
  • The SD card was not formatted with the correct settings [ FAT32 format | (generally) 32 KB cluster size | MBR disk | Primary Partition ].
  • The number of installed HOME Menu titles exceeds the ~300 titles limit per a Nintendo 3DS folder.
  • The database files (import.db and title.db) found at sdmc:/Nintendo 3DS/<ID0>/<ID1>/dbs directory are either missing or corrupted from bad CIA installation or uninstall gone wrong from FBI or System Settings → Data Management.
  • The 3DS system no longer has the ticket(s) for those titles that are missing. (Greyed out X's in Data Management).
  • After replacing, upgrading, or changing to a different or bigger capacity SD card, the 3DS firmware makes another sdmc:/Nintendo 3DS/<ID0>/<ID1> subfolder. Your library is found in a different <ID1> subfolder that was created from the original SD card.
  • Incomplete homebrew SDTransfer; moving just the (decrypted) Nintendo 3DS folder between different systems does not include fixing the CMAC hashes for the various files. { This is not commonly seen for average 3DS users }
If you need help with data recovery, you may need to start a different thread or post/refer to the one below as a starting point:

Thank you for being considerate. :)
From now on, I'll edit my avatar custom title when going on long breaks.

@Quantumcat, thank you for your patience and time. I'm about ready to upgrade to Luma3DS and Godmode9, but before I do I have a few questions.
First, I want to retain access to the Eshop, all forms of multiplayer, and Streetpass.
Second, I'm getting CFW so I can do VC GBA injects via NSUI and convert cartridges to home menu titles.
Are any of these not going to happen?

As long as you don't region change, yes you'll retain access to the eShop, streetpass (if it is still going) and online & local multiplayer. You can also install GBA VC injects on your home menu and dump 3DS cartridge games to cia and install them on your home menu.
