PlayStation 4 lifetime sales reach 96.8 million, closing in on the Wii's massive 101.6 million sold

When it comes to high-selling video game systems, what pops up in most people's minds are likely the PlayStation 2, the Nintendo DS, and of course, the Nintendo Wii. Now that the most recent financial results have been reported, we can see that Sony's PlayStation 4 is closing in on 100 million units sold, with the PS4 selling a grand total of 96.8 million since the system's launch in 2013. 17.8 mil PlayStation 4s were shipped throughout all of 2018, showing a slight decline in sales compared to last year as it reaches the end of its lifespan, while hype begins to build for the upcoming "PlayStation 5". As of April 2019, the PlayStation 4 is the sixth highest selling video game console of all time, sitting just below the Nintendo Wii's 101.6 million, and above its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, which reached 87.4 million. Sony's company analysts project that around 16 million more PS4s will be sold within 2019, and if that expectation is managed, then that'll put the PlayStation 4 above both the PS1 and the Wii, in terms of sales.

Do you expect the PlayStation 4 to surpass the Nintendo Wii's total sales? With such a successful console on their hands, Sony has a lot to live up to, as they plan for the future and their next home console.

A fine console with a fine library well deserves those sales.

Miles better than the hunk of trash that was the Wii with its trash library that isn't even worth £10 used now.
Someone who has never used a wii just with the galaxy games and the console hardly anyone would complain spending 40 quid

I read the headline and I just think "what the fuck, how?"
How many of those purchases are basically people replacing units that failed (that of course, Sony won't warranty)?
Sony made no attempt at all to handle backward compatibility for any of the previous systems to even warrant buying this one.
Many during its launch were buying it as an over-glorified Netflix box.
Even as bad as the shoulder buttons were on the stock PS3 controller design, to me the PS4 controller feels even worse when I did get some playtime with it.
Haven't really liked any of the PS4 exclusives; granted that part is preference, but it's almost time for the PS5 and I still can't find anything that is only on PS4 that I would actually want to play.
Sony is being infamously heavy-handed with how it treats publishers and its users, trying to bar cross play until there's people literally battering their offices down with pitchforks and torches demanding it.
Never mind the stupid mandate internally that "no pro aware games can run faster than the vanilla unit", so those games I did care about that were Pro-aware actually ran worse on the higher end model.

Everything about Sony's business decisions compared to the Xbox One and WiiU (and Switch) should have had it no higher than second place. The fact that they keep getting away with it, is insulting to me. It doesn't make sense.

Nope. Just sick and fed up, with Sony's arrogance and petty business maneuvers.

I probably would have had a more impressive library, or several high end PC's, from the money I had to waste replacing PlayStation consoles and portables. And then they chose to break what limits of patience I had by banning my account, even when I never played online, ever.

Even if they hadn't done that, as I said, there isn't enough of their own exclusives to warrant even buying a system second-hand; let alone a new one, to have to replace it five or six times until I get one that works.

I'm way past done with Sony's (lack of) hardware reliability. Even more fed up with how they go out of their way to litigate and scare off suppliers to try and repair their systems.

Did they?
While didn't keep up with discussions of boring artificially crippled PCs, I thought the PS4 was one of the few Sony products since the 90s with no flagrant reliability issues - unlike some models of: the PS1, the PS2, the PS3, Trinitrons with Shindengen PWM chips, 2007 Vaios with nvidia graphics, the (defective by design, as the campaign says) 2005 DRM music CDs, the Xperia Go waterproofing, ...

The contract terms between Sony and Foxconn (who actually did make the PS4's for them), were especially terrible, with many candidly professing to spitting in systems in the assembly line because it was that worthless to them. Nevermind it was the especially horrible conditions for the plant making these that got attempted suicide rates high enough not for Foxconn to invest in fitting counsel or mental health support for their workers, but to basically pay for glorified nets to catch would-be attempts to fling themselves off the building.

Considering the high talks of "conflict resources" going on at the time, and Sony's silence comes off not as ignorance, but complicity in creating the hell they had to endure.

Great and all, but it's also a fact that the NINTENDO SWITCH is nearing the PS4's LIFETEIME SALES in JAPAN.
All achieved in a mere 2 years lol! The linear graph prognose is probably very wrong as Nintendo is gearing up to introduce the Nintendo Switch to the white market in CHINA.

only reason the wii was so popular was for 2 reasons
1. families
2. hacked early

if it wasn't for the wiikey and usb loader i would have sold my wii a long time ago. thanks to that i never had to waste a cent on them terrible games i could just download and delete. out of the whole wiis library there is literally under 10 times worth playing on it most 1st party (sound familiar?) :P

i don't see how that comparison is valid:
ps4 had a pro version and hardcore gamers upgraded from regular to pro. so basically they bought 2 ps4's

Some people bought two wii's, how is it not valid to compare how many units were sold?

To the people in the thread:
Don't get me wrong but directly comparing thel sales between the Switch and PS4 is unfair. Don't forget that not only has the PS4 been around for much longer, it has also been sold at a loss for a long time. The Switch, on the other hand isn't. Even if the PS4 sold more, Nintendo could have earned more in the same period.

This is also worldwide. In Japan, the PS4 is selling worse on average. Combine that with the fact that it's being sold at a loss and the difference is bigger.

Plus, don't forget that the PS4 had the Pro. Tons of people who already owned a PS4 bought the Pro as an upgrade. That still counts towards an entirely new sale even though the install base itself hasn't grown.

Also, most of the profits from a console come from its games. While Sony does have a number of good selling first party titles, Nintendo still probably has the upper hand in this section. They have multipile games that sold over 10 million and they're still selling. Not only that but their games almost never drop in price so the profit per game is also more.

Console sales aren't everything. I'm probably gonna be called a Nintendo fanboy even though I own every Playstation system and play on them all the time : )

Given most people here probably don't care all that much about the profits of Japanese companies/divisions thereof do we care about potential earnings here?

Did that many people upgrade models of PS4? I only have anecdotes at this point but for the most part nobody I met seemed to care that much -- it was not like a DS to DS lite screen change or anything like that. Most of the big tech sites generally said "eh" as well.

Back to the first thing most around here probably care what devs will think when they look out at the world and potential options for their game, size up install bases, attach rates for games and go from there (ease of dev, tools available and whatever else).

I feel like people are trying to imply that sales directly correlate to success which doesn't always have to be true. Again we can't say that the PS4 is "more succesful" or doing better than the Switch (what people are saying) because higher sales don't necessarily mean that.

I feel like things like big tech sites don't represent the general public all too well. For example, everybody on the internet loves to shit on FIFA and COD yet they still remain one of the best selling video game franchises. We're not really sure about the Pro's numbers but I do think it makes at least somewhat of a difference.
