Red Square, A Yume Nikki Fan Game for the Nintendo Virtual Boy

redsquare.png

Red Square (programming by Kresna, graphics by Nyrator) was created over 6 weeks for the 2019 Dream Diary Game Jam. Game play is described as being simple, and consists of collecting items before heading to the exit. With this update the ROM is now fully compatible with actual hardware. FB and FB+ users must pad the ROM with method #3 (duplicate data) and a default size of 21 (2 MB).

it means...dream...journal? is that right? My japanese isn't very good, but I get some basic words.

...dream diary game jam. okay. yes. i'm slow.

I have a friend who absolutely adores the virtual boy. Modded one, painted it pink, and calls it the virtual girl. This is a pretty awesome community, glad to see it's still being supported so well.

It's an old rpg maker 2003 game that someone from japan made. Eventually the source files were lost but it seems to made it ways to steam anyhow. YOu can also pick it up off of steam and it's an alright game. Kinda weird but fun if you're into creepy wandering games. Now I have two VB games. This and the Jack Frost SMT Game as well. (I don't imagine there's too much else to get)

Uh... That's way to be oscure for the sake of fame.

Anyone around here owns a Virtual Boy?

Make a Rayman fan game for the Game and Watcheck

That would be quite easy, the hard part would be running it in an actual Game and Watch model.

But Rayman would lose quite a lot by being turned into a Game and Watch game since those were really really limited.

A Nes or Gameboy version meanwhile, would still be close enough to Rayman to be fun.

I actually think that's what makes it interesting, and it would be funny for somebody to make a game and watch out of some big RPG or open world game

The only difference with a regular Game and Watch game would be the main character kinda looking like Rayman. And that's it.

A Nes or Gameboy meanwhile, would be able to adapt Rayman 1, even with the downgrade of graphics and sound.

Well yeah, if you're just changing the overlay. If you really wanted to you could make a giant game and watch that could fit enough stuff to make it similar to the actual game, and improve timing and animation too. You could probably make the whole thing in color and have fluid animation if you were clever enough on where things went.

Actually I have Rayman for the GBC. It's an amazing game, animation's really smooth and the art is really good. Fun game.

So, why would anyone beyond the six owners of a Virtual Boy want this? Congrats to the dev for the "hey, look at me!", but I'm here to spread the "nobody cares and you know they wouldn't beyond the hipster aesthetic" rhetoric. This console was a failure because it made people sick, and while the sadist in me can find worth in this, I don't find enough to make myself sick. So, with this said, collecting originals can be understood, but anyone else publishing to capitalize on my sadism is a douche. Fuck you, and spread your talents usefully.

But then it wouldn't be a Game and Watch game anymore.
