AlphaDream, developer of the Mario & Luigi RPG series, has filed for bankruptcy

oKQWRbm.png

The end may be nigh for Mario & Luigi RPG series developer AlphaDream. After developing titles like Superstar Saga, Bowser's Inside Story, Dream Team, and other Mario & Luigi RPG titles, the studio has filed for bankruptcy. According to a Japanese article via Yahoo! Japan, the filing was due to the company having an unpayable debt of 465 million yen, or $4.3 million USD. Despite cult status of the original Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga entry, further entries only began to slow down, in terms of sales, with industry insiders reportedly claiming that the latest game, a Nintendo 3DS remake of Bowser's Inside Story had sold so poorly, that it had caused Nintendo to halt further plans to develop titles on the aging platform.

On the plus side, Nintendo won't be able to use their bullshit "We can't make another traditional Paper Mario RPG because Mario & Luigi is already a Mario RPG." excuse anymore
On the minus side, Intelligent Systems is literally raking in more money than alot of small nations with waifu simulator so they're probably too busy to do Paper Mario anymore

AD released the remakes too late in the 3DS life to make a profit since most people now just pirate 3DS games.
I strongly suspect the overwhelming majority of 3DS owners probably know nothing about 3DS game piracy. Yes, it's relatively easy to do if you can find a guide, know how to follow it, and are fearless about doing a completely unsupported modification on relatively expensive hardware. Yes. that's easy enough for most people on boards like this, probably. But the people on boards like this represent only a tiny fraction of the total 3DS market.

This sucks. The Mario and Luigi games were great, so now they’ll either not happen or be under a different dev which will never be as good. And with Paper Mario no longer being good, Mario RPGS are probably not going to happed much... at all. Maybe with this Paper Mario will at least go back to the way it used to be?

Nintendo 3DS remake of Bowser's Inside Story

The main problem is that being a remake of a DS game, you can play the original DS game on the 3DS. While you can't play GBA games on the 3DS unless you were part of the ambassador program and even then it was just a few games.

Also, it is quite evident that people tend to not buy remakes if the original still works quite well and is not that outdated.

On one hand, is a shame, on the other, what did they expect if all they were making is remakes?

That makes me wonder who will take charge of the Paper Mario series.

The first game being on the Nintendo 64 could actually use a real remake on the Switch.

Heck Color Splash must have done quite bad for not having a Switch port already.

Paper Mario is not the Mario & Luigi series, these guys never worked on Paper Mario. Their last two releases were 3DS remakes that sold pretty bad.

They did work on the crossover game that somewhat revived the series.

Going by Wikipedia:
The original Paper Mario, TTYD, and Color Splash were developed by Intelligent Systems.
Super Paper Mario was developed by Intelligent Systems and Nintendo SPD.
Sticker Star was developed by Intelligent Systems and Vanpool.
And M&L: Paper Jam was developed by AlphaDream.

So, no, this bankruptcy has no bearing on the future of Paper Mario.

It's not good mate-fair enough you don't like the games but respect the people who try and make entertainment for us
Ehh not really. Mario and Luigi 1 was quite unique... but after 2 they all felt like it was the same game in more ways than one with 3 only being truly unique for the Bowser sections.

Hmm, sad news. but silver lining maybe there's room for a Super Mario RPG 2 now? If Square/Enix and Nintendo can work together again.

Here's the sales figures.

Paper Mario 1.37 million

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door 1.91 million

Super Paper Mario 4.23 million

Paper Mario: Sticker Star 2.43 million

Paper Mario: Color Splash 186 thousand

And just for reference Super Mario RPG has sold 2.14 million copies.

I had such high hopes back when Square released Mario Hoops 3-on-3. Alas, that was thirteen years ago.

And yet Nintendo keep the Wii U alive for eight years? No wonder they say the 3DS is what keep the company alive.

Heck there is a reason Just Dance stopped selling for the Wii U but there is a Just Dance 2019 for the Wii.

A new M&L or Paper Mario is my most anticipated release for the switch... Maybe now we can have a full blown paper mario rpg? Crossing fingers... :yayswitch:
