Developed by Nintendo EAD in tandem with Retro Studios and published by Nintendo, Mario Kart 7 has proven to be quite a success for the company. Having launched way back in December 2011 worldwide, it managed to sell a whopping 5 million copies in the next fiscal year of 2012, earning the title of most-sold 3DS game at the time and, in turn, helping to ramp up the 3DS's sales and popularity. To this day, Mario Kart 7 still continues to relatively hold up pretty well, having sold a total of 18.38 million units worldwide (as of recent reports) followed by Pokémon X/Y (16.40 million) and Pokémon Sun/Moon (16.16 million). The game has also been included in several bundles, like the relatively recent and aptly named New 2DS XL + Mario Kart 7, which helped boost up sales even late in the console's lifespan.

I had the 3DS since launch date, and it blows my mind that 8 years have passed since we got this glorious game in it's full and fancy 3D, it felt like having a Wii in your hands.
I still remember going to sleep until 3:00 AM while playing with friends online. I don't know why Mario Kart 8 Deluxe does not feel the same for me, maybe I'm just a boring adult now haha.

Mario Kart 7 indeed feels like a Wii game in miniature.
Absolutely loved it and was a kid too back then.
You're right as we get older newer games don't seem to impress us anymore like the older ones
