Switch Online subscribers can play Mario Tennis Aces free for limited time, with new "game trials"

Z6ceAhQ.png

Nintendo is rolling out a new idea to help make their Nintendo Switch Online service more appealing. Starting on August 7th, any current subscribers to NSO will be able to play Mario Tennis Aces for free, using Nintendo's newly introduced Game Trials. You'll be able to play as much of the game as you want until August 13th, in which the trial will end, and afterward, Nintendo will hold a 33% off sale for those interested in buying the game, following the week-long demo. Any progress you make in the Game Trial version of the game will be carried over to the full product, should you choose to purchase it. Currently, this deal has only been announced for the EU/UK, while Japan will be offering Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker as their first Game Trial title. There's no word on if this will be coming to North America yet.

Edit: North America will be getting this too.

I think Nintendo could keep going a bit longer on NES if they actually got some more licenses and released famicom games for the US service (yeah I know its region free but itd still last things a bit longer). But seriously we need more systems if they're not gonna give online users any switch games. Also higher availability of those NES joycons and more of those in the future ( although once you get to n64 itd be kinda weird)
It's time for them to move on, NES games are boring as hell, we need SNES.

I have never played earthbound/mother. Video game boards/forms not talking at all about Nintendo trolling, I find weird.

Play the Snes game first, is the less depressing one and is not that hard.

The English patch for the GBA 1&2 Mother not only fully translates the first game but gives you a cheat item to level up faster.

And Mother 3 English patch is a masterpiece.

For sure with just first party and a handful of stuff that sold in the millions and everyone's already played, and Nintendo should stop now because they arent gonna get any more good stuff. but there are still games worth playing today. As somebody who enjoys simple arcade games as much as a big open world RPG I'm definitely biased but I cant turn down stuff like mr. gimmick and lifeforce. But yeah the SNES does have a lot more RPGs you could sink many many hours into and would be better for the online service

And yet, people have castigated me for being "entitled" for wanting my money's worth, more than NES games would justify me paying for it.

It's easy to fall into the trap of expecting too much when the service is $20/year. I'd like some dedicated servers, but even that might be asking a bit too much when PS+ mostly uses P2P at triple the subscription cost.

But a few SNES games is not that unreasonable, no? Surely, we will get more than NES games that last more than ten minutes. I can't even enjoy them for more than that. RPGs on the other hand, actually feel worth my time. Is it really too much for them to add a few games that AREN'T NES?

No, that's definitely not unreasonable. They should've started adding SNES games a while ago. And I say that despite the fact that I own a SNES and all the best cartridges already.

I have a Super NT with an SD2SNES, but I'm mostly curious as how NERD will handle the emulation.

Yeah, there are definitely still benefits to having the games available in a portable form factor. Nintendo made all the styles in Super Mario Maker 2 look great on Switch's screen, after all.

At the same time, GBA already has almost all of the best SNES games too. Wouldn't mind if they started releasing GBA games on Switch VC instead of SNES.

My only beef with GBA conversions is the inferior audio quality, some hacks restore them, but still.

I mean currently. Of course some NES games are true classics, but every recent month has been bottom of the barrel NES games.

Donkey Kong 3? Volleyball? Star Soldier? Ever since Feb. of this year, they've reached the end of the line when it comes to standout old-school Nintendo games. That's not to say that some of the newer offerings aren't good, but...

An extremely short demo window for a new Switch game seems far more appealing than the addition of Volleyball, for the NES. Nintendo needed to do something to make their service more than just dusty NES games and jank online, because they apparently refuse to move on to the SNES despite it being a smart choice.
I disagree, Mario tennis (not that I hate it) is a somewhat low production value title for a company like Nintendo, it should have just been free with subscription, and it really never should have been full price in first place.

This is great so is it limited per day or something or full blown game until a certain period. this is definitely a step towards the right direction!
