Mojang has cancelled their ambitious "Super Duper" graphics pack for Minecraft

During E3 2017, Microsoft took to the stage to announce its yearly showcase of new games and content updates. In their lineup, was the "Super Duper Graphics Pack", for Minecraft, which would give the game a 4K graphical makeover, fit with majorly improved graphics, shaders, and lighting. At the time, it was promised for a 2018 release, for Xbox One X and PC, via the Bedrock version. But, after two years, and hardly any updates, Mojang has finally cancelled the project, citing performance issues as the cause. Considered as an "ambitious initiative", the developers found that running the game with such graphics was too demanding on certain devices. As such, the Super Duper Graphics Pack will not see a release, and Mojang will instead focus on "other ways" for fans to experience Minecraft with a new look.

Unrelated: Something that would be nice is if Optifine were integrated into Minecraft. Though I hardly see this happening as Optifine is closed source, unless there was an agreement between the creator of the mod and Mojang to share the source code.

It's not very hard to see why Mojang didn't release this.
If you install a shaderpack on the PC version of Minecraft, you're going to need a very powerful computer to have it running at max settings at anything above 60 FPS.

Yeah, even when using the non Java version, it would slow the game way too much.

Glad they will never(?) release it...

It would make Minecraft another "remastered" piece of junk (to say the least).

Minecraft is better as it was originally intended without fancy SuperDuperHiResGraphicsCrap.

I dunno, it looks way better than many unofficial shaders and it could have been neat for people with good hardware.

Now show me an official minecraft version without hunger and we can talk.

So...class action lawsuit anyone? Can't do that since I live in germany and our system does not allow class action lawsuits...

This is, at least to my understanding, missguided marketing. Is it realy ok for companys to promise a major upgrade, which might have lead to more Xbox One X / Minecraft sales, just to come out a few years late with a "sorry, too much work"?

I mean, the modding community has put out some amazing graphic mods for Minecraft. And now Microsoft can't even implement propper 4k support? Ridicules!

Apparently they can't do what they were showing either, so mods win out in the end. Not that it makes much difference to me, I had my fill of Minecraft a long, long time ago.
Minecraft is shit anyway.

Super Duper graphics would have allowed me to give the game another chance, though.

Look, I know at least one person that bought the Xbox One X instead of the regular Xbox One because he is a huge minecraft fan but does not have a gaming PC.
He too wanted to experience better graphics on the console version, that was, and I quote, the only reason why he bought the X Modell instead of the regular Modell.

And MS made a huge deal out of the update, promoting it very thouroughly during their (i think) E3 press conference.

And yes, I am not from the USA, but I thought that this was exactly what class action lawsuits where all about - so that bigger companys don't have to be sued by each individual but instead only by one person representing everyone that took "damage" bacause of the company that is getting sued.

Or, to be more precise: Could the people that have bought an Xbox One X after MS announced the super duper graphics pack (and prove this) sue them for compensation, e.g. the difference between the base model and the more expensive X model?

And no, I am personally not affected by this and generally don't care - I am just interested in the legal possibilities after MS made that move.

You do realize games like BoTW exist right? The Tegra SoC in the Switch I would assume is more than enough. Then again, not sure how a C++ rewrite of Minecraft would really handle shaders like this.
That's why I include the "EVEN then" line, Because Doom 2016 exist on Switch. yes, the Tegra is impressive once fully untapped, but can't say the same about any android phone. My bet is this is the why, the phones, but it's just a theory, so we better wait till more details surface about the why or something.

EDIT: While I reread everything to see if I didn't miss anything... I miss the point of it: It was mean for the Microsoft platforms, so, no, the phones wherent guilty of it.
NOW I wonder why they cancelled. Team got moved to something else? now I am curious.

Yeah it's an interesting situation. I don't think it's something of technical limitations, but maybe something internally with the team(s).
