Nintendo unveils Mario Odyssey & Breath of the Wild Labo VR compatibility

vr-kit-software-compat-trailer.jpg

With Nintendo's new Labo kit drawing closer, Nintendo has unveiled some interesting new content. Today, it was announced that Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are to receive updates making them compatible with their new VR accessory. The update to Super Mario Odyssey lets you play three new 'mini-missions' in VR, whilst the Zelda update seemingly allows you to play the whole game using the goggles. These updates will arrive on the 25th of April, two weeks after the release of the Labo VR kit.

Sounds great if it's developed for PC and Playstation VR. Sounds pretty bad on a Switch underclocking itself in portable mode.

That's not a big mystery, PSVR has sold over 4.2 million units. I suppose 'Labo' was ultimately Nintendo's only possible way to get in on the VR trend this generation, since it's obvious Switch can't power even a mid-range experience like PSVR.

Psvr was much more than what Nintendo is offering.

BotW might run OK in VR if they increase the GPU clock. Even then, it's still gonna look nearly as pixelated as Minecraft.
And by OK I mean it might be playable but people that are susceptible to it are likely going to experience some serious motion sickness.

Knowing actual games that aren’t targeted for kids are getting support for this, I might actually consider getting a Labo.
I'm not 100% on this, but you could probably fit Switch into a few of the Google Cardboard headsets. Assuming you wanted to save some money and perhaps get something a little higher-quality, anyway:

Whether they require verification that you own Labo before unlocking the VR support for these games, I'm also unsure on, however.

All these hardcore gamers are freaking out about bad framerates and poor quality. Personally, I think it'll be fun to pop in for half an hour and mess around. Would be an enjoyable gimmick

It's not so much that for me, it's that I get super motion sick with certain kinds of VR. Labo really wasn't designed with most of us in mind anyway, so I'm sure kids will have a blast with it.

Even so, is it even going to be in first-person, or are we getting the problem with just about every Virtual Boy game not named Teleroboxer and that one other game? You know, where the games, for being on a system about virtual reality, are in the third person and not first person!?

If they weren't asking $80 for it, then maybe. You'd often get "enjoyable gimmicks" out of the bargain bin Wii games too, but those were like $5 - $10.

I doubt many will drop $80. I'm gonna pay $40 for the starter package and enjoy the garage

I still expect a support for Mario Kart 8 (or maybe a Mario Kart 9 or Mario Kart VR) soon, it would be fantastic

I wonder if BOTW will receive an improvement in frame-rate for VR, with the current frame-rate should not be a very good experience.

Watch, Nintendo will come in with their little cardboard budget VR kit and provide the kind of gameplay we've all been longing for since the early 90's. Maybe not, but it would be funny if Nintendo schooled the expensive alternatives out there and showed everyone, once again, how it's done.
