Post-World War II game 'Svoboda 1945' from award-winning team in the works

Based in Prague in the Czech Republic, Charles Games recently announced their upcoming game Svoboda 1945. While their previous game, the award-winning Attentat 1942, took place during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, Svoboda 1945 (“svoboda” being the Czech word for “freedom”) deals with the violent events that occurred in the wake of the Nazi retreat at the end of World War II, such as the expulsion of Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia, the Communists’ rise to power, and the forced collectivization of farm lands.

Above all, Svoboda 1945, like Attentat 1942, is a historically accurate game written by professional historians. “Svoboda 1945 immerses you in the story of a small village in the Czech-German borderlands. Its troubled past has left scars which run deep and affect even your family. You will revisit dark personal histories and struggle to find reconciliation,” says Vít Šisler, the game’s lead designer.

I recently met the lead designer, Vít Šisler, who made me discover Attentat 1942. If you haven't heard of the game before, then worry not as I didn't either before meeting Šisler. The game is set during the present day, following stories based off real people's account during World War II, rather than focusing directly on the battles themselves.

Throughout the game I was quite captivated with its art style, music direction and investigative point-and-click gameplay, which somewhat reminded me of the Nintendo DS game Hotel Dusk: Room 215, a game I have grown a soft spot for. However the primary aspect that got me coming back to Attentat 1942 was the educational one delivered in the perspective of a regular game. It's not a surprise that a version of this game is used in schools. By playing their game and talking to the lead designer, Šisler's team struck me as one with a comendable vision and given what is known of Svoboda 1945 by now, it surely looks like a worthy successor of Attentat 1942, and definitely a game to keep an eye out for.

Svoboda 1945 is being developed with the help of custom-built tools in Unity and includes a combination of interactive comics, video-interviews, archival film footage, and mini-games. “We put a lot of effort into the accessibility of our game. Unlike most games, Svoboda 1945 tests your empathy, not your reflexes,” states Ondřej Paška, the game’s programmer.

Planned for a Q1 release in 2020 on PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, Svoboda 1945 will also be making an appearance at this year's Gamescom. Players can already add the game to their wishlist on Steam.

The comics look great, but why include video-interviews and archived footage alongside it?

Šisler mentioned that they opted for this mix because comic-styled parts are fictional to give context to the player while the live action footage is based off real testimonies. They wanted to convey this distinction and did so via the contrast in visual style.

News of this game comes at a nice time to distract us and reassure us of our stance in the current "video games make us violent" re-reemergence.

Oh cool, so I get to play a game where my country goes from being occupied by the Nazis, to becoming a country being occupied by the Soviets! Fucking western betrayal! Game looks pretty good tbh.

So rarely see this sort of thing in games. Usually goes right from world war 2 to full bore cold war, maybe with a stop in Vietnam if we are really lucky.

Ummm, west is ever only involved in any war if they can pillage, harvest, rape, steal, use, abuse... So there you have it, that's why America entered last to participate in world war 2, when the war was literally already over. As for these few futile attempts to throw Nazis and Russians in the same basket, well let's answer it like this, with a question that even a little baby of today can answer. Whose been terrorising the world from fall of Nazis till day today and still today, bullying, invading, occupying, again stealing, blackmailing, pillaging etc? One word, 3 letters, thank you.

An unusual idea for a game. I can't quite decide if that comic book style appeals to me, but the game is probably worth checking out for its historical background. Sometimes I'm in the mood for more serious stuff. I'll add it to my wishlist.

Ummm, by "west", I was referring to the UK and France.
