A remake of the PlayStation Portable game Star Ocean: First Departure has been announced. Square Enix will be bringing the game, which sports a new R in its title, westward on both the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Released originally in 2007, First Departure was a remake of the first Star Ocean title, which was a Super Nintendo JRPG created by tri-Ace, the former developers of Tales of Phantasia. Star Ocean: First Departure R is a notable reveal for the west, as a remake of Star Ocean 2 released in Japan in 2015, but was never localized.

Meh, everybody that was on the scene already played it.
You know that, back in the day we all were playing DeJap versions of Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean.
And probably that is the core western fan following of Tales of anyways.
Western/Japan release... too old to even care about that.

Okay so then don't get it?

There's hope for a Xenosaga port.

Why would I or would I not be getting it?

Because it is a port of a remake of a remake? Who cares.

I was never talking about getting it or not, I was only stating that it having not been officially released outside of Japan the first time around does not change the fact that it is a port of a remake of a remake.

The goalpost remains unmoved.

This makes me so happy. Although I'm more excited for SO2 that's likely to follow.

Dunno if I'll play these on switch. Already have them on my Vita, which I kinda prefer. Might grab it on PS4, though! (Depending on price...)

A remake of a remake of another port of a remake of a remake

Or, another port of another PSP game. Seems really popular and timely these days considering how many PSP batteries are biting the dust for good I've heard about.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Got to admit, didn't see that coming!

I been saying to myself they would put the psp star ocean games on ps4, then all 5 games would be on one system. It seems simple since hackers said the ps4 has a psp emulator. Talking about the Parappa the rapper HD thing, not to mention the castlevania requiem as well. Seem like a simple thing.

All that aside, are these games even good? I never hear people talk about star ocean a lot, and the first game didn't even get released internationally until the psp remake, instead of being stuck on snes. If any game needs a international re-release, its tales of phantasia since its GBA port. :ninja:

I think the first three games may have been fine (with 3 maybe being the peak of the series? Couldn't say for sure), but I know the 4th and 5th game bombed critically.

Also, Tales of Phantasia's best played on the PS1 with that one Tales fansite translation, though I'm sure you'd be fine with Gemini's (God bless this man and his work on the Resident Evil 1.5 restoration based on that leak from Team IGAS six years ago) translation. GBA version's the worst one from what I've heard!

It really is a shame the only official international release of ToP is the GBA version. The graphics are arguably better than on SNES, but the music samples are bad and the controls absolutely kill it. The PS1 version is definitely the way to go in my experience, though I've never actually seen the PSP release in action. It's just the PS1 version in widescreen I assume?

I don't honestly know, but in the age of the Switch, I would say the PSP version, if it is a port, the only thing going for it is widescreen and the lack of a translation since I'm sure it's not like Eternal Punishment PSP where it has more sidequests and a sidestory starring the main character of Persona 2 Innocent Sin in addition to some things being more streamlined. (yeah, there's two Persona 2's, Innocent Sin is the first with Eternal Punishment being the sequel, or the Disc 2 of the game if I'm gonna be honest, as IS' ending is VERY sequelbait, not to go into specifics!)

If anything, I'd rather see the Yakuza games for PSP (both of them, work is being done on the first, but I'd love to see the second get translated after) fan translated next, though who knows, they may do an up-port of those games and finally localize the Kenzan! and Ishin! games. PS3 remasters on PC and PS4 first, though!

I'm torn on this, I mean i enjoyed it on the PSP a pretty fair amount, but as for this i'll need to see more than just a teaser picture before i can make a hard decision on if i want this or not.
