exactly. My local GSs would think I was trying to trade in a broken system if I tried to trade in for the same system.

It's not like it's generating unnecessary waste, anyway. Unless Gamestop have an extremely bizarre business strategy, I'd imagine that they are intending to resell the traded-in units for, you know, money.
Not only that but it's a way to get back the unpatched units from the market, maybe they have a deal with Nintendo to do so.
