Epic Games is set to receive a BAFTA award for their contribution to game development

Epic-Games-reveal-update-plans-for-the-remainder-of-2018.jpg

During this upcoming E3, the British Academy of Film and Television will be giving a "Special Award" to a gaming company that has innovated the gaming industry, and has made a huge contribution to gaming as a whole. That company is Epic Games. BAFTA will be honoring Epic Games with a title that only eight others have held since the inception of the award in 2003, recognizing their impact to gaming as a whole, through the creation of the Unreal Engine, Fortnite, and Gears of War. Previous winners of the Special Award consist of Nolan North, for his voice acting performance in many major games, "Markus Notch" Persson for Minecraft, and Amy Hennig for her writing in the Uncharted and Legacy of Kain series. Though Epic Games has left an immeasurable mark on gaming history, this award comes at a controversial time, with the Epic Game Store still receiving negative press, and multiple reports of "endless" 70-hour work weeks due to development crunch from overtired employees.

We are delighted to present this year’s Special Award to Epic Games. Having powered the creativity and imaginations of development teams of all sizes over the years – many of whom have gone on to win BAFTAs - it’s right to mark their huge contribution with this Special Award as part of BAFTA’s commitment to celebrating and promoting the very best in games. Epic is at the forefront of the evolution of the global games industry and the impact of their innovation is undeniable.

After all the Fortnite trash and Epic Game Store scandal, I almost forgot that Epic actually has done good things in the past.
What scandal? All I saw was a bunch of valve fanboys crying that they have to use another program to play a few games. I also dont like fortnite, but we all have to consider that millions of gamers love it and the game gets a ton of support. The 70 hour work week thing is quite normal in the industry, I should know because Im also a developer. Dont like it, dont be a developer.
--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Well deserved award!

This is a joke, right? "Contribution to game development"??   The only thing they contributed besides Fortnite is developing a sub par storefront that spies on users' data XD
You realize the very widely used Unreal Engine was also made by Epic right?

EGS not complying with GDPR.
EGS and the possible spyware deal.
EGS messing with Steam data without a user’s express input.
EGS fracturing the PC gamer user base.
EGS buying up Rocket League, saying they’d remove it from Steam, and then trying to walk it back cuz people got pissed.
And so on and so forth. Even if one loves Epic, it’s incredibly clear that there is controversy at every turn when it comes to the EGS, even when not considering the exclusivity deals.

I mean...I specifically mentioned what Epic has done, in the OP. They created one of the most important engines in the industry, and without it, we wouldn’t have some of the biggest games that we do. They can be shady, sure, and Tim Sweeney doesn’t help that, but it can’t be argued that Epic has helped game development prosper in the past.

No shit, but as a company, they haven't been exactly honest with their user base, esp. with the spyware shit they put in their digital store front/launcher, so, yeah, fuck Epic games' CEO too.

I.. I mean, I'm not refuting Fortnite being their biggest success, no, not in the least. But as for me personally, I really have no interest in such genres. Sorry >.>

That's not what you said. You said "The only thing they contributed besides Fortnite is developing a sub par storefront that spies on users' data" which is far from correct.

I still despise them, *shrug* I refuse to buy any of their games on their storefront, much less install their malware launcher.

Let's not forget that Epic Games has acquired EasyAntiCheat, immediately stopped all previous plans to support Wine on Linux and later its CEO said on Twitter, and I quote, that "installing Linux is sort of the equivalent of moving to Canada when one doesn’t like US political trends."

In a nutshell, they've given a huge blow to the Linux gaming community right when they had a chance to grow just so they could thwart Valve's plans to support games using EAC via Steam Play.

Tim Sweeney is an arrogant, inept dickweed, what did you expect
