Hello GBATemp Community! I don't know if this is the place for this sort of question, but I'm curious if this would actually be possible. Since Super Mario 64 was decompiled and the source code is now available, would it be possible to port Super Mario 64 to the 3DS (or some other console, like the Switch) if someone took the time to do it?

It's certainly not impossible, but very unlikely - even more so on the 3DS... such a task is still monumental to do, and with the 3DS homebrew community petering out, I can't see it happening. And on Switch it's just easier to get the game running via emulation and leave it at that: and who wants to spend hundreds of hours on such a task only to get a quick C&D off Nintendo?

The Old3ds lacks the buttons necessary for camera control , so the bottom screen would be necessary for specific button pressings ; but it would certainly be possible on the new3ds with the c-stick and more processing power

The dpad would suffice as a substitute for the C buttons, it wasn't used on the original N64 version.

Just play sm64 ds
I actually like the DS version on its own merits, but it definitely does not control nearly as well as the N64 version. This goes beyond just the lack of an analog stick. I disliked having to hold down a button to run and there's far too much momentum to the movement. On N64, you could push the analog stick all the way in a direction and Mario will almost immediately run at his full speed with very snappy momentum. The DS version has a bit of lag on the movement, it takes some additional time for characters to reach their full speed after you start moving. Nintendo added the ability to charge up your run speed with the run button to try to compensate, but it never felt right to me. Turning also a mess. The game feels overall more slippery. I've played a couple of other 3D platformers on the DS (they're a rare breed, but a few do exist) that handled movement much better.

One thing I will give the Mario 64 DS controls credit for however is the use of the L button as a simple button to center the camera behind you. The "comparable" function of the R button in the original Mario 64 did position the camera behind Mario, but it also zoomed the camera to an ungodly close and low angle. There's no comparison.
