EA and Respawn reveal new single player Star Wars game, Jedi Fallen Order, launches later this year

EA is finally ready to give us a new Star Wars game, in the form of Jedi: Fallen Order, a third person action adventure game that will be developed by Respawn Entertainment, the team behind this year's wildly popular Apex Legends. Unlike that game, however, Fallen Order will be an entirely single player title that features absolutely no microtransactions, which was a major complaint regarding EA's last Star Wars game, Battlefront II. The story will take place shortly after Star Wars: Episode III, and stars a Padawan named Cal Kestis, a Jedi who has been branded as a traitor, and is on the run. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has a release date targeted for this holiday season, November 15th, and will be available on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One.

What's everyone complaining about? It looks fine. Respawn said no microtransactions or online. There's 7 months until release, a lot of stuff can be fixed in that time. It looks like it has an interesting story. Yes, it's published by EA but after seeing this and the details of its nature, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

People are still in disbelief that EA would stay hands-off with any of their developers.

That was the case for Titanfall 1/2 and Apex Legends, however. I think EA must have realized by now that their influence on the development environment is toxic, and it hurts sales as a result. Many of the developers they've bought out have since become too depleted already to truly benefit from that realization, but not Respawn. They can still be EA's saving grace, as long as somebody logical inside the company can keep the sharks in suits at bay.

Gave me chills, this looks amazing.

Respawn is the only developer so far that EA has learned to stay hands-off with. EA wasn't involved at all with the development of Apex Legends, either. Which is why it's actually a good game and wasn't rushed.
Didn't Respawn kept Apex Legends a secret from EA? How would EA be involved with the development or know about it if they don't even know about this game was being developed to begin with.

As for this Star Wars game. Even though the devs says the game won't have microtransactions or multiplayer, that doesn't mean they won't implement them in the future. The Division is an example where the dev promise no microtransactions initially, but they later patch them in.

Bioware seems to have sunk themselves pretty well and didn't even manage to get Anthem properly set up for MTX. People like to attribute massive meddling to EA on the basis of zero evidence. I'm sure they demand strong financial returns but its mostly up to the subsidiaries to figure out how to get there. Just that getting there usually involves shitty practices, and those that don't get shut down.

Respawn is a developer owned by EA, I seriously doubt Apex Legends' development was a secret to them.

It's not just about the returns they demand, any game that EA meddles in the development of always gets rushed to release. Not to mention that they'll force some pretty non-sensical decisions on developers, like making them use the Frostbite game engine even though they aren't familiar with it. I believe that's much of the reason Mass Effect: Andromeda turned out to be such a mess.

Read a nice article on Bioware and the development of Anthem. Being forced to use a foreign engine with little to no documentation and headache inducing code really makes life difficult. Dragon Age Inquisition was the first game they used Frostbite on IIRC

Hopefully this is the case and EA don’t start EAing them up.

it's EA so you know they are going to fuck it up just like everything else they own. no micro$ yeah right they will be added later or they will fill the game up with shitty mini dlc packs like with the sims 4.

If it's anything like Jedi Knight, it's a mix of first and third person gameplay, though mostly the former. And while this trailer clearly wasn't gameplay, it was all in-engine, so this game is gonna look slick af on high-end PCs.

a game is only good as its gameplay, i remenber order 1886 or whatever was called on ps4 looked really good and yet gameplay and levels were crap so i reserve my judgement on gameplay videos instead of cute scenes.

Titanfall 2 had a really solid single-player campaign, so I'm optimistic about this one being good. It will be interesting to see how similar some of the gameplay mechanics are to their previous titles.

They can still sell DLCs. A AAA game nowadays can no longer be financed only by the selling price.
Correct, this is what nintendo has predicted a loooong time ago, graphical fidelity comes with a cost. Development cost rise to the roof, and company take a gamble assentially. If a game is a succes no problems, but is it undersells, companys will go bankrupt. Priacy is not the biggst problem developers face, it is technoligy itself.

Still got like 8 months left until release, no? I'm sure we'll definitely see some gameplay later down the line.

Very excited to see what Respawn can do with the Star Wars IP.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
