I'm glad to hear that it isn't vaporware or a scam after all (there were some pretty hefty rumours about it some months ago).

But when you're comparing it to the GPD win...are you talking about the first or the second when saying it's better?

The Smach Z uses a Ryzen Embedded processor with Vega graphics so I'm sure it's better than anything GPD Win (as they use Intel graphics). I'm a backer and they were never vaporware, but the maker is very secretive about their stuff and all backer updates were under NDA, which may have contributed to make people think it was a scam.

Nice to hear. :)

I'm still on the fence on the device, though. The concept was revealed when steam controllers were new. And while those "touchpads" feel nice, they (nor the joystick) aren't a replacement for a D-pad. Is there anything on that front happening, or is this basically the device you'll get?

They have "Z-pads", which are like little magnetic controller buttons that you can put on those touchpads to make them physical buttons. They're not replacements per se, since they just sit on the touchpad, but it's a good workaround.

They actually have some retro console button pads that you can get for the right touchpad, too, like N64/SNES/NES/GC face buttons and such you can get along with a physical d-pad, so that's nice.

But honestly, for the price, you're way better off just buying a gaming laptop. $700 for an APU, 64GB of storage, and 4GB of RAM is way overpriced, portability isn't an excuse for like a $400+ upcharge on the hardware IMO.

It depends. You can't move a gaming laptop around like that, whereas with the Smach Z I could put it with its case together with my Switch in my usual backpack instead of having to use a full-blown big laptop backpack. As a backer, I think it costed me around 400 or 500€, which isn't too bad actually. ($700 is quite expensive, I agree.)

They should've kept the modular design for future upgrades, but I think they had to drop it due to patents or something with the manufacturer (they switched manufacturers mid-development).
