No, you need custom firmware to use Checkpoint. You can use JKSM with only steelhax, but it's strongly recommended to install full cfw as there's no downsides to it.

Does Checkpoint really not work without CFW? I thought it was the same as JKSM but with a prettier UI

It relies on Rosalina to get the info for all installed games iirc. Pretty sure that's also how it gets game icons.
