Release Date update:

Release Date is now Confirmed to 28th of February!
And the best news are, the game will officially include both Japanese and English audio out of the box, so no undubs or mods will be needed. Take a look at this tweet: https://twitter.com/marvelous_games/status/1220360539815047169?s=09
----

Hey there Everyone!

Since the 3DS Rune Factory 4's language files are very similar to the special edition on the switch, I took some time to organize and edit them to work with the switch version.
I'm not a translator myself, and I didn't want to put machine translations in, so anything that's new or heavily changed is still in Japanese, but most things from the 3DS version (story, items, maps, names etc.) should be in English.

Also some things are not perfect, you'll see some pronoun gender mismatches and other weird stuff.
Use LayeredFS to install it like other game mods on the Switch. For example on SXOS, extract the zip into: "[sdCardRoot]\sxos\titles\" folder. You may need to restart your switch after copying the files.

If you encounter any crashes while playing, please let me know by telling me what you were doing/ which dialogue line was visible before the crash.

Hope you enjoy it, while we wait for an international version.
Cheers!

That is what I'm using and it works perfectly. I'm also on the latest version of SXOS, older versions didn't support LayeredFS, and I heard one particular version broke it, but has been fixed since.

How different is the file structure? I'm hoping that I can get gender swap mods up and running on switch...

I'm just gonna drop the gender swap files in and cry when it doesn't work :)

Looked at the files.

It wont work. 3D files and text have been converted to a new extension and the text files wont work either as the exclusion of new lines.

Woohoo. I wonder if I'd be able to actually attempt to contribute to this... I'm worried it'll be months till any projects start

I found this on an external site. I've been using it for the last 20 or so hours of gameplay and it works very well. I'm surprised this works as well as it does. I was already finished with Arc 2 before I found this, and Arc 3 is proving a lot easier to navigate, especially with all the inventory management and menuing. Thank you!

(Short aside: this somehow reintroduces Arthur's crop prediction bug from the 3DS version that wasn't present in the unmodded switch version. Any clue why? Also, why are dialog options that the player chooses occasionally different?)

There are some sentences and expressions in Japanese that can mean totally different things based on the scenario but are written the same. Also in Japanese is a genderless language (at least grammatically) meaning you can't always decide "he" or "she" from the sentence, and many-times it's written the same. That's why you'll find some gender mismatches in the translation, since the function in excel inserted the first English "match" for that specific sentence.

This are quite common with short sentences (like "he's asleep"), and since I cannot speak or read Japanese I can't fix these myself.

If there were official translation errors in the 3DS version, then if matched correctly those will be now present again.

I noticed some strange dialog options too, could be the same reason, since they tend to be short, and they are in the story dialog language file too.

The untranslated lines in the middle of the dialog are most likely slight changes, and since I told excel to only include exact matches, those didn't get copied over.

If someone has the will and the knowledge to translate the rest, I have a spreadsheet that's easily filterable to untranslated lines .There are 10280 lines that are untranslated out of the 108927 lines, not counting the mismatched translations.

I would say it's not worth it since the game is supposed to come to EU in the Winter.

Anyway thanks for trying it, I'm happy you're enjoying it.

Absolutely not worth it, since the as-of-yet undefined release date is just the tentative release window of '2019' and there are so many other things coming out this year. I was just curious. Also, Japanese is not a 'genderless language' as there are pronouns that include gender. かれ and かのじょ for example mean he and she respectively, they just aren't using those specific ones. Japanese is incredibly context-sensitive though; you may want to use that descriptor from now on.

I really was just curious why some things were verbatim 3DS like the save message indicating you're using a 3DS and things like 'Obsidian Mansion' becoming 'Obsidian House' etc. If it really was an algorithm that simply replaced 100% matches that should not be possible.

Anyway, thanks again. This is very useful, especially when I have a lot of trouble with Kanji.

I managed to scrounge up the game finally. I'm a little surprised so much text so near to the beginning of the game is still untranslated even though. It's a little disconcerting how much is untranslated or simply cut off entirely and menus are untouched (I guess they use images?) I guess this still has a long way to go, but at least it's a really good start.

On the arguments that some have that the game will be coming to the West "someday," I think this project should be completed because if anyone remembers the attempts by others in the past to undub the game (and it had an awful dub if you don't remember) on the 3DS found that it was just so ridiculously hard that the project completely stalled without any hope at all until someone decided to translate instead. Given that the Switch version uses the same basic file layouts and etc but even has some newer formats that might be just that much harder to work with, it's obviously not going to be any better for undubbing, so in the end this is pretty much a required thing eventually. Better sooner rather than waiting a year and then realizing the hard way all over it has to be done this way, no?

Might be unrelated to the original post, but do you have any idea on how to decompile and recompile the original .3ds rom file successfully? I'm trying to translate the 3ds game into my language but can't seem to follow asia81's tutorial, especially because it is meant for pokemon games, there might be additional procedures I must do for this game (couldn't extract the romfs file and rebuild it). Sorry if this annoys you, btw.

Once the Western version hits it will already be translated, seems it will just be a matter of moving the lines over to this version, talk was about translating the Japanese text now? seems kinda pointless when it could just be taken from the Western version in the future if needed.

Not working. I'm on cfw 8.1 and sxos 2.8.

I'm on cfw 8.0.1 with SXOS 2.8 so I don't know about 8.1.

Some things to look out for:
- Extract the zip file in the correct location don't just copy the zip file.
- Be sure to reboot your switch once when you copied the files on the SD card
- Try out other game mods with layeredFS if those doesn't work layeredFS might be broken on 8.1 and SXOS

If none of these helps, I don't really know how to help you sorry.

Tried downgrading my firmware to 8.0.1 and now it is finally working. Thanks!

So I've been messing around with this, and I believe the reason is that it seems the text boxes have a character limit of 70 and I have been so far unable to where this limitation may be set.

I've also taken some time to try my hand a redoing the translation so that way every line that was in the original English game that wasn't removed should appear where it belongs, at least when it comes to dialog text. With this any lines that have been slightly changed between the RF4 Japanese text and the RF4S, there was quite a few with one or two character changes between the versions, should now have the English translation from the original game as well. As there was more than I wanted to spend time on I didn't check each one over in a machine translator to double check that the over all gist was the same but I did at least check a few to make sure that I wasn't just throwing completely new lines in where they didn't belong. Also the RF4S Japanese text used a slightly different character for "-" so most of the lines that contained that didn't get translated in your version. Please let me know if anyone encounters any issues with it.

All you need to do to use mine is just to overwrite it to in scripts folder of LordBone's original upload.

Here's a video clip of the same dialog that OP posted but with the text at the end translated this time

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I've also edited another file to remove the Japanese honorifics from most of the Player's name since that wasn't in the RF4 English version. If you'd like I can post that here as well and I would even be able to post a version of it with English characters, so for example it would be "san" instead of "さん" and so forth. Just let me know if this is something you would like me to upload as well.

If possible could you upload both so whoever wants the honorifics and those who don't want them can choose?
I know the official localization won't have them but it would be nice to have the option nonetheless.
