I standard recommendation is to have malewarebytes premium according many white hats that I have spoken with. Since windows keeps making new updates I rather heard that it's scanner is going toe to toe agents avasta. So yeah just get Malewarebytes premium.

Anything you want, really. I'm partial to Malwarebytes and NOD32, but Windows Defender was deemed the best available. Probably because it interacts with the NT kernel in a way others can't. My advice is to not be cocky on the internet. If someone is smart, they can figure out how to embed malicious payloads in video codec containers and header data of images. Nothing is truly safe on Windows. It's one big exploit hole.
I do it often. Reluctantly.

So use a keygen or move to a system that isn't constantly targeted at such a rate that developers lost hope on fixing it all.

Windows Defender is free, light on resources, stays out of one's way unless needed, and blocks approximately 99.6% of real-world threats according to the AV Comparatives Feb-May test. I don't see any reason to make things more complicated by installing another antimalware program.
My experience has been that third-party antimalware programs can increase one's risk of compatibility issues with other programs (I've seen AVG bork an entire school district's network of teacher computers), and more programs means more potential vectors for security vulnerabilities.

That's the district's fault for not shelling out for an actual IT manager and AV licensing. They saw "FREE", and jumped on board. AVG is the worst on the market. Any security professional will tell you that.

McAfee had to be the absolute worst POS antivirus I've ever used, seeing as it corrupted the boot partition on my hard drive, forcing me to reinstall Windows XP. This was
back in what, 2003 or so, I think. Haven't used it since. I'd use Windows Defender, but can it really compare to something like Norton Security Suite?

AVG was just an example. I've seen similar issues with others.

Interesting, I mean I get Norton free via my ISP, but I've been deliberating uninstalling that and turning Defender back on

The place I work for uses System Center Endpoint Protection. It's the paid version of Windows Defender.

I bought the premium version after a massive leak of keys (which I actually thought was legal keys). What they did was to explain in the software that you had a leaked/pirated key. They said it was sad that you had one. However they still allowed the software to work for all the months the key was for (12 I think). So I said "fuck it, if you're this nice. I will buy a license!) I still pay for said license. It's nice to have in the background just running. If I would choose another AV (since malwarebytes isn't a AV really) it would be Bitdefender. It's awesome and really light on the system.
Common sense can only get you so far. A worm is something your common sense can't protect you against.
Actually I don't really use any antivirus other than microsoft defender nowadays and haven't had any virus for years. But back then I have to admit I can be very careless but fortunately malwarebytes did save my ass a couple of times.

I been using AVG free for well over a decade, I think it's close to 2 decades in all honesty.

Ahem...on a serious answer: I only once paid for an antivirus scanner, and it was more for loyalty than anything else. I'm talking about avast (also my vote, btw). There is a large "but" in there, though. After that year, they just kept on begging me to renew their license. Not that I don't understand their business model, but jeez...it was like virtual Jehova's witnesses.
And an important factor (which was also why I paid for): the free version scans and removes the same threats as the paid version. The paid version just has some extra options that are just cosmetics if you've got malwarebytes installed on the side.
Oh, and...wtf is "honk"? Is that an internet joke or something? I'm not saying @linuxares is correct by default in that it's a virus, but really...virus scanners are literally the one kind of programs that live and die with their reputation. I've had it happen more than a few times that a relative "found a virus they couldn't get rid of", where in the end the "scanner" turned out to be scareware. It was pretty exhausting convincing people that MY scanner was better than theirs because mine didn't find anything (I hate that situation: I'm hailed in as the expert, but they're hellbent on believing the first stupid program they can find on the internet.)
PS: just for giggles I once installed this on A FRESH WINDOWS XP computer. the program claimed I had well over a dozen malware threats that only their full version could clean
