Post-World War II game 'Svoboda 1945' from award-winning team in the works
Above all, Svoboda 1945, like Attentat 1942, is a historically accurate game written by professional historians. “Svoboda 1945 immerses you in the story of a small village in the Czech-German borderlands. Its troubled past has left scars which run deep and affect even your family. You will revisit dark personal histories and struggle to find reconciliation,” says Vít Šisler, the game’s lead designer.
I recently met the lead designer, Vít Šisler, who made me discover Attentat 1942. If you haven't heard of the game before, then worry not as I didn't either before meeting Šisler. The game is set during the present day, following stories based off real people's account during World War II, rather than focusing directly on the battles themselves.
Throughout the game I was quite captivated with its art style, music direction and investigative point-and-click gameplay, which somewhat reminded me of the Nintendo DS game Hotel Dusk: Room 215, a game I have grown a soft spot for. However the primary aspect that got me coming back to Attentat 1942 was the educational one delivered in the perspective of a regular game. It's not a surprise that a version of this game is used in schools. By playing their game and talking to the lead designer, Šisler's team struck me as one with a comendable vision and given what is known of Svoboda 1945 by now, it surely looks like a worthy successor of Attentat 1942, and definitely a game to keep an eye out for.
Svoboda 1945 is being developed with the help of custom-built tools in Unity and includes a combination of interactive comics, video-interviews, archival film footage, and mini-games. “We put a lot of effort into the accessibility of our game. Unlike most games, Svoboda 1945 tests your empathy, not your reflexes,” states Ondřej Paška, the game’s programmer.
Planned for a Q1 release in 2020 on PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, Svoboda 1945 will also be making an appearance at this year's Gamescom. Players can already add the game to their wishlist on Steam.
