I definitely have the latest 2.7.1 BETA boot file on the root of my SD card.

But something else I noticed... When I go into OFW with the SD card inserted. I get a message pop up saying that "A system update is required to use the microSDXC memory card." Should I do this?
Yes this is to enable reading of exFAT-partitioned memory cards in your switch :-)

That prompt is for the exFAT driver update, don't waste your time using exFAT since you want to use CFW/Homebrew, just backup your files on the card, and convert the SD card to FAT32, and copy the file back.

One says not to worry. The other person says to do it.

Should I do it or what? I definitely have files larger than 4gb that I want to use.

Did the update.

Still getting a black screen when I enable the EmuNAND and try to load CFW.

I have reformatted the card as ExFat and transferred the boot file to the root. Alongside my License file.. I dont understand?

FAT32 and exFAT both “work”. There are issues with both though. FAT32 is preferred since its issues can be overcome.

FAT32 has a limit on file size to 4GB. It doesn’t mean anything bigger than that can’t be installed, it means bigger files will be automatically split in smaller files of size 4GB and the rest in the last one. It’s also a bit more complicated to format FAT32 on larger memory devices.

ExFAT has one big disadvantage - it’ll eventually corrupt the files. Because it needs a license Nintendo only pays for licenses actually used - that’s the reason for online update of this feature.

That OFW couldn’t use microSD card, that’s exFaT formatted, would not prevent the OFW to start. OFW would not be able to access the card. CFW, if installed with ChoiDujourNX and exFAT installation chosen, would work, independent of the OFW.

But generally, if you don’t have a lot of programs already installed I’d recommend to stick to FAT32. New installations will split its files automatically.

Nintendo will only provide ExFat support if it detects a card that's formatted to ExFat. Since you are already on the latest firmware (you shouldn't have updated the official way, the other guy gave you bad advice), I would get the ExFat support via the popup. Then, I would just delete the emunand and redo it, so that emunand will have exfat support. You could add it to your existing emunand, but deleting it and redoing it will be much easier. Keep in mind that you will run into this issue again if you restore the NAND backup that you made since your NAND backup does not have exfat support.
Use atmosphere. SX is malware.

This is exactly what I meant, sorry if I got the terminology wrong.

No need to make comments like this. I appreciate your help above but we both know I obviously got the terminology wrong. No need to be a smart ass.

Sorry if it offended you. Huge part of my job is IT problem analysis and solving. Experience taught me not to invest time in a job till I get clear and valid information. I’ve spent too much time solving poorly formulated problems, guessing what the real issue might be. In this case there was ambiguity, that your Switch was not patched was not confirmed until later post. I believe I wrote you all the needed information in the first reply.

Thanks man! Got it now :)

All good bro, forgive and forget.

In other news.. It's working now. I managed to fix it by deleting the Emunand and recreating it.

I just have another 2 quick questions to ask though, I'm assuming ya'll might know the answer.

1. I hear about people installing homebrew browsers and stuff to their CFW switch. But this confuses me, because to access this stuff, don't you need a WiFi connection? Wouldn't having an active WiFi connection to your Switch on CFW get you banned? Or will Nintendo not ban you unless you attempt to boot a pirated game and try to play online? How does this work?

2. Is there a way to load games onto the SD card via connecting the Switch to the PC using a USB cable? Rather than having to eject the SD card every time and dragging them on and then having to rejig the console?

1. There are a few ways of connecting online without having to worry about connecting to N's server accidentally (i.e Custom DNS, incognito, and SX's stealth mode)

2. There is a homebrew called nxmpt that allows you to connect the switch to your PC as MTP. However, this homebrew is still in beta. Also worth mentioning that MTP will only allow you to copy files less than 4GB.

You can also use memloader, it's a payload that will enable you to mount your sd card over usb.

download the SX SERVER and SX INSTALLER v1.52 from the SX OS website, run the SERVER on windows - point the GUI to the folder where your NSP and XCI files are on your computer, connect a USB C cable between the switch and PC. Install the SX Installer v1.52 on your switch - now you can see all the NSPs on your PC and queue install them easily.

As for homebrew.. I download that stuff I want, I don't ever put my switch online (I'm in Aus and also an SX OS user).

Okay so.. I updated my OFW to the latest 8.0.1.

Now what I've done...
> I downloaded a payload for something called Hekate. I've done a full NAND bin backup (29gb) and a backup of boot 0/1 files. I've moved those files off my SD card and into a secure location on my laptop.

Now I just want to confirm that the next step is to setup the Emunand before I boot into CFW to activate my license?

You shouldn't update to the latest 8.0.1.. Update to 8.0.1 from 2.7.1 using ChoiNX so you can downgrade back to less than 3.0.0 for warm/cold boot. Guess it is too late for you unless you don't care about warm/cold boot.

I use Goldtree (Switch) and Goldleaf (Win pc) for that. But I’m using Atmosphere, not sure whether it works with SX too.

So I have another question and I thought rather than opening up a new thread, I'd just continue on to this one.

So thanks to everyone's help, I've been playing my Switch and I've had the best of both words. Keeping my OFW for online play with official carts and using Emunand CFW to play downloaded games offline.

Now obviously to accomplish this I've had to keep my OFW updated to the latest in order to play online (Yes I know I've burnt fuses). But now I'm treading into new territory because Nintendo have released Firmware 8.1.0 (I currently have 8.0.1 installed on both OFW and Emunand CFW).

Firstly is 8.1.0 compatible with the latest version of SX?

Second how would I go about updating my Emunand CFW? Obviously I never want to connect that side of my Switch to WiFi, so is there a safe offline way to do it? Prehaps via SD card or a USB cable and my PC?

I think I know how do update the OFW to 8.1.0 (please correct my if I'm wrong). I update it normally using a WiFi connection on my Switch, then I need to do a full NAND backup (using Hekate) because my previous one for 8.0.1 will be irrelevant. That's basically it, right?

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!

Your older backup won’t be irrelevant, it just won’t boot without custom boot loader (hekate). You can make a new backup, in the worst case you could use the old one too and update with ChoiDujourNX, what you should use for emunand as well.

Yes, use SX OS 2.8.

Second how would I go about updating my Emunand CFW? Obviously I never want to connect that side of my Switch to WiFi, so is there a safe offline way to do it? Prehaps via SD card or a USB cable and my PC?

You have to use an homebrew app on your Switch called ChoiDujourNX. But first, you have to download the 8.1.0 firmware. I can’t give you links here, but a quick Google search will help you to find it. Once you downloaded it, extract it and you should get a folder itself containing multiple files. Put the folder on your SD card, launch ChoiDujourNX on your Switch and update. Read everything, especially since AutoRCM is enabled by default (you can disable it if you don’t want it).

I think I know how do update the OFW to 8.1.0 (please correct my if I'm wrong). I update it normally using a WiFi connection on my Switch, then I need to do a full NAND backup (using Hekate) because my previous one for 8.0.1 will be irrelevant. That's basically it, right?

Yes, update as you say. Regarding the NAND backup, you don't "need to", but you can do it if you want (for precaution).

Why would you buy an original dongle?!
search for "rcm loader" on aliexpress. They cost around 10$ and work great.

Why not just a normal dongle which is not only cheaper but supports more than just SX OS? TX may also not be providing any more support as some of their key members have been arrested.
