Hi. My friend has a 360 but i noticed he is using the coloured cables (component) and the image is pixelated. he told me he already tried using an HDMI but it didnt work. Does he have to buy an official HDMI Xbox360 cable? and will this improve the graphics? thanks!

HDMI cables are just cables. His cable is probs broken. He needs a new HDMI cable (not specifically an official one) if he wants 1080p (never used component).

Hdmi does provide a sharper image since it's a digital signal. The first couple years of 360s didn't have an hdmi port though.

I think they can do 1080i. 1080p renders a full frame instead of interlaced lines. HDMI is also cheaper and more supported.
The cables/video format themselves are independent of resolution, both can achieve 1080p easily

Whether the source device and display will support them, is another question (especially with Big Media lobbying against analog formats for DRM interests)

I believe the 360 can only do 1080i over Component.

Any HDMI cable, even as cheap as possible, should work. If he can't get them to work, he either needs to check the settings on the console and TV (like make sure he's not trying to output 1080p to a TV that only supports up to 720p) or possibly the console's HDMI port is damaged.
I wouldn't have thought there would be a noticeable difference in quality between component and HDMI, but a HDMI signal is digital whereas component is analogue, so could be worth trying a different component cable or a VGA cable - although component and VGA will only give you up to 1080i, only HDMI will give you 1080p.
