When I put a thumbdrive in my Wiiu it needs to be formatted, and this format isn't recognized on PC so I can't put the files I want on their. I have a MicroSD that works (hacked it years ago not sure how) I seem to recall needing a USB drive to instal wiiu games (gamecube, Vwii etc can be stored on micro SD and I needed to install wiiu to internal memory which I'm out of) Is there some way around this formatting shenanigans? Do I have to/is it possible to copy files to the micro SD and then instal onto the empty thumbdrive?

You actually don't have to format from my understanding. When I inserted my thumb drive into my Wii U it told me to format as well, but I'm pretty sure it still worked when I tried to use USB Loader GX to run Homebrew. If your computer can't read it, then go to your disc utility and format it to FAT32. Hit the button to not format when prompted on the Wii U. It should work.

This isn't really recommended, everything will corrupt very quickly because of the constant read/write. But as @MarioMario69 said, you can search disk management in Windows 10, it will probably show it as a raw drive and can be formatted from there.

so I should just say no when my wiiu asks to format and put everything on a fat32 drive and i'll be able to install?

Wii U uses its own format for drives, if you really want to install to it then let the Wii U format it then put all your installable games on an SD for WUP installer.

oh god dammit so my original assumption was correct.

new issue, can't seem to boot into the homebrew launcher. I have some cold boot thing installed that gives me options on my gamepad when I start up the console. Boot system menu lets me use nintendont and installed games, but the homebrew launcher hangs on a blue screen with bubbles. if I click boot homebrew launcher from the gamepad I get a -3 in the corner

HBL must have been on something you removed, maybe the SD but probably the channel for it was on the USB you wiped. I can't remember how to reinstall it, but it should be easy with a quick search.

looks like it was just being finicky, as boot homebrew launcher worked randomly after a few tries. I don't see the games on my SD card though, in the wup installerGX2 folder. I must have put them in the wrong place (put it in haxchi because that's where the installed folder from an old wiiu game was) where should I place the files for wup to see it? It's a bunch of wiiu eshop virtual console games and wiiu games.

edit the files are in folders, one it called eshop with a bunch of folders to other games and one is just pikmin 3. is that okay too see? should I have them as an archive instead or as extracted folders?

I think it's in a root folder called 'install'.

Alright everything working now, my only issue was lots of "loadline" games that won't install with wup and must be played with a seperate loadline installer. Is there any way to have these games show up on the wiiu menu screen? or some way to install them to a thumbdrive/nand? Currently I have to go to boot homebrew menu>loadline to play/see them. Seems like everything I find now is in this loadline format to work with micro SD cards (which I don't have space on lol)
